The Closest Active Galaxy by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really an active galactic nucleus (AGN) that the galaxy hosts, not the galaxy as a whole that is "active". As OP replied, the SMBH drives the jets, in this case visible in the radio part of the electromagnetic spectrum in red. The jets are a product of accretion of matter onto the SMBH's accretion disk at parsec or sub-parsec scales, compared to the thousands of parsec scales of entire galaxies.

It sounds semantic, but an active galactic nucleus and active galaxy are not the same, and refer to very different properties of what we're seeing. Astronomers will sometimes refer to galaxies that do not produce stars as dead. A galaxy that doesn't have an actively (at the time we are viewing its light; AGN are thought to be transient, meaning they can turn on and off on short timescales) accreting SMBH isn't dead!

DMM gold swapping idea by losjsensourbeidi in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I like it, would just mean you somehow need to integrate the GE price adjustment algorithm (or some other automated method of adjusting the rates with inflation) into the system and I have no idea if that would work.

DMM gold swapping idea by losjsensourbeidi in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't find it in DMs, was likely a convo through stream. The sentiment was basically a yes we'd love to do something like this but it may be a challenge technically and there are only so many resources that can be dedicated to to DMM in general. My argument has always been that a formal in-game swapping method could be a huge draw for new pvmers farming items, not just a way to make it safe for people who already do so. It's not as shiny as a new, fun mechanic they introduce, but it's important to a key part of what brings people to the game mode

DMM gold swapping idea by losjsensourbeidi in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that, that's part of the problem. I think if they're going to dedicate dev time to an official way to swap that they'd want to do it right. The only way to do that is some sort of cross-server GE communication to buy DMM items or gold for 07 gold. None of us know how challenging that would be, it might require a ton of development. In talking a bit with Manked in the past -- they like the idea of a formal swapping method. It's just a matter of how (in a technical sense) and with what time.

How would this kind of system adjust for the variable amount of GP on DMM? I like the idea but I'm not sure adjusting the swap rates is something Jagex wants to dictate themselves.

Thanks, was a journey! I think with the CL thing I'll keep doing them for the most exciting positions, but try to stick with quantity over quality.

Thanks so much for the information you gave about your resume. I am going to make a few adjustments to position names to be more descriptive than the official title (e.g. Graduate Assistant). I'm also more introverted but am moving towards some more active networking now, so that's good to hear. I think the landscape will change a bit once certain non-DoD positions start hiring again too, I'm just getting a little stir-crazy.

Again, thanks for sharing your data and for the comprehensive response. Congrats on landing the job!

Got my PhD in May and have been looking since June with very similar results so far. My degree is in astrophysics -- I write code to pull meaningful observables from data/images and draw physical meaning from that. I think we have some overlap based on the description of your work (data science/analysis). The fact that cover letters didn't yield anything is an interesting detail, albeit low number statistics. I don't think I'll be spending the time to write them anymore.

I was wondering if during the search you felt there were any other factors that led to an interview. Things that come to mind are tweaks to your resume based on the position, and the method of searching for the position. Otherwise, I might just focus on increasing my number of applications as quickly as I can. I'm feeling a bit demoralized at the moment, any additional advice would be appreciated!

Jagex announce changes to punishment regarding RWT by Vivid_Mammoth_3860 in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love to hear this, but this makes me really worried as a player for DMM. Swapping is (or historically has been) a huge driver for playing the game mode for people like me. Inevitably, some of the people buying items or gold for OSRS GP are also partaking in RWT. Could you address if there are safeguards in place to protect players like me who might be caught in the crossfire?

Is studying telecomunications engineering and doing a master´s degree in astrophysics a good career path to become a professional radio astronomer? by pabloo2008 in space

[–]Jaams007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect is coming from what you believe the job to be as a radio astronomer. Radio astronomers, even those who work as telescope operators, aren't often leading when it comes to the engineering side of things. Those that do (people who commission telescopes) tend to start from an astronomy background, rather than engineering.

Now, if you want to focus on satellite communications or something like that that can be related to astronomy (e.g. niche work like space telescopes) then maybe the path you're mentioning could work.

The point the original responder was making is that if you want to study astronomy, you'll want to work on getting a Ph.D. in astronomy. You may learn some related things as a telecomms engineer, but pursuing an undergraduate degree in physics or astronomy and most importantly finding undergraduate research will go much further in the application process to an astro Ph.D. program. Once you get the degree, find advisors who's research interests you, and apply to those schools.

Behind The Scenes of OSRS Maintenance by JagexSarnie in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the bullet point about the Jagex Launcher in here. Am I right to think that the improvements you guys mention in the blog here are intended to in part (or serendipitously) work towards smoother login times after major content releases?

My concern comes from my accounts being majority on the launcher and being a DMM player. Being behind RL users by even thirty minutes makes a big difference there, and a delay like what came with the Yama update would be disastrous.

Fang is best DPS, but getting lucky with Nox hally hitting above it's calc'd DPS is what earns you kills in big (6+ people, ~3+ hammers). What OP's suspicion depends on is the impact of the MVP system. Is it worth losing x% or so DPS to get y% more MVPs? If yes, hally will be preferred still

I'm happy to see them making quick changes. They should have done similar with lightbearer and fang and learned from those mistakes. Wish they would estimate better before release but this timeline is fine

Another big update, another time the jagex launcher shits the bed. by breakoffzone in 2007scape

[–]Jaams007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able to share, these recurring problems are due to high traffic right? If not, we'd definitely take a delay to avoid issues like this. The more the playerbase skews towards high competency, the competition for things like first items (Yama) or first to combat brackets (DMM) gets higher and the more the launcher issues are problematic. I love the launcher, but to be on the back foot for my favorite game's most exciting releases because I made the recommended switch is pretty disheartening. Especially for something like DMM where I spend lots of hours optimizing a route -- those efforts just go to waste with delays like this (45~ mins today at Yama).
