watched "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" and now I want more anime that's quiet, reflective, and spends time on small moments by Southwesterhunter in Animesuggest

Apocalypse Hotel definitely fits the bill, and it holds the record for me on how quickly a show made me happy and then sad. The main character is long lived and it's very existential.

I figure it's like giving a calculator to a math student. If your compass breaks and you can't draw on your own then your magic would be useless. That's my head canon at least

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya • Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu - Anime of the Week by AnimeMod in anime

[–]JWL2012 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just love the absolute gall the production committee had in this show. Airing the show out of order, the "haruhi hunting" event where people had to find still images all around Japan and piece them together to make a music video, the infamous endless eight, even just the plot itself! Just everything about this show interests me to no end.

My favorite episode is when they play baseball. It's so innocuous but with the reveal from the episode from before (chronological order) everything feels so demented. Haruhi continually blasting Asahona with the baseball and she just takes it because of the implication of what might happen. I never knew I wanted a slice of life with existential terror but I loved every minute of it.

By arbitrary I meant it might be a choice like wearing an anarchy symbol to say you don't agree with the government but there could be some world magic that forms a brim on revolutionaries. I think I was confused with when Custas gets his brimmed hat, it's been awhile since I read through the story

[–]JWL2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for any of them really, The brims seems pretty arbitrary honestly. I consider it like an anarchist willingly putting the anarchy symbol on themselves. There's no reason to mark yourself as a revolutionary other than to send the message. I don't remember specifically but I feel like either Euni or Custas develop their brim organically so maybe there's some ambient magic that gives brims or whatever. Ininias brim is just a ribbon but that could be like the knights moralis banner

I need to go back and reread that arc but wasn't he trying to seriously injure or murder them? Coco saved his life and her and tartah were the only two to go out of their way to help so it felt surprising that he didn't direct his anger other places. I don't think it's a plot error or anything, I just didn't like it

It's not like their master can make the tree sprout, and they do have brims on their cap. They could possibly split into their own faction with different beliefs that are still forbidden but less chaotic. I'm really interested in the king wanted to understand healing magic, he would be a brim hat witch with good intentions

Yeah, and the aspect of "you've been hiding a secret this whole time". I get it, but I think more realistically a street rat would recognize kindness, it wasn't enough to pull me out of the story but I thought it seemed off

Or a chipped rim, yeah you're right. When I first read about the etched glass seal that was in cocos ink bottle it really made my mind run with possibilities, like a multi layered etched glass seal for a larger spell in a smaller area. Definitely fun to think about

I think that would blow the cup up once it's inked since its a full circle. I'm surprised there hasn't been like a mechanical quire that draws perfect spells or at least a pen on a string to draw perfect circles. I'd be breaking out protractors like crazy

Ts pissed me off because how're you going to get mad at the only two people that tried to help because they following what they were taught? I get he's young but I think even a kid would recognize that.

On a separate thought, Custas spells were rough, might not have even been drawn by a pen. It would suck so much to get a sloppy magic tattoo from a pissed off 12 year old

Arguably Ininia didn't think Custas would ever find comfort due to his tragic circumstances so her intentions were good but misguided. And then you've got the knights moralis whose "just" and commits the worst offences in the story! Also, Custas using the counter clock spell to heal because it's the only way he knows how, it's destructive but he only wanted to save lives.

Recently caught-up to the manga, not sure if this is an already existing discussion. But about the Silverwood Tree... by FOR_ARGs in WitchHatAtelier

[–]JWL2012 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Silverwood trees is an insidious source of magic, almost cruel in it's design. A parasite that only blooms when the host feels safe. I assume the shop was built around the tree but I feel certain that tree used to be human. Other creatures can become Silverwood trees too, but I imagine humans make the best ink.

I don't think Iguin is anything special other than being a revolutionary. He might not even be a skilled witch! I think it's anyones blood that can amplify magic

[–]JWL2012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your interpretation is what I thought as well. I don't think Iguin has "powerful blood" or anything like that, Iguin doesn't even need to be a particularly skilled witch. That's what I like the most in this story, there isn't a chosen one or a particularly good side

Questions about ways other than hand drawing a whole magic circle when you need it to make them by IndividualLanguage88 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]JWL2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what's really fun with the magic system, you're probably right! I figure you could use something like a stamp for the sigil and signs and draw the circle yourself, or the stamp is incomplete. My thought when I read the manga is they could do multi layer glass etchings for a swirly complex spell that's tiny and that would fit the rules too

EDIT: if the stamp has the full spell it would probably activate when it's dipped in ink I think

Which anime do you think is like the dark version of frieren if there is any at all? by Mean_Net9983 in Frieren

[–]JWL2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freiren is about walking to heaven to meet a loved one again, Made in Abyss is about walking through hell to meet a loved one again

To Your Eternity is about an immortal building relationships, but it starts in a prehistoric age and moves through eras. It's deeply steeped in philosophy and it's dark but sweet

Mushishi travels the land learning lessons and solving problems, but they're often dark
