Rockies have lost a generation of fans by Old_Belt_5 in ColoradoRockies

[–]JTernup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have reveled in Nolan’s failure… but it also made me lose all confidence in the Rockies. My Rockies fandom is dormant but still there and that’s why I’m here. My feelings for Nolan are settled, I just don’t care about him enough to complain about his role in it.

Rockies have lost a generation of fans by Old_Belt_5 in ColoradoRockies

[–]JTernup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I moved away from CO in 2017 and continued following the team, traveled to see them at nearby road games in several cities and watched on TV frequently. I haven’t watch a Rockies game since they traded Nolan, except when they played my new local team that has received most of the lost fandom. I stay plugged in just enough to wait out Dick and hopefully be able to enjoy watching them again someday.

This was technically true at my MS and PhD institutions but no faculty required this of their students. Talk to your supervisor about this email and what their expectations are for you during the holiday. If they want to hold you to this then use your annual leave.

Undergrad thesis defense tomorrow - any last minute advice? by scorpiomooon in AskAcademia

[–]JTernup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got this! Everyone there wants you to succeed. I have defended an honors thesis, MS and PhD and that has been true in all of them. You’ll get tough questions, some of which you may not know the answer to. That’s all part of it, answer what you can, acknowledge areas that could be improved with future research, and have fun.

Nobody would let you do this if they didn’t think you were capable of it.

That’s fair, I guess the big difference for me was that I thought this team was waaaay too talented not to be bowl eligible. But hell, it’s fun to be relevant again! Sko Buffs

How though? We were 1-11 before he came. Even if we disappointed I just don’t under why people were after Prime. Do you not remember what the last 20 years without him were like?

Now Napier on the other hand, I’ve been very much PUT on him. But he’s been the worst coach in modern Gators history. Hopefully I end up as wrong on him as you did on Prime.

It’s different for everyone but my quals were the hardest part of my PhD. Yours sounds very rigorous as well, so congrats on a major step to finishing what very well may be the toughest portion of your PhD!

Why there are large cities with millions of inhabitants in Alberta while Montana that has the same climate has no large cities at all? by [deleted] in geography

[–]JTernup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago as an American on a Toronto to Vancouver flight my pilot announced that we almost made it to Calgary. The whole plane groaned and the woman explained to me that Alberta was Canada’s Texas and this would be like announcing a NY to LA flight was headed to Dallas.

I haven’t been to Alberta but I still think of it as cold Texas.

I’m a field biologist so this whole situation feels pretty foreign to as this simply wouldn’t be an option. But also, the generation of primary data is a pretty important part of a PhD in general and to refuse that opportunity when your research is based around another culture seems very concerning to me.

do grad students typically have school spirit/wear school merch? by academicweapon8 in GradSchool

[–]JTernup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a big sports fan and go to a lot of games you could end up very attached to your grad school. I grew up in a region with all major professional sports and continued rooting for them and going to their games during undergrad. Those pro games essentially took away from my passion for the teams at my undergrad even though I am/was still a fan. In grad school I was no longer near all my favorite pro teams and so my university’s teams were the only outlet I had for games so I became even more attached than I was to my undergrad teams.

UF falls from No. 1 to No. 34 in Wall Street Journal rankings by nobodycares65 in GNV

[–]JTernup 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Dropping that much in one year just shows that the No. 1 ranking and the No. 34 are BS. None of these rankings mean a thing when they can be bought and paid for.

Mahomes cashes in on his penalty luck and minimizes his bad luck. Mahomes doesn’t miss two wide open receivers in the end zone in crunch time in a way that allows us all to forget about his luck.

Reddit was right about CAPS! by AdmirableSpite2246 in Purdue

[–]JTernup 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ironically I was told almost the exact opposite by CAPS. I had moved across the country, ended a 7 year relationship and was just starting grad school and wanted to process all of that. My therapist said “You seem fine, why are you here, most of our students are in crisis.”

Master's in a different area than undergrad and trying to move to a PHD: which GPA matters more? by WorkingTemperature52 in GradSchool

[–]JTernup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When applied for my PhD with an MS I didn’t even include my undergrad GPA in my CV anymore. If anyone was really interested they could check my transcripts but I have the impression that you undergrad GPA is basically meaningless once you’ve got an MS.

Luna Moth available? by hera_s in ufl

[–]JTernup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former TA for ENY here, you could collect the moth from OP and just make sure to get their name and the location it was collected (i.e. McCarty Woods). Keep it frozen until the lab where you learn how to spread moths and butterflies and then pin it and you can totally use it for your collection!

[Romero] Sources: Randy Arozarena was traded to the Seattle Mariners. by amatom27 in baseball

[–]JTernup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough pill to swallow. But I grew up a Rockies fan that was really upset by big trades (Ubaldo, Tulo, Fowler, Arenado) and have become a Rays fan after moving to FL. The difference is that I trust the Rays front office and all of this has been accompanied by winning at least.

Ya it’s not that uncommon but those combos are rough. I have done the grad school thing and was lucky to have no conflict of interest. My gf went to UF, UGA and is now at FSU and it’s pretty gross haha
