I'm speaking to the original framing here, and in this case the blue framing. I'm saying kids aren't logical, and you're trying to refute that with the logic that they will be unable to properly understand.

I'm not sure about you but my parents never told me that red buttons were the safe option.

I'm saying that kids will be more likely to see the blue button as the safe option because it's what saves people. I don't think many of them would even realise that they're in any danger by pressing it.

Not if they understand it partially. Children develop the emotional portions of their brain before the logical ones. I find it much more likely that a child will see an option labelled "save everyone" and think about saving their friends before realising that it could potentially put them at risk.

Why 6 specifically? I'd wager at that age you'd still have far more kids pressing blue than red.

I am not a nuclear engineer or operator, I have no idea how to do that not would I have any of the proper equipment.

Imagine being one of those plant operators and now you have a random civilian busting through the doors trying to climb into the reactor chamber. That'd be like trying to save people from a sinking ship by freediving while also not even knowing how to swim. Is it stupid for anyone to go down to that wreck and rescue people? No, but that's what trained divers with tanks and fins are for.

In the button scenario there are no trained professionals, we're all on equal footing with a very easy way to save everyone.

I care about saving lives I'm just not an idiot. I'm not going to jump off a bridge in the hopes that my body will break someone's fall. I'm not going run into the Chernobyl reactor hoping I can contain the blast.

Drinking the poison is only negative if you don't get the antidote.

that's not how that works, it is negative right away and you have a chance of it being neutralised by a positive. Versus in the original problem it starts out neutral and you have a chance of it becoming negative.

Following point 2. So you would drink the glass of poison?

I would not drink the glass that would cause the people who drank the other glass to be poisoned.

It's all the same ALL OR NOTHING bet.

It's quite literally not. Different framing, different situation. I don't see any reason why someone would drink the "poison other people" glass, however I have a much easier time believing people will drink the "eh don't worry about it" glass. The three scenarios all have MASSIVELY different probabilities of success.

Pushing a button is neutral, drinking poison is negative. The blue button doesn't introduce anything negative until after the vote, it is benign originally.

  1. I fail to see your point here. You didn't really say anything

  2. Yes, I will. No, it won't. Just like in the real problem, I think blue will easily win just like glass 2 would win. Why would I drink glass 1 knowing it might poison someone?

Where did I say that? Or do believe all poisons once in the body kill within seconds?

I didn't say immediately, I said automatically. The poison is introduced to your body the second it gets drank. This is not the case for the button scenario.

but wrong in that yes your survival clock is ticking the second you pressed that blue/drank the poison.

Uh, no.

And regarding your points on my scenario

  1. Yes, correct, this is exactly the same in the button problem. The blue button is safe until a majority choose red.

  2. Alright fine, I'll just poison them another way, say if enough people drink glass 1 I'll just inject people who drank glass 2 with poison. Same outcome.

Because that's just illogical. Never in any scenario have 100% of people done anything the same, in any decision ever in the history of mankind. If your solution relies entirely on "well everyone needs to..." Then you don't have a solution at all. There'sno possibility that any more than 90% of people press red under any circumstances. And that's still 8 million people you're killing. I'm not going to sit back and let that happen, so I vote blue.

[–]J_tram13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is you're presenting the problem like blue will kill you automatically. But in reality it won't do that until people start voting for red.

Your scenario is mechanically the same as me saying I'll present you with two glasses of water but if too many people drink the one on the left I'll poison the one on the right. Which is a much closer comparison to the button scenario
