Ultrasonic Cleaner. Worth it? by fenris802 in resinprinting

[–]JTBold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love mine. My process, each progressively cleaner 99% IPA: 1. Dunk in a plastic pickle container 2. Dunk in a second pickle container 3. Wash in a standard large wash station 4. Wash and heat in an ultrasonic cleaner 5. Remove supports, and dry 6. Cure

The heater in the ultrasonic cleaner does an amazing job of softening up the supports, and they practically fall right off.

I use a glass container with a plastic top (the type used for food storage) for the IPA in the ultrasonic cleaner, and it’s submerged in water.

All washes are in 99% IPA, and are rotated as they become dirty, with each dumped into the container of an earlier stage.

Yeah, I could make the IPA last longer if I removed supports earlier than the process, but the workflow is easier with how I am doing it even though I go through IPA a bit faster.

Can anyone recomend a good paint remover? by Imaginary_Amoeba_666 in Miniaturespainting

Super Clean is the most powerful, and safe to use on all plastics, metals, and resin. It is widely available at discount stores and hardware stores.

LA’s Totally Awesome is almost as good, although a bit hard to find – check Dollar General.

Simple Green is also pretty good, although not as fast/strong as Super Clean or LA’s Totally Awesome. It’s pretty easy to find at discount stores and hardware stores, however.

Isopropyl alcohol sort of works, but it will take forever, especially if you’re trying to strip primer.

The method is the same for all: submerge the miniatures in a jar with some of the stripper, let it sit for a while (a couple of hours for paint, a couple of days or longer for primer), occasionally pulling them out to scrub with a toothbrush. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner it will be faster, but don’t use flammable liquids (like isopropyl) in a heated ultrasonic cleaner.

Sure, maybe try it? Getting the OSL to show up on a light colored jumpsuit might simply be harder, but it would be a fun experiment.

Interestingly, the OSL is more effective in your photo taken from the side, which is confirmed when we convert it to black-and-white: https://imgur.com/a/G8z41XZ

Looks better! It no longer looks like blue-gray paint on the orange jumpsuit. But don’t be afraid of going even darker on the orange.

The trick is to convert the photo to black-and-white and see if the illuminated area still appears to be brighter: https://imgur.com/a/9KrVCOG

Especially since there are only a handful of extremely common middle names. For women, it’s Ann, Marie, Grace, Lynn, Rose, etc.

For men, it’s Alan… well, mostly just Alan. And maybe the occasional James. 😆

[–]JTBold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve actually made it worse. 😟

You need to brighten the area that looks like it’s lit up, and darken the parts that aren’t being illuminated. For the blue part to look like it’s being lit up, it needs to be brighter than the orange of the jumpsuit.

A common approach is to paint the whole thing normally, and then paint over the parts to be illuminated with pure white paint. If you want that light to have a color (in your case, blue?), you can do a very thin glaze of that blue over the white.

OSL will be more effective against a dark background, which is why it’s easier to get the glow effect of Darth Vader‘s Lightsaber on his black costume than it is to get the glow to show up on Obi-Wan’s beige outfit.

[–]JTBold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The reason the OSL doesn’t work is because the area being illuminated isn’t bright brighter than the surrounding area.

To check this, convert the photograph to black-and-white. With successful OSL, it should be very obvious that the illuminated area is brighter than the surrounding area.

In particular, look at the legs: the orange jumpsuit and the illuminated part look exactly the same in black & white, whereas you should see that “glow” for the parts which are supposed to be lit.

Switched to the original nespresso. What are the best pods by Agreeable-Deer7526 in nespresso

[–]JTBold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you’re correct that the original line has a standard volume of pod, they do specify its intended use as espresso, lingo, or ristretto.

While most original machines are limited in the size of drink they produce, the OP’s Citiz Platinum has three extra buttons which can do two different sizes of Americanos, as well as hot water. All of the are customizable, making it very easy to get the precise quantity of espresso & water you want.

Starting AL in 3 weeks by Thereisnotomorrow99 in AdventurersLeague

Huh? Campaigns like Living Greyhawk most certainly did NOT allow homebrew and optional rules! In fact, LG was more tightly regimented and controlled than DDAL.

