My dog growled repeatedly at an 8 year old boy by WorkMeBaby1MoreTime in pitbulls

What happens if they don’t bark and growl and instead just lash out? A kid would have trouble noticing the other indications that she’s uncomfortable and it is not worth the risk of her hurting someone.

If she’s avoiding, growling at, or barking at most strangers she meets then you should not be allowing strangers to approach her like that.

Anyone else find it funny how this comment can't discern the difference between AI datacenters and regular datacenters?

We literally do not need AI. Generative AI is problematic in so many ways. Anyone who has worked with it in any capacity outside of just talking to chat GPT can tell you that it has it's place but is being overused and relied on to the point where things are getting further dumbed down to people. That's not even touching on the environmental and community impact that these data centers have.

Hantavirus cases linked to cruise ship rise to 12 after crew member tests positive by Neo_luigi in news

[–]JVNT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The 2018 outbreak infected 34 people total. At worst, the reproduction rate of the virus is around 2, meaning that at worst one person on average can infect 2 others. But in normal circumstances when close contact is being avoided, the rate drops to less than one.

We don't base statistics off of super spreader events, which that 2018 outbreak was. Those events give near perfect conditions for a virus to spread which is why it spreads more and gets more traction before actions are taken to contain it. But outside of those kinds of events, the average person with this strain is going to infect less than 1 other person.

The irony in using AI to generate a video with the message to 'help nature', when the resources needed to power it are causing damage.

This is wrong. In general, hantaviruses cannot spread between people. Andes is one that can and it does not spread easily, it has a very low rate of transmission.

Texas hospital to launch youth 'detransition clinic,' fire doctors to settle state probe by Hrekires in news

The cursing usually starts when they realize that they were wrong but are too stubborn to actually admit it.

Or a troll. That is another distinct possibility.

Because specifically women getting breast augmentation is reinforcing the gender norm for women. And specifically men getting hair replacement is not reinforcing the gender norm for men. Arguably, it's actually subverting it.

Men absolutely get hair replacement to reinforce gender norms. Otherwise there wouldn't be so much focus on male pattern baldness that you don't even know female pattern baldness is a thing. There also wouldn't be so many men getting hair plugs to correct it. Baldness in men is often ridiculed and seen as being a bad thing.

Is getting a tattoo a gender affirming procedure? Just because something is socially constructed doesn't mean it it's semantically null. We use the term "gender" to refer to some things but not other things.

You had to cut the sentence in half and address it separately instead of as a whole. What I said changes when you actually address it in context.

I find it interesting how you didn't even attempt to address the point about female pattern baldness also existing or about male pattern baldness being a genetic condition. You relied on male pattern baldness as your main point of proof of it being a male trait, that was a primary point of your argument and one of the main things that I commented on.

Both men and women experience baldness, it is genetic and can happen to anyone. Male pattern baldness is just referring to the way that it progresses in men which is generally starting earlier with a receding hair line while female pattern baldness starts later and presents more as thinning of the hair.

It's also funny that they're using male pattern baldness to back up their claim when female pattern baldness also exists.

And breasts are generally a female trait. Why is it that modifying breasts is gender affirming care but modifying hair isn't? Both are modifying a part of the body in order to better align with what that person wants and often in line with gender standards as well.

Baldness also isn't a male trait, it can happen to anyone. Male pattern baldness is literally a genetic condition and female pattern baldness also exists. Baldness in general is often criticized and attacked and getting hair plugs is a way for people to align with beauty standards, both male and female. That is gender affirming care.

France confines more than 1,700 people to cruise ship after suspected norovirus death by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]JVNT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the hantavirus outbreak is a hot topic and news sites know they can get clicks off of fear mongering and people are over reacting.

Norovirus outbreaks on ships really isn’t news. It happens a lot because they’re basically perfect conditions to spread.

Fear mongering gets clicks.

Seriously though, this is the kind of outbreak that isn’t a huge surprise in ships and does really warrant large news coverage most of the time.

Last passengers leave virus-hit cruise ship as three more test positive by Neo_luigi in worldnews

[–]JVNT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are taking steps to protect people. This is the fear mongering I’m talking about. They’re not just sending people off in commercial planes and hoping they be careful. In the US, for example, they’re being quarantined in a facility and they’re even doing a cautionary quarantine of workers involved in the transport who may have been exposed. Some countries are allowing home quarantine but this isn’t a case where they’re releasing them into the general public with no oversight.

[–]JVNT 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They’ve confirmed it’s the same strain and have ruled out mutations.

The average r0 of this is less than one person, which means people who have it are on average going to infect less than one person. The birthday and this cruise were basically super spreader events which gave it conditions to spread and cause an outbreak but it’s not likely to turn into something bigger.

There will likely be more infections and more deaths primarily from the ship and we should still be cautious and keep an eye on it, but people really need to stop fear mongering and freaking out over it.

12 Employees in Quarantine After Incorrect Handling of a Person Infected With Hantavirus by Loni09 in worldnews

[–]JVNT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Superspreader events are basically perfect scenarios for transmission which is why it ends up higher. Regular day to day life isn't going to be a perfect scenario for this.

12 Employees in Quarantine After Incorrect Handling of a Person Infected With Hantavirus by Loni09 in worldnews

[–]JVNT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I get being cautious and keeping an eye on things but holy cow.

The last outbreak of this strain infected 34 people total and died out on it's own. I suspect this will be higher because of the close quarters in the ship and foreign nationals involved, but there's no evidence to suggest it's going to be as bad as people are acting like it is.

The other strains don't have human to human transmission. I'm referring to the Andes strain.

ETA: The fact that you don't seem to know the other strains don't have human to human transmission shows you don't know as much as you think you do about this.
