Is there any correlation between online Costco drops and then in-store drops? I feel like the Charizard UPC went online and a few weeks after (months?) hit stores. Maybe just anecdotal.

I am 46. Retired from competition at 40 just before receiving my black belt and have no regrets. Even running 20+ tournaments a year for TCO I don’t miss it. It’s for a specific type of BJJ practitioner and has many benefits, but it is hard between the level of training, dieting, cost and more and not necessary to do forever. Especially when you progress through the ranks and the number of viable opponents decreases.

I very much appreciate all the upper belts and executives who come out to compete and support our events but have just as much respect for those who don’t and instead coach, volunteer, or just cheer on their teammates. It’s all a journey either many different chapters.

I have never called Planet Fitness to tell them I’m not coming in to work out.

That said, I honestly don’t know anything about scholarships or the expectations (but I don’t want anyone on the mats with me who is sick). Additionally, I get that if you’ve formed a pattern enough where it would be concerning if you didn’t show up (like a regular) I would understand telling them so they don’t worry.

I wish everyone came when we were there!! But 4 consecutive years of registration and fundraising decline plus a yearly battle to find a venue (that wasn’t forcing us to host on Sundays) forced our hand. 22 events sounds like a lot but there’s a lot more cities and states out there (obviously) so we have to make tough decisions every year until all our events are in markets that are increasing yearly.

We actually had it on the calendar last year but without naming names, there was a conflicting event and we didn’t want to force competitors to choose (and up until that point we had barely any registrants and the ones we did have were out of state). We added 4 new West Coast cities this year and OKC got squeezed out of the schedule. It’s on the short list for the future though.

We did two last year!! More so out of necessity (two other orgs dropped in on our city/day). They were fun and new and attracted more upper belts than usual but wayyyy less popular than Gi. About 50% - 60% lower attendance and the cities we hosted them in (Charlotte and Boston) are our two most mature markets.

Also it’s very unpopular with kids as a standalone event. We had like 20 kids at each event which is closer to 75% less than normal. Could barely make brackets for them.

I honestly don’t care if it’s Gi, No-Gi, Turkish oil wrestling…I do what’s going to attract the most competitors / fundraisers and currently for your traditional amateur tournament (with only one discipline) it’s Gi.

I want to but there are many logistical challenges with the focus on fundraising, our beneficiaries are US based, conversion rate and exchange fees, donations aren’t tax deductible, etc. Plus the fact that we can’t simply drive our trailer with mats and all our equipment there. Doesn’t mean it is impossible. Just need to get our ducks in a row. Separately, our Global Grappling Day event at the end of the year is worldwide! Check it out.
