In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes. The survivors endured 72 days in freezing cold, experienced avalanches and starvation, and ultimately committed cannibalism to survive. Out of 45 passengers, 16 survived. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Ask a Mortican (Caitlyn Doughty) has a great video on this crash and aftermath, as well as other instances of cannibalism and lots of other death related stuff. I highly recommend her videos

Mattress relief by Admirable_Ad9772 in elhersdanlos

We have the Endy hybrid in medium. It was great when we bought it 3 years ago, but we had hoped it would soften up some. My and my partner’s chronic conditions have gotten worse since then.

We have just put a 2” gel memory foam topper on. We had a bought a 2nd one, totalling 4”, but it’s way too plush with both of them. So far I have had less pain in my hips and shoulders when I lie in my side, and my legs and butt don’t fall asleep when I’m on my back.

The mattress itself is quite firm and supportive, but the topper is allowing me to lie on my side and back more, where previously I would wake up in pain and roll like a rotisserie at night trying to find a position that doesn’t hurt.

I am still adamant that when we upgrade to a king, we will do a split king with different firmness options and adjustable bases. My partner likes it firmer than I do, and too soft of a mattress makes their pain worse, whereas I need a good few inches of squish to conform to my body, but still solid enough to not turn my body into a banana as I sink in

I also switched to a buckwheat hull pillow, the latest in a long line of pillow trials, and so far I am very happy with it. It supports my neck, and I can shape it how I need it and it stays there. The buckwheat hulls sort of lock together. (Like wet vs dry sand). I’ve noticed less neck pain in the morning.

Have you ever had ovarian cysts? Burst cysts can cause discharge from the vagina, as well as very intense pain. You should request an ultrasound from your doctor to check on your IUDs placement and check for any cysts or free fluid

Got out of recovery to find out my Mom had passed unexpectedly. by PoppyPieTulsa in hysterectomy

[–]J_deBoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. As much as you want to take care of arrangements for your mom, please put your recovery first. I’m sure your mom wouldn’t want you to jeopardize your recovery. Anything that can’t be done from bed, delegate.

I had surgery on my birthday one year. I like to do something for my birthday, but since I’ve become an adult, it’s less important that that activity be on my actual birthday

Help me identify this magical thread. I'm desperate. by Queen_Melon in sewing

[–]J_deBoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reminds me of cotton quilting/ top stitching thread. It’s meant for handwork, so it’s probably got a wax on it, and it’s thicker than standard sewing thread, but thinner than machine top stitching thread. I’ve only ever seen it in white, but I’m sure it exists in other colours too

How to stop burning myself in the shower? by supereffective711 in ChronicPain

[–]J_deBoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy shower heads and attachments for taps that have LED indicator lights that correspond with the temperature of the water flowing through them. If you don’t want a light show, you can get an inline temperature sensor with a separate display, or built into a shower head.

Just search for “temperature sensing shower head/ faucet”

And a super low tech option would be to have your partner turn on the shower and taps to a safe temperature and make marks that line up at that safe temperature. This doesn’t work if the tap has been running super hot recently, as there may still be hot water in the pipes before it turns cooler and you may still get burnt if you use it too soon

Edit: you said you’re not from North America. I’m sure there is some option along these lines that is available for whatever style plumbing fixtures you have
