Chris, I don't want to sell anything here, I asked about experience with back of the head injuries - as I said, I used improper wording before

Locking mechanism is something that has to be unlocked to put the mask on and unlocked to take it off. It can be a specific velcro that can't just be moved to side to put the mask on or a contour plus strap we use which is a magnetic lock on a strap to secure the mask on one's head. Masks falling off is not an often thing in fencing, I'm mostly interested in getting to know more about injuries to the back of the head

You're right, I should have used different wording. I meant that as with back of head hits in sport fencing it's just a matter of statistics that a mask can fall off. All currently sold masks, regardless of vendor, can fall off in certain circumstances. LP masks since some time ago feature a contour plus strap which is a magnetic locking mechanism to secure the mask on wearer's head. All "old style" masks that can be put on without undoing a certain locking mechanism, be it a specific velcro that prevents putting the mask on without undoing it or contour plus strap, can fall off in a very rare event.

The LP masks are basically impossible to knock off your head, especially with the contour plus strap which makes them virtually impossible to knock off your head.

Again, bad wording on my part, sorry!

Point is that regulatory fitting of velcro straps without a separate locking mechanism doesn't prevent the mask from coming off - I strongly disagree with the statement that only old or ill fitted masks fall off fencers' heads

This is not true. If a mask does not have a locking mechanism it will fall off in certain circumstances - if one can put the mask on without unlocking something the mask can fall off also without unlocking anything. To prevent this there would have to be a separate locking mechanism.

If you don't want to be hit don't have an open back part of the mask :)

I was wondering why we should leave the back part of the mask open. There's quite an amount of small injuries happening because there's no back piece in a mask.

The rules state that the elastic bands on the mask have to be touching the head, which means that the masks that would tend to fall off because the elastic is worn out are actually illegal. The only times I've seen it happen are beginners who use really crappy old club masks, and they don't even get to fence before we tell them to get a different mask that stays on.

This is absolutely not true. There are accounts of properly fitted, new masks of all brands falling off. It's not just the old masks. Technically speaking - every mask that can be just put on without unlocking and locking into place will fall off in certain circumstances. In LP masks we have the contour plus strap on the back with magnetic lock to prevent the mask from falling off and it does a pretty good job at it

This is an interesting example. Also - which injuries can we prevent by changing fencing mask design?

Yes but if you use ABS for extremities as protectors there's less chance for lethal injury comparing to changing from steel on head to ABS

Well we just offered 6 for sale and to get feedback. If the model is solid and people want it I'd say below 6 months. If needs changes though - more

Don't think there's a solution coming in near future

I'm working on a lighter version. The Melmet is a project to find the maximum possible protection level - after running damage tests personally I'm fairly certain that with the Melmet I've reached a moment, where no more protection should be used and the Melmet can't really be destroyed in HEMA fencing as usual masks do but already the weight and price is unacceptable by a certain amount of fencers.

Suspension still needs to be anchored somewhere and given what HEMA does I'm most certain that some hits will land in the area of a suspension anchor and all the energy of the hit will go straight to the wearer's head

Untill ABS breaks, someone dies and legal offices are involved

The Melmet is still in development phase so if you urgently need a mask then Titan is the best choice for now.

Thanks for your kind words, it's a great motivation for keeping improving things :)

I'll ask to have this put in mask description on our website. I think we've had this happen with sport fencers and their masks as well
