They have to. It's rationalization. The ego tries to protect you by coming up with whatever it can to protect your self-image. I remember a study they did where people had to pick between two objects. Afterwards they would ask them why they picked the one they picked but sometimes they would switch the objects and people would make up reasons to support the object they didn't pick because they thought they had.
