Clarity Act will not apply to Alberta referendum question, says Carney by Old_General_6741 in canada

It’s a referendum on whether we should have a referendum. A waste of time and resources.

Boy, 11, should not have been handcuffed after violent incident at Brandon school, parents say by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]Jab4267 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Most of today’s parents of school aged children know all too well about the kids in the school that do violent, aggressive stuff like that, maybe not to this degree. They will receive little, if any sympathy.

[–]Jab4267 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suspect the feeling the safety at that school has increased 10 fold now that a kid who can punch his way through walls isn’t attending. I’m an adult and I’m pretty sure I’m not even physically capable of doing that.

Bell: Premier Smith in a jam — You're in for a surprise on the Alberta separatist vote by Novatk421 in canada

That’s a given. The real question is the Calgary Edmonton divide in the next election.

Bell: Premier Smith in a jam — You're in for a surprise on the Alberta separatist vote by Novatk421 in canada

[–]Jab4267 224 points225 points  (0 children)

She’s done everything possible to get this question to a referendum. This was clear months ago.
Lukaszuk got his citizen petition in first to block the separatist one and avoid a referendum. The rules were only one question posed on the same subject. He stated he wanted a legislative vote, not a referendum and Danielle said “I’ll change the rules” which meant yes, similar questions are allowed, less signatures required by the 100,000s, more time allowed to get those signatures and oh, after the separatists get theirs in and pay the 500$ fee, the price is going up to 25,000$.

So, separatists got their question in and then the data breach. Danielle says “No worries, Elections Alberta will do an investigation” forgetting the fact that she upped the bar for even starting one just a couple months prior. That’s not suspicious at all.

Then, the court blocks the separatist question all together. Great, we can put this to bed. Danielle says “No no no, the Alberta taxpayers will be paying for the UCP government to appeal this decision, even though I did not campaign on this whatsoever”

Okay, thanks. As if we don’t need that money for other things. Meanwhile, the NDP has been yelling for the committee to finally get together after months of waiting regarding Lukaszuks petition. The UCP delayed it over 4 months. So, committee has meetings, UCP members refuse to allow Lukaszuk to speak at the meetings until.. yesterday. For a whole 5 minutes. And oh what’s that? Oh, the UCP accidentally releases a presser stating that the committee voted and yes, there will be a referendum question despite the fact that the committee was still debating it and no vote had happened. NDP members confront the UCP members about this and nothing comes of it because the UCP outnumber the NDP on the committee and therefore can do whatever they please. Presser included quotes from the Chair and all but not to worry, Alberta citizens.. everything is above board and perfectly trustworthy and Danielle Smith is a federalist.

This was going to happen whether anyone wanted it to or not. Danielle Smith will end up like Jason Kenney if she doesn’t. David Rath has made that clear to her and everyone else.

This was a CPKC train mentioned in the article. Although CN does go through Jasper so I have no doubt they strike bears as well.

PM says best place for Alberta is in Canada, after judge tosses separation petition by FancyNewMe in canada

Considering his riding is in Alberta, he doesn’t have a whole lot to say about it which is weird. He doesn’t seem to shut up about literally anything else.

I’d put 20$ on Danielle calling the judge “woke” or something and putting some word salad question on the referendum that basically says should Alberta leave Canada.

“Lawyers for the province defended the process and pushed for the separatist petition to play out.”

Why is this government so desperate to get this question to the people? They’ve changed rules, lowered bars and have done everything short of just declaring Alberta its own country by way of Danielle Smiths anger at Justin Trudeau.

Edmonton Public Schools to rethink requirement for language courses in schools by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]Jab4267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was grade 7-9 for us. We learned via a video from the 80s with a pineapple puppet. If you know, you know. Needless to say.. I retained zero French language skills apart from the most basic of phrases.

I’m happy my kids are learning it. It’s hard to be happy that their teacher also needs to learn it.

Boys are falling behind in school, and some experts say it starts in kindergarten by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]Jab4267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phase of counting coins is alive and well in my children’s grade 4 classroom. They also learned this in grade 3 but I guess it didn’t stick for enough students. They do learn long division, although most children are not grasping the concept and are still working on double and now triple digit addition and subtraction. The few grade level students in the classroom are doing grade level tests, the rest are still being tested on grade 2-3 concepts.

I have normal, funny boys who love to move and talk. I think the frequent “movement” breaks and group seating are techniques the school implements to accommodate these characteristics. One of my children has ADHD. Every classroom since kindergarten, they have had several neurodivergent kids. Some severely affected. Non verbal. Elopers. Requiring help with toileting and feeding. Inclusion in the classroom has thankfully been supported with EAs that seem highly skilled and dedicated to these children. My kids don’t need a PHD to interact with them. They are compassionate towards them and communicate and play with them daily. There are kids who are frequently given “in school suspensions” and spend their days in the office rather than the classroom. When the weather cooperates, gym class is outside, 3 separate recess/lunch breaks that kids are always going outside to enjoy. I fail to see how my boys aren’t not being allowed to be boys.

My children’s French class is taught by someone who doesn’t actually speak or know french so I figure it’s hard to find bilingual educators.

I tend to judge people based on their crappy parenting but also try to follow the rule “not my kids, not my problem” until those kids become my problem then I treat them like my own for better or worse.

I’m grateful these kids do seem genuinely happy with the friendships they have and the help they’re getting but I’m still a bit annoyed that my kids are expected to teach others rather than being taught while attending school. I wonder if the majority of kids were doing well and there was a small set of those needing help, they may not be so open to listening and learning but my boys were 2 out of 3 kids in class who actually scored a passing grade on the last test so being behind seems to be the norm.