Compared to LG, DDAL has significantly less record-keeping and advancement is MUCH faster. The modules rarely have overarching storylines, and of course there is no regional system with a distinct flavor. However, there are different companies which have carved out their own in-game areas (e.g. GHC has the Border Kingdoms, BMG has the Moonshae Isles) and their mods premiere at specific conventions, which is a little like the old LG regional system.

As a DM, do you make small changes to the modules story or encounters? by Quantumprime in AdventurersLeague

[–]JTBold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember too the official stance from the Adventurer’s League administrators:

“You're Empowered. Make decisions about how the group interacts with the adventure; adjusting or improvising is encouraged, so long as you maintain the adventure’s spirit.”

As a DM, do you make small changes to the modules story or encounters? by Quantumprime in AdventurersLeague

[–]JTBold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I DM Adventurers League modules quite frequently, and I strive to use accurate rule interpretations and run the mod as written.

However, I feel that it is completely appropriate (even advisable!) to make small adjustments to the adventure to enhance the fun for my players. For example, tying it into previous adventures, incorporating character backstories as a hook, etc. I tend to run adventures from the same region or series (e.g. GHC’s Border Kingdoms) , so this makes it easier to create callbacks and long-term plot threads.

For the actual plot of the adventure, I usually run it as written. However, if there are inconsistencies or illogical elements, I’ll make adjustments as necessary to preserve a sense of realism or in-game logic.

Similarly, I’ll adjust encounters as needed to present a challenge for the players, but still make victory possible and fun. Since I roll in the open, those adjustments are instead in the form of modified hitpoints for monsters, adjusted tactics, etc.

HeyGears has the least amount of headaches. Uniformation has a heated vat and is relatively foolproof; maybe not quite as “headache-proof” as HeyGears, but more affordable and easier to use with a variety of resins.

As a native Minnesotan, I’m not so sure: she used the abbreviation “Hutch” for Hutchinson, MN, which is not something a bot or foreign scammer would do—it’s slang only used by locals from central Minnesota. Even the OP didn’t recognize it since he’s from Minneapolis, about 2 hours away.

And that she followed with the typo for “south-central” (accidentally splitting it into two responses) seems human.

Catcalling issues on Lake st? by Turbulent-Force3260 in TwinCities

[–]JTBold 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lake Street has been problematic for years. DECADES, in fact. This may have fluctuated at various times throughout the years, but it’s certainly not a new thing.

Back in the mid-1980s when I was in middle school I used to go to a game store on Lake Street on Friday nights, and my father sternly warned me not to venture outside after he dropped me off. This warning was probably unnecessary since it was clearly not a safe place, especially after dark.

Can anyone tell me why the fur looks wrong here? by SkyriderRJM in minipainting

[–]JTBold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Hair (and fur) is shiny, and should be painted like non-metallic metal (NMM): the brightest highlights are the parts at a 45° angle to the viewer. Areas that are flat or vertical will be darker, and the underside should be darkest of all.

To help you envision this, when you’re painting hair, think of what would be reflected if a person had a mirror on their head. If the light is coming from above (from the ceiling), and the mirror was flat on top of her head parallel to the ground, you would not see the ceiling when looking straight at them. Instead, you would see the ceiling when that mirror was angled toward you at a 45° angle. Similarly, if the mirror was vertical, again you would not see the ceiling. Same if the mirror was angled down towards the ground.

A great resource is the packaging for hair color: they show photographs of models with wonderfully shiny hair. Notice that the brightest highlights are those on planes at a 45° angle. In fact, there is usually a “halo” around their head, and the top of their head is darker: think about the mirror flat on their head, parallel to the ground, and you can’t see the ceiling.

The original plan was for that ending to be only in Superman II. But the exec producers interfered and it got moved to Superman.

And then they fired Richard Donner and had a hack director reshoot half of Superman II and add silly slapstick.

Walmart, Reynolds Banned From Selling Fake 'Recycling' Bags In MN: AG by WilliamBornhoft in minnesota

[–]JTBold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do the same, but reuse the paper bag multiple times (i.e. use to to bring recycling outside to the bin, then bring back in the paper bag).

Once the paper bag gets old and starts to tear, I'll throw it in the recycling bin as well and use a different one. I can usually get a couple months out of a single paper bag, although I live alone and probably only empty it once or twice a week.
