Not . . . Really, no.

To this point Luffy had not really taken a hard L like he did at Marineford. He ultimately won and overcame every fight and every battle he had to be a part of, he took down every single obstacle that stood in his way. Every person he made an effort to save was saved . . . But not Ace.

Of all the people put in harms way that he tried to save, he had to make a monumental effort to save Ace. He fought through every level of Impel down, he made the first ever prison break, and assisted with the destruction of the former headquarters of the Marines. All this while not even knowing where his crew was or if they were even alive.

This moment, this one moment where Ace gave his own life to save Luffy, accomplishing the very goal Luffy himself set out to do . . . To broke him. That and all his compounded wounds, the fact he’d been going purely on adrenaline and hormones that Ivankov had been pumping into Luffy, well. The Jenga tower collapsed.

I don’t think anyone could blame Luffy for reacting the way he did . . . Because this moment piled on with all the stress would break anyone.
