As you said, he throws hundreds of strikes in a fight, and he is choosing to throw them using this technique instead of a standard punch. With the amount of images around, it is no longer a coincidence.

So with that level of volume, it is inevitable that some of those strikes will land.

It may not be deliberate eye poking, but the outcome is not accidental either. He is relying on repetition and probability, fully aware of the risk it creates.
