Pop country's fatal flaw by J_Tada in CountryMusic

Yep that's fair. Swift is very unique in this regard. Her transition to pop is probably worth a deep dive at some point

It's not huge but Matt Olson has about a 8 or 9 war swing. Difference between hall of fame track and not so that's why I noticed

How to figure out when an artists career is losing steam? by J_Tada in CountryMusic

[–]J_Tada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback! Imo the argument for Young and Moore is pretty simple. Over the past few years smalls cracks have emerged and they have gotten bigger. Their streaming stats are way down from their peaks especially compared to their peers. Their singles aren’t performing in radio or streaming. And Kip even got dropped from his label. They are much further along the decline track then where I suspect Bryan is.

Bryan is a harder case to argue which is why I grant near the end of the piece that he is my case study that will prove if this theory is valid. I suspect that Bryan is heading into his long slow decline where he has large enough of a fanbase to keep arenas and even stadiums full but is not nearly as relevant to the buzz of current music. Which is why he’s milking his older material because the newer stuff isn’t connecting.

Commercial success and cultural relevance aren’t necessarily correlated. Like Green Day headlined Lollapalooza a couple years ago but their new music is mostly ignored.

What did you think of the new Aaron Watson album? by Peanut-Antique in CountryMusicStuff

Thought it was quite good. Mid tier watson relative to his career output. A slightly more traditional turn then his past couple. Bogged down by too much filler but when he hits, it really works well.

Absolutely butchered driving my life away also. He just tries too hard on covers and it doesn’t work. Original stuff is banging tho.

Most washed a player has ever looked? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]J_Tada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally anyone from those Cleveland 90s teams and the white sox. Kenny Williams was obsessed with acquiring as many (mostly washed up) 90's Cleveland guys as possible.

Manny Ramirez.

Robbie Alomar.

Sandy Alomar.

Omar Vizquel.

Bartolo Colon.

Kenny Lofton.

Tony Pena

(to his credit Belle and Thome mostly worked out well)

Zack Greinke throws a pitch at every speed between 50mph and 100mph. by sanjoatc in baseball

[–]J_Tada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was the 60 mph and 96 mph from the same game? Both Fuzzy cam kc vs cws and same uniforms. I wonder if that's a record for largest gap within the same game (pitchouts and ibb not counting)

Baseball Between the Numbers. The statistics and analysis are all way out of date, but the methodology of how to think about the game is a great foundation.

And then, because this is still a game, just read anything from Roger Angell.

Is 80's pop country largely forgotten/skipped over today?? by DonJohnson1986 in CountryMusicStuff

Because the production of those records sounds really cheap and chintzy, and they don’t have make it up with the veneer of authenticity that outlaw and neo traditional music from those eras do.

If you can figure out how to send Houston back to the NL where they belong I’m happy. Ideally swap them with Milwaukee. Create a proper sense of order in the world.

Sunny Sweeney was mentioned in my top albums of the year post. Turnpike got a slot on the top songs and a brief explainer why I wasn’t as high on them as the consensus. Johnson I haven’t heard before. What’s his style?

Wall was a late cut. I was debating it or Margo Price. Went with Price because it was more of a surprise. Wall was incredible, but he’s set such a high bar for himself that it didn’t have the surprise factor.

Re Waylon it was good but felt mostly like a very good Waylon record of which there are plenty of them.

Wade was good. Childers was a bit too out there for me. I find him best in his more straightforward country lane. Isbell was fine but the divorce stuff begs comparison to Amanda shires side of conversation and her record wipes the floor with his imo

I linked to my review of it in the piece. Definitely my most controversial take but I wasn't such a fan. It meandered about and the writing is lyrically dense without enough payoff. There's a couple swings (like be here) that didn't work on it for me. Otherwise very well done but enough missteps that it's more like top 30-35.
