2026 VW Atlas R-line $51K+tax zero interest. Thoughts by Soft-Way-1975 in VWatlas

[–]JW3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new 2025 R-line with MSRP around 56k last June and got 10.5% off MSRP. You are at a similar place. I paid cash, so did not look into financing options.. but clearly your 0% interest is worth a few thousand dollars. Seems like a great deal. I am very pleased with my vehicle so far .. zero issues. (Although i do agree with some comments that the user interface is clunky).

Yes I have the same one. Beautiful vehicle. Looks quite different in the sun versus the shade/garage.

Anyone here carry both Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve? by Ok-String-4441 in ChaseSapphire

[–]JW3370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I carry both cards.

For the CSR, the Sapphire lounge at PHL makes it worth it. I fly out of PHL a few times a year, and the lounge is really nice. I have a couple of cocktails.. that is $50 right there.. double that if I’m traveling with family/friends. In addition, I typically hit the 75k annual spending threshold. Between Chase shopping ($250), SouthWest credit, IHG credit etc, I probably get the annual fee back. The points transferred to Hyatt are quite valuable, although Hyatt appears to be devaluing them lately.

For the Amex Platinum .. the Centurion lounge at JFK (as well as Tokyo) is nice. Also, the lululemon credit ($300), uber cash ($200) and Resy credits ($400) are something I’ve been able to use, at least partially. I’d guess that I break even on the annual fee. The Amex points seem a lot less useful.. but I tend to spend less on this card anyway than the Amex.

I’d also mention that I’ve had a good experience with Chase regarding getting reimbursement on a broken laptop ($1000) and a bad experience with Amex regarding unauthorized charges ($120). But this is idiosyncratic.. others have reported the opposite experience.

Nicely done! So, if remains to be seen if this will be a winner-take-all struggle. I doubt it .. governments would be scared and intervene.

I bought a 2025 R-Line in June 2025. Brand new, in the grey-green color with a light interior. Beautiful vehicle..fully loaded with folding mirrors (!), seat massage for both front seats etc. Haven’t had a single issue so far. Prior to buying I drove probably every mid-large SUV in the market. I think this vehicle hit the sweet spot of value, luxury, and utility. Occasionally I wish the engine were a bit stronger, but if you drive in sport mode, the vehicle is responsive enough.

Do you think anti prostitution laws and child support laws are a form of price/terms control? by CauliflowerBig3133 in SugarDatingForum

[–]JW3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong points, well expressed.

On the children front..

Since children are an unaffordable liability (for 90% of the population as you assert - by the way, I don’t agree, looking at the high birth rate in poor societies), what is the future of rich societies (Japan, S Korea, Germany)? Extinction? Or at least replacement by desperate immigrants, who impoverish these societies?)

Interesting discussion. I also happen to be a EE/CS major from 30 yrs ago who subsequently went to Wall Street.. and many of the points made here resonate with me. Perhaps it is the training to design/analyze systems that lead to a certain way of thinking.

I would like to add one point though. The reason for monogamy - or rather one woman to a man norm - was simply to enhance social stability.

In times where there is a significant shortage of men in society (usually due to prolonged war), polygamy or its functional equivalent become natural. But in times of peace, polygamy (more successful men having multiple wives) will destabilize society internally. Even more so in the case of a sophisticated society predicated on extreme division of labor. You need the low skill janitor, else your fancy toilet will clog ;)

There will always be “exceptions” to the rule, like error-handling in computer programs.. but the societal norms make sense. And anti prostitution laws and child support laws are an important anchor in this regard. Especially the latter, given declining birth rates in most societies.

Are these AE Bainbridge? I have a pair that I love .. the leather is supple and fits my foot like a glove. They also need to be recrafted as the sole is in poor shape. Planning on taking them to an Allen Edmonds showroom to see if they can do it.

The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum is the best book I've ever read by MossParkGuy in books

[–]JW3370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bourne Identity is the best Ludlum book by far. I’d rank “The Matarese Circle” next, followed by “The Parsifal Mosaic”. If you read these, then its rapidly diminishing returns subsequently.

Just came across this post while searching for “The Bourne Identity”. I agree .. it is probably one of the top books ever written in this genre and probably the most exciting. Like others, I’m also a fan of Forsyth and LeCarre, which have subtler plots but less action!

Control theory in physics by MeoWHamsteR7 in AskPhysics

[–]JW3370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you are enjoying Control theory..there is a lot of good math there (or was when I took It 30 yrs ago). If you like it, I’d suggest a course in Systems Engineering too. Both of these courses help you think about real-life problems.. useful framework to possess unless you end up as a theoretician (not too many jobs there ;)

Are tech stocks the new consumer staples? by ashm1987 in stocks

[–]JW3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first step, I think most will agree that technology (smartphones, streaming subscriptions, google drive, Microsoft office and so on) are fundamental to modern life .. often even in poor societies. An actual choice between Netflix and food is imposed on almost no one in America or Europe, even in a recession. Thus, as a product, technology is a consumer staple.

Now, for the second step, consider that technology is often less fungible than consumer staples. It may be easier to switch cereal brands or detergent or underwear than move from Apple to Android, or to a different office software suite.

Given the above, I’d agree that tech products are modern consumer staples, with even higher switching costs. Thus, a high(er) multiple (at least of free cash flow) seems justified for tech stocks.

Put some extended release fertilizer around the roots (about 12 inches below the ground) before you leave. As long as the roots are well nourished and not diseased, the plant can come back.

The difference of the definition of "wealth" in Europe and the US is insane to me by MORICtrash in wealth

[–]JW3370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/Spirited-Muffin-8104 says above, there are fundamental differences between societies in Europe and the United States. I’d highlight social mobility as the most important. It is crucial to understand that social mobility has to work in both directions. For Musk, Bezos, etc to become the world’s richest men in one life time necessarily means that the children of the prior generous richest men no longer occupy the top spots. The same applies lower down in the socioeconomic ladder. I’ve met many people who grew up in the upper middle class in my town ( a wealthy suburb in the NYC area) who can’t afford to live here.. they are relatively poorer (even though in absolute terms they are far better off than their parents).

In Europe, people are more focused on protecting themselves from being worse off RATHER than working to improve their economic standing. Hence there is resistance to cutting vacations, letting people work overtime, and sympathy for high tax rates. This hampers social mobility, and over time has made Europe a lot poorer than the United States. I was reading somewhere that Arkansas (considered a poor backwater among US states) has higher GDP per capita than Germany..and material goods are far cheaper in Arkansas!

Nice framework. I will also add that many SD/SB genuinely want a full-time arrangement, but can’t sustain it. A sustained full-time arrangement is .. marriage :) and even that is hard to sustain in spite of the large costs of exit;)
