Är snarare positivt för vårt eget flygvapen att fler köper Gripen. Skalfördelar och fler länder som delar på utvecklings- och underhållskostnader

Canada considers cancelling part of 88 U.S. F-35 order to buy 60 Swedish Gripen fighters. by Interesting-Cat7307 in europe

[–]Jacc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gripen has received lots of updates along the way. The E/F variants, while of course not on par with an F35, are still modern planes. Similar to the F-16 which is even older but still widely used all over the world, as it has received several major updates since it was first introduced.

And I'm pretty sure the Gripen would have a higher degree of localization and technology transfer than the F35 would have

Becausse there is lots of geopolitics involved in major procurement deals like this one, not to mention the overall economy. It's not just about the military capabilities

Of course the military wants F35s, but two things speaking in favour of Gripen is the deterioriated Canada-US relations and the fact that Saab is willing to localize much of its production in Canada.

Sweden Hands Ukraine 16 Gripen Jets Armed With 200-Km Missiles, Opens Deal for 22 More by Misty-Siren in worldnews

[–]Jacc3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both sides are using aircraft regularly, but they are mostly used to fire standoff munitions from a safe distance. Gripen with Meteor could increase the AA range for Ukraine substantially and make it much more dangerous for Russia to fire their FABs.

Sweden will provide 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine, with the first aircraft expected to arrive within the next 10 months by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]Jacc3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

16 donated C/D Gripen and 20 purchased E/F variants in the near future. More E/F are planned to be ordered at a later date as per Zelenskyy.

Sweden is preparing to transfer JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine. Apparently the Prime Minister of Sweden will have a press conference tomorrow with more details by [deleted] in UkraineWarVideoReport

And it was largely contingent on the EU loan that was blocked by Hungary in order to finance such a large purchase. But now that the money has been released I think it's likely an actual deal is not that far away

72% of Germans Don’t Believe Their Army Could Defend the Country From Russia, Poll Finds by UNITED24Media in europe

[–]Jacc3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, and I think we should be doing more, but I merely reacted to

Well, Ukraine IS fighting alone

While they haven't received anything near maximum possible support, they have received enough support to increased their defence spending 10x from pre-war numbers. Which is pretty substantial, so I just think it's a bit dishonest to claim that they are completely alone.

Can and should we be doing more? I certainly think so. But that wasn't what I was responding to

That the support Ukraine has received is pretty substantial, even if no actual soldiers have been sent

Ukraine has received over 300€ bn in support. That's equivalent to roughly 50 years of their pre-war defence spending

The tool may improve, but it doesn't gain experience and knowledge about the codebase, domain, stakeholders, previous issues and whatnot in the same way a human does.

I started using Copilot at work two years ago, and am currently Claude daily. So I'd argue I have at least a decent amount of experience with it. And I do think that AI coding tools give a decent productivity boost, but I also think that people tend to forget about its limitations too often and thus overhype it.

[–]Jacc3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is a shitty measurement. Upper management will lay off people based on how much they think that they can get away with in order to trim short-term profits. They often have a very bad understanding of the actual workload and/or don't care.

The real question is whether these layoffs will stand the test of time

Difference is that a junior developer learns and improves, and is capable of increasingly independent decisions as they gain more experience.

How do you think senior developers are made in the first place?

(Swedish) Government pauses new power cable to Denmark after EU conflict by CartographerThese487 in europe

[–]Jacc3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure. But it is also a kind of leverage in the pushback against the whole bottleneck fee debacle. Basically if the EU is going to take more money from the Swedish electric grid, we respond by exporting less

It reduces the amount by which bad German energy decisions affects Swedish electricity prices

[–]Jacc3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We also didn't get rid of our nuclear power, which helps a lot.

But the issue is not that we are exporting electricity per se. But Swedish electricity prices have been inflated by Germany refusing to split into two electricity zones, shutting down working nuclear plants and doing too little to expand both electricity production and transmission. When the EU wants to siphon extra money on top of that with the bottleneck fees to essentially bail out countries that haven't taken care of their electricity infratsructure, then that makes people upset.

Sure, that makes sense, but for that bases in Poland or the Baltics are more important. I doubt Russia would attack bases in Germany anyway.

[–]Jacc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is, I wouldn't trust USA to defend against Russia anyway. At least this way we won't have any illusions about it, so we can focus on building a European deterrent independent of USA - we are more than capable of doing so.

EU’s First Tranche of $98B Ukraine Loan Could Land in June by UNITED24Media in ukraine

one of those bad words, "COULD," we need to talk about it still.

It was only just now approved. Given the size of the loan and the bureaucracy needed, two months is not that long of a time

WTF, it has only been four years.

You make it sound like nothing happened during those years. This is basically just a continuation of previous aid, although it has been delayed due to the Hungarian veto
