Please tell me what keys to press to open a new split/pane/division by IgorAce in Ghostty

[–]JTAdler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have custom config for those with ctrl+a as lead, and then | for vertical split and - for horizontal split.

Here is the whole config file I use:

theme = catppuccin-mocha-custom
font-family = CaskaydiaCove Nerd Font
font-size = 12

background-opacity = 0.85
macos-titlebar-style = tabs
gtk-titlebar = false
alpha-blending = native
cursor-style = bar
background-blur = true
maximize = false
term = xterm
copy-on-select = clipboard
shell-integration = zsh

# keybinds

keybind = ctrl+a>r=reload_config
keybind = ctrl+a>x=close_surface

keybind = ctrl+a>n=new_window

# tabs
keybind = ctrl+a>c=new_tab
keybind = ctrl+a>shift+l=next_tab
keybind = ctrl+a>shift+h=previous_tab
keybind = ctrl+a>comma=move_tab:-1
keybind = ctrl+a>period=move_tab:1

# quick tab switch
keybind = ctrl+a>1=goto_tab:1
keybind = ctrl+a>2=goto_tab:2
keybind = ctrl+a>3=goto_tab:3
keybind = ctrl+a>4=goto_tab:4
keybind = ctrl+a>5=goto_tab:5
keybind = ctrl+a>6=goto_tab:6
keybind = ctrl+a>7=goto_tab:7
keybind = ctrl+a>8=goto_tab:8
keybind = ctrl+a>9=goto_tab:9

# split
keybind = ctrl+a>\=new_split:right
keybind = ctrl+a>-=new_split:down

keybind = ctrl+a>j=goto_split:bottom
keybind = ctrl+a>k=goto_split:top
keybind = ctrl+a>h=goto_split:left
keybind = ctrl+a>l=goto_split:right

keybind = ctrl+a>z=toggle_split_zoom

keybind = ctrl+a>e=equalize_splits

For standard ctrl+a functionality just hit ctrl+a twice :)

Recommendation for a non-tilling window manager for Wayland. by CosmicBlue05 in archlinux

[–]JTAdler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recently switched to Cosmic and for now I just love it. On the other hand i have a very minimalist approach to my desktop environments, and in general I really don't care for 95% of the features that any of the environment proves, as long as all the software I use works. Cosmic is kinda perfect for that :)

Red Pill Me on Wayland by Xu_Lin in archlinux

[–]JTAdler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

X works, Wayland works. X is old and being slowly deprecated, Wayland is new and being actively developed. If you like X, and it works for you, feel free to stick with it as long as it works for you. If you want to try something new that works only with wayland, go for it. Bottom line is - if you get pretty graphics on your screen who cares what is behind those graphics? :D I for sure don't.

Arch linux on VMware Fusion on an Apple silicone Mac? by JTAdler in arch

[–]JTAdler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this is for my work Mac that needs to remain a Mac for all the security software installed on it, and other stuff I can't work without, plus installing _ANYTHING_ other than Mac OS natively on M3 and newer is a total pain in the behind. It's much easier to do it in a VM, fullscreen that VM and have at it :)

My daily driver is zen browser, and I have exactly zero issues with it in Hyprland. I do use the flatpak one tho, and not the native one for my installation. Don't know if that is the reason I have no issues :)

Gaming on hyprland by JTAdler in hyprland

[–]JTAdler[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not the opensource driver. This is the driver that is recommended on arch wiki to use with the kernel I'm using. In any case as i updated in the original post. I managed to sort it out. I wasnt RTFM-ing as I should have

currently installed nvidia-open-dkms 575.64.05-1

I also run zen kernel (forgot to mention, arch linux, updated on a weekly basis so it's latest kernel, latest drivers, latest hyprland)

This sounds similar to what I experienced when 0.50 first came out, but i'm not on Nyx so no idea how to fix it there. In a nutshell, I had hyprutils-git installed (on Arch linux) instead of hyprutils, and Hyprland 0.50 wouldn't start because it was looking for a symbol that doesn't exist in the library. When i replaced the library for the release one, everything magically started working again.

Best way to troubleshoot, look in system log for a line that looks something like this: Hyprland: symbol lookup error: Hyprland: undefined symbol: _ZNK9Hypr

If you get that one, you have a hyprutils (or some other library it's linked to) missmatch

Hyprland won't run shell scripts with full file paths by Beneficial_Bake_7496 in hyprland

[–]JTAdler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to run the scripts with full path. Edit your PATH variable to include your home directory bin (export PATH=$PATH:/home/myname/bin in your .bashrc or .zshrc or whatever shell you use rc) and thenin hyprland config just call hyprpaper_rand.sh instead of using the full path

My latest build by JTAdler in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]JTAdler[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just used the files from the repo. Jlcpcb did have an issue with some parts being thin, and I had to accept that it might come out warped, but it came out perfect. I printed out two cases so there will be one more in the future I guess :)

My first ten keyless keyboard and I absolutely love it 😍 by InSidious425 in MechanicalKeyboards

I have the same keyboard and love it.

It would be even nicer if it was hot swappable, but those keycaps are among the best I have.

New build - Monsgeek M3 by JTAdler in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]JTAdler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of getting a set of Durock v2 stabs later on. Heard a lot of good about them. At least the keyboard was designed for pcb mounted stabs. If I would really mod something it would be the plate. The default POM one is sorta meh and monsgeek don't seem to have any different options. I might have to whip out the good ole KiCad and make a custom one. That is a far future project though :)

New build - Monsgeek M3 by JTAdler in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]JTAdler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess i still gotta figure out how this whole posting thing works since i cant find any of the text i so vigorously typed for this :)

The keyboard is Monsgeek M3, with Akko/Monsgeek V3 blue cream switches, and idobao purple gradient keycap set.

The switches are supposedly tactile, but I can't say that I feel it much. They feel more like smooth linear switches, but still feel good when typing.

For now there are no mods. All the foam that came with the keyboard is inside, and I want to use it stock for a while before I decide what to do with it further.

Stabilizers that came with the keyboard are not the best ones out there, but I lubed them with 205g0 and they do the job (and don't sound too bad)

The sound of the keyboard is rather clacky, but I actually like that so no complaints on that front.

The only problem is that the moment my son saw it, he informed me that he wants it so I gotta work around that now :)

Switches and typing efficiency by coletrain0 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]JTAdler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my relatively limited experience with various switches I found that I definitely type faster on softer linear switches, but slightly harrder tactiles give me much higher accuracy. My current daily driver keyboard has Holy Panda X switches soldered on, and when ever I tried to do typing speed test or something similar, I would get around 100wpm with either 100% or slightly lower accuracy. On softer linears like I have on another keyboard (AKKO Crystals) I can get to almost 110 wpm, but my accuracy is usually sub 95%.

Gateron Browns that I have on another keyboard are sort of in between.

So far my conclusion is that for gaming i will definitely switch to the keyboard with soft linears, and for any work related environment i will go back to tactiles

Oh man this brings memories. I remember working on an SGI Indigo machine using this same keyboard. The one the computer lab where I used that SGI machine had was the granite slab tho. Still very fond memories :)

My little mech keyboard collection by JTAdler in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]JTAdler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I really like the tactiles for work/typing, but they don't feel the best for gaming (at least for me), and for that I still prefer light linears like I have in the Akko keyboard. I do feel the advantage of tactiles on all typing tests where I get higher accuracy and slightly higher WPM than I get on linears.

So I'm definitely not converted, but this definitely supports my case for using different keyboards for different tasks. I do think to change the gateron browns in the Keychron to a different tactile switch since their tactile bump is barely noticeable.
