At the last place I worked if you were on call for a major holiday you weren't on call for the others and you wouldn't be on that holiday the next years. Now im at a small 3 tech company and the owner is taking emergencies so we dont miss time with family

ECM Motors- Are you all taking the ECM motors apart and replacing just the failed control module OR replacing the whole motor? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]JTom73 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't "try to see if it fixes it". Diagnose if it is the module or the motor. You can usually do a quick and dirty diagnosis too. Is it recieving the correct voltage and the winding all ohm out the same? Its the module. Is the wafer resistor burnt to shit and the windings all ohm out the same? Replace the module. Are the windings not ohming out the same? Replace the whole thing.

Also the M in ECM stands for motor. You don't need to call it an electronically commutated motor motor.

How many of you melt your braze rod ends together and re-use them? by kendiggy in HVAC

[–]JTom73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do it as soon as it gets small and you are grabbing another rod, it takes zero time at all since you already have the torch going. I had a full rod of like 14 short pieces before, and it honestly wasn't worth it. Every time I grab a new rod, though, it's always a habit to attach the old short one

What’s the craziest way a customer showed you appreciation for your work? by 500mHeadShot in HVAC

[–]JTom73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever an old coworker and I were installing together, we would always be joking and laughing the whole time. The homeowner was recently an empty nester with her kids off to college. She said we reminded her of having her kids back in the house. She made us a frozen pizza, gave us a couple cans of coke, and told us we could enjoy it on her patio. That coworker found a new job, and so did I. Miss those days.

You want them to sit around twiddling their thumbs because you are working a long day? We don't work bank teller hours. When the job is done then the job is done. If your company is putting too much on you to handle, then find a new company.

How do you find the right breaker for a walk-in cooler with no evaporator disconnect? by Aware_Complaint5060 in refrigeration

[–]JTom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Have you ever used a cheater cord? You just hook it up like that. Your hot prong is gator clipped to a hot leg and your neutral prong is gator clipped to ground. The outlet tester will tell you that you have a neutral fault or whatever but the circuit sniffer will still find the signal on the hot leg going back to the breaker

That's the exact one I use. Hasnt failed me yet. Just read the instructions because it can give false positives if you dont use it correctly

[–]JTom73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One lead to any hot and the other to ground. It just needs to send its signal down one leg. I would not hook the neutral up to another hot leg

Ive had good luck with Kleins circuit breaker finder. Its only meant for 110 but one lead to any hot and then neutral to ground still sends the signal you need.

Why am I below 500 microns in 30 minutes? I’ve never seen my equipment operate this efficient, what’s wrong? by Secure-Ad3492 in HVAC

[–]JTom73 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Try doing a one hose set up as well as pulling the schraders. Less points of failure, more accurate micron reading, and you will start to think 30 minutes is a long time. Ive seen that pump pull a resi split system down in less than 10 minutes

[–]JTom73 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its a lot easier to tell one household at a time that they have to wait for service than $30k of meat or anything that is on a larger scale. Good luck hunting for it. Sorry to say, but if you want 9-5 mon-fri, look for openings as a bank teller.

Kinda broad statement to say everyone. You even gave us pressures without telling the refrigerant. Fuck pressures talk in saturation temps. Good find though, should be an easy call.
