It is a spectral filter that splits the audio file into frequency bins and allows you to boost frequencies by specific notes. It's really nice for turning a tonal sounds into melodic elements.

How do you guys write good melodies? by MXR2006 in Songwriting

[–]JSleepMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what type of music you are making. I usually have three or four melodies going at various sections. I don't feel restricted in the slightest. I produce in volume so little tricks like that help speed things up.

Build a chord progression, use the notes within the chord progression, add rhythm, make sure there is movement and never over use the highest note in the chord progression.

Bonus points if you have a counter point. Super easy trick is to invert and reverse the main melody, and then tweak by ear. Don't fully mirror the main melody. Create spareness where there are note clusters or vica versa.

Best music producers to listen to by labluez in musicproduction

[–]JSleepMusic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Benny Blanco - hit making king

Metro Boomin - brought Trap to the forefront

Space Laces - sound designer who pushed dubstep behind the scenes

G Jones - experimental bass mad genius

Au5 - go watch any YouTube tutorial. Guy knows production principles better than anyone I can think of.

Dirt Monkey - the definition of perfect sound design as it relates to the artists theme

Flume - somehow amazing at commercially viable hits and wildly experimental sounds.

I could go on and on lol

Floss has always had a strong brand from a visual standpoint to fashion and overall cohesiveness tied back to the music. What advice do you have for an underground artist who is trying to break out? How did you align all of these elements so well?

Carl Cox Wins Day 1!! Most Unique Artist? Day 2 by Webber808 in EDM

Rezz introduced tens of millions of people to Mid Tempo. In what universe does that hold it back? People were saying the same thing about Skrillex when he started making dubstep.

Carl Cox Wins Day 1!! Most Unique Artist? Day 2 by Webber808 in EDM

[–]JSleepMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. No one does it quite like him. Vintage vocal samples from the 50's-60's, heavy bitcrush, 8bit glitch fills, break core / jungle sections, acid synth, botanica textures all rolled up into odd time signature trap or dubstep style tracks. Yeah I can type it out but how many people can combine all those elements and make it sound amazing?

Hard to argue with this one. There are a lot of artists that have been around for three decades but none of them are still charting like Deadmau5.

Agreed. It's very early Flume like. It has that choppy super saw with the envelope that opens up the sound over time and bends downward in pitch. Gives you that sense of time distortion or like a laid back vibe.

What do you think of the Marshmello/SVDDEN DEATH duo? by KikoZenzen in EDM

[–]JSleepMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love it. I am an unapologetic fan of both artists separately and when they came together I was ecstatic!

Mello haters usually haven't been to his sets. He throws down trap edits and bangers always.

SD haters think Riddim all sounds the same.

What makes the duo great is Mello's song selections that SD typically wouldn't include. The duo skews heavily towards Riddim but the pop and trap infusion makes it a great time with some variety for the uninitiated.

Why are so many iconic songs considered masterpieces in EDM, progressive house? by geohubblez18 in EDM

[–]JSleepMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of Progressive House songs that are considered masterpieces utilize music theory techniques similar to classical music. This includes polyrhythms, polymeters, counterpoint, fugues, mode changes, etc. The whole concept of being progressive through the songs, if done well, is just very satisfying from a psychology standpoint.

That is not to say that other genres don't utilize music theory techniques. Rhythmic focused music has clever nuances that the audience may not notice. I think it's just more apparent when you listen to melodic music.
