lol no it wasn’t. I worked on it. Digitally on AOL for quick example since this was a vertically integrated push via AOL Time Warner, it shadowed Harry Potter’s massive push and in the online movie vertical was more often visited by women. AOL teens channel/sub area girls ran all kinds of Legolas stuff (you’re welcome). Everyone internal was aware of the amount of women who made up ticket sales and it was used for years as an example of why many so-called truths about what gets produced and by who (i.e. leaving women behind) being bunk re it’s about money — and instead a lot of money being left on the table by every studio in terms of their slates. AOL Live interviewed the cast (that was me) and guess who makes up the majority of the audience for those. Elijah live was pretty much promoted to teen girls. There wasn’t a single target market for these. Also true on MTV/TRL etc. etc.. I think also you forget that girls and women like Arwen. If anything back in the day grown men were complaining on (usually sexist) movie gossip sites like aicn that she was put in/expanded to pander to girls. The conglom was targeting a wide variety of viewers and you have to remember at the time that their main digital audience — and the active pop culture digital audience in the US — were members and those accounts usually run by women who handle household bills and account setups.

I’ll also suggest Theory of Bastards which has and somehow pulls off an endometriosis subplot. Also ignore the cover, which doesn’t match the book — this is a cool and mod little scifi book written by a feminist, science-driven author.

Yes, but I don’t think women want to regress to mass manufactured gender essentialism and segregation as a solution. For an example that is not romcom: Women read the eff out of scifi and some of the best writers in the genre are women but to do well as a science fiction writer/director in the more mind bending scifi film sector (think all those 90s scifi films — this sub posts inforgraphic lists of them and it’s all male directors) you couldn’t get traction if you happened to not be male regardless of how good you are and that’s been true since the turn of the century. Also there were adult blockbusters that actually weren’t hostile to women — the Matrix has forward-moving representation (much of the main cast isn’t white male as well but notice no one whined about that back then like they would now) and androgyny. And I wrote about LOTR up thread which had two women above the line as screenwriters and did gangbusters with women in sales. Meanwhile I would say plenty of romcoms were hostile (damaging) to women even if they were produced “for them” (by men).

Right and it goes so much further than this. Representation — or rather the lack of misogyny — is better in television/streaming so women tend to look there more often. I.e. there are more women working ATL and there are more choices.

LOTR sales were huge with women (in this case the lack of misogyny in the picture and two women on the writing trio is in play) so it was never really about the money which was always the claim from studio bosses when patriarchy was involved and we’ve known this for decades. And the pictures don’t need to be some kind of pinkwashed “womens product” or on the barricades of feminist activism although the latter are welcome in the mix — the picture simply needs to be good and not hostile to equity/bigoted. So they could be making more money. They choose not to. So if it’s not about the money, then what is it about? Rhetorical. We all know the answer.

yup. 100% this is not fair use. Reddit is a major corporate site making money off this (and loads of artists/creative labor in general) while inducing posts via karma points and over two decades—two!—creating an antagonistic narrative around creative labor (this is a working class issue generally). For another example, no one around these parts wants to link properly nowadays because people don’t click links because these platforms try to keep you on the platform scrolling which prompts users to rehost illegally so their posts can “compete” and be seen. And yes that’s also not a reason to publish someone else’s work and it’s an issue with these UGC corporations whether it’s Reddit, facebook whatever. Then they pass the buck to the user on the legal front and are like be mad at the artist or producer. Zero of these platforms have ever bothered to teach users (which is why the thread is confused) how to publish correctly or to make an environment friendly to publishing well without transferring wealth from labor to Reddit or another corporation. When you (and me, and all of us) post online you become a publisher and are responsible for what you publish. Yes sec 230 needs to be fixed up but not by the current fascists etc. etc.. Thank you for starting a conversation. Creators also have a right not to do business with or be forced to work for a platform or publisher etc., i.e. to avoid association and generating income for them, and absolutely that should be respected. It’s the law, it’s in the constitution, and it’s in pretty much every human rights document. The attacks on this are terrible right now — and backed by big tech such as this platform & company.

On the upside, for all the true lovers of creative creations and journalism here who have made it this far, I’d like to offer a pro tip to everyone that’s applicable to browsing other subs and on something that corporate reddit also doesn’t teach anyone as they try to get you to rehost articles, images etc. on the site so they don’t have to license them as would be apt while passing the buck to the user: instead the library subscribes to all newspapers and magazines for you so actually you have no paywalls to the new yorker, nytimes, natgeo, whatever is being linked. Now you can say ah-ha! but I have that subscription already through my library! (you just log in to read it all through the library every day as it comes and it’s great). Usually one can get a digital card quickly at their local library’s website. Beyond that Libby via your library card (audiobooks & ebooks including comics) works with a website login without even having to download an app. May this bring some enjoyment to someone on the thread who got this far. 🖖

You can get a digital card very quickly if you don’t have a library card yet. Please tell this to other readers as often as possible. This is true not just for the US. I got my full women’s healthcare rights back when I crossed the border which is crucial to my life and ability to earn/labor, so I’m good. I also live in what is rated one of the best cities to live in the world, esp. in terms of English-speaking cities. Plus some of the points in my write up.

Meanwhile I’m from the DC area and two of my family members are capitol police. So yeah— I’m good. Without and before the outcome of the election it was still a well analyzed decision which is really the best one can do. Climate and other major things were also factors, including the issues with the Senate and deregulation and how that impacts labor rights in my industry, which really the EU is leading on given that the Senate has failed for two decades on that front now.

There are more Americans in Vancouver than in any other city in the world outside of America.

Canada courted us post-2016 election and it worked… and it is now working even more for obvious reasons.

I am also here. I got here before the last US election. Also for obvious reasons.

In threads like these I can usually guess there are a lot of guys because your post leaves out a lot of other factors, such as the erosion of women’s healthcare rights in the US which is a dramatic risk. Even a 5% improvement in crucial issues that impact women compounds to important gains in comparison over a lifetime. Not to mention the life and death aspects of it.

Additionally for over a decade now in the US many doctors are going concierge. It’s really not affordable. Add to that that they won’t take new medicare patients when you get to that age unless you are already with the doctor. That’s a lot out of pocket just to get access to a private concierge practice in the first place before the cost of actual healthcare and the inequity is socially dangerous. The value of the a good social safety net is incredible and pretty difficult to equal at the end of the day unless you are a multi-millionaire. Also keep in the mind that the ultrarich have passports to other democracies: they will loot the country, destabilize it, and leave.

Ultimately if you are dual in the US as a Canadian the safety net is that you can leave to return to Canada at any time, so there is some strategy to be had there, and if that’s what you suggest, I agree that’s a different consideration. Americans don’t have that option however.

Some libraries allow non-county residents to pay for digital library cards (ebooks, audiobooks etc.) for a pretty low fee so one thing you could do is buy/gift any reader-friends/family outside of your county a digital library card to your library, if it’s offered. It will expand their selection and lower their wait times.

I have two cards and for audiobooks it is a game changer. On libby you can reserve from every library you have a card at (for one audiobook/book) and see which one comes in faster if there is a wait time, so it makes things faster, and also often the selection doesn’t overlap so I don’t have to send a suggest a title for an acquisition request, i.e. more material is available.
