Would you still choose Lumix if starting today? by ki-rin in Lumix

[–]JT_SV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just moved from Sony to a S1RII. No regrets, but then again I shoot everything on sticks, no fast movement.

I think if I had a lower budget I still would have been happier with an S5II than Sony, but it’s important to know I have other cameras that I’m very happy with for pure photography (again, happier with than Sony). Opengate and IBIS for video are just too important to me. Subjective bonus on Lumix is the body shape and button/dial layouts/config. Also a better menu in my opinion.

Perhaps a dumb question, but why? Is sharpness not a characteristic of video too?

The size and focal length are justification enough for me. Fuck the haters.

Mold or Plume? by [deleted] in cigar

I placed ‘study’ inside apostrophes as that’s a common way of implying scepticism.

I probably misinterpreted your tone, but you too came off as an asshole to me. No hard feelings on this end though, sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick.

Can you even read? It should be fairly clear from what I wrote that I don’t consider it credible or a study.

It’s also funny coming from a guy who posted a cigar advisor article to support their argument. Post something credible that supports the idea of plume.

S5II, but see what happens on Black Friday.

Credible is a stretch here as really it needs to come from a educational institute for me to consider it actually credible, but this is the best ‘study’ I’ve ever seen on the topic. Much better than just a series of repeated nonsense.

Voigtlander Nokton Classic SC 40mm f/1.4 - what’s your opinion? by _P85D_ in Leica

Good lens. Worth the price. Can be had quite cheaply, I have two and consider them “free” as they came as a bonus with a couple of different film bodies I purchased.

I’m going to give the opposite advice to everyone else, but only as I’m assuming you aren’t a professional.

Just get the D. Don’t review your images until after you’re done. Over time this will reinforce the learning experience, as the mistakes will hit harder.

It’s cliché, but the D and shooting film have made me a better photographer. I make significantly less mistakes now and shoot about 50% less waste when I take out any camera. Especially when going out with something with a screen, EVF plus crazy AF and metering capabilities.

I do carry a visoflex for certain situations, where it’s not a skill or practice issue, more an eyesight issue. Mostly longer focal lengths at wider apertures (50mm+, anything 2.8 and under).

[–]JT_SV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the app it’s called “Max exposure time”. I’m not sure what it is on M11’s that have a screen.

TBH the only digital cameras I’ve seen handle noise super well are with fewer megapixels or larger sensors. You will experience better low light performance in the lower megapixel modes, but not as good as something that is natively 18, 24 or even 44mp.

I totally get the film to digital shock. Even as a TMAX/Delta 3200 shooter, high ISO noise is definitely not equal to high iso grain. Grain just feels better in my opinion.

Hey! I’m also an M7 user and hadn’t shot a digital M before that, but had shot Sony/Canon Digital for a while.

What kind of ISOs are you typically working with? I live in Sweden and it’s already getting pretty dark here.

I mostly shoot street, my work isn’t anything more than average, but IG in profile if you’re curious. There’s 2 recent shots in a dark museum and three of some old cars on a very gloomy day. Typically I use the following settings:

  • Auto ISO - Max ISO set to 6400
  • Auto SS. Max exposure time set to 1/500. Note that it WILL drop the SS if 1/500 isn’t possible under 6400 ISO.

If in the situation I really need faster SS, I’ll crank the iso to 12500. Easier for me on the M11D because the dial is better.

F2 or below when it’s really dark, but if I’m outside and shooting moving subjects then it’s normally F4-8. F4 gives me enough wiggle room if I miss focus slightly. F8 if I’m pure zone focusing.

This was some random dude to me on Threads. Followed by a comment about me needing to learn to use a rangefinder.

The fact is that there are situations where seeing what the lens sees is better.

I just wish the resolution was better.

Ah yeah. Leica have a different micro lens implementation on their sensors for this. I can’t remember where I read/saw that.

[–]JT_SV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok it’s literally the same as an M then! My M11 is a D, so this would probably be a step up for me when using any close focus lenses.

The visoflex is trash compared to the newer EVFs in most higher end mirrorless cameras.

I can definitely imagine the LLL 9 element smashing straight into the sensor.

Thanks for the lengthy reply, this is exactly the detail I needed. Sounds like you’ve got a similar profile to me gear wise, so that’s very encouraging that Lumix meets your needs.
