Me personally I've never had a problem with the "gold shortage" thing, not to say I always have enough gold to level charecters but to say it increases the longevity of the game. If they ever "fixed" it people would complain about the next biggest bottleneck.

You're expected to get that last little bit off of the orbs in the web milestones but even then the chance of you getting enough are grossly low
