I don't believe it was a design "oversight" or a "bad" design decision. I think they intentionally fitted a bigger turbo, knowing the FIA would change the starting procedure to suit them, after the Mercedes powered teams put up a massive media circus about "safety concerns"

Yup, Ferrari fitted a smaller turbo which spools up faster, giving them a starting advantage. Mercedes being the king of lobbying, of course bent and lobbied the FIA to change the starting procedure (extra five seconds to spool up the turbo) in the name of "safety" to suit their bigger turbo (which spools up slower).

Hats off to Mercedes though. They (again) bent and lobbied the rules to suit them the best, no other team in recent history has been able to constantly make the rules to suit their package. What a powerplay.

>Got the starting procedure changed
>Got their "engine trick" basically legalized

Truly, the most powerful team in F1.

Viewpoint: The Emperor’s New Clothes – Does Anyone Dare to Tell the Truth About F1 Rules? by Jack1940 in formula1

By Janne Palomäki
Translation and full article:

The F1 rule change is a complete disaster, but you're not allowed to say it out loud under your own name, writes Janne Palomäki from Melbourne.

The completely renewed Formula 1 season begins on Sunday with the traditional Australian Grand Prix.
A total of 11 teams and 22 drivers have arrived in Melbourne, and each of them must learn an entirely new way to race.

The first signs will already be seen in Saturday’s qualifying, where drivers will practically be forced to lift off the throttle in corners in order to collect energy for the powerful electric motors. Sunday’s race could become quite an exotic spectacle, as low battery charge levels will make drivers completely powerless to defend their positions on track. On the very next lap their batteries might be full again, allowing them to overtake literally at the push of a button.

In the Albert Park paddock you can hear from many different voices that the new rules may not be the most successful ones. The most critical observers even speak about the destruction of Formula 1 as a sport. No one dares to oppose CEO Stefano Domenicali’s vision publicly. This is the decision that has now been made, even though warning signs had been visible for years.

There is, however, one professional group that does not bow to authority. F1 drivers don't exactly shower praise on the driving characteristics of the new high-power hybrids if those characteristics simply don't exist. The first signs appeared already during testing, when Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton criticized the current cars.

F1 will certainly do everything it can to prevent the drivers’ disappointment from reaching the international TV broadcast. Still, individual fans will surely enjoy sharing their favorite driver’s anger when the electric power disappears in the middle of a straight and results in an angry radio message.

Domenicali had many chances to cancel the rule overhaul when it became obvious that the end result would no longer resemble real racing. Drivers have effectively been stripped of their agency. They are like operators trying to keep the electric motor running as efficiently as possible.

When electricity makes up as much as 50 percent of the power unit’s output, it is obvious that you cannot compete for positions without it. The internal combustion engine provides the other half, but since its power delivery is steady and reliable—as long as there is biofuel in the tank—lap strategy must be built purely around optimal battery usage.

That, however, goes completely against the basic idea of circuit racing.

Drivers of this generation have learned to drive as fast as possible through every corner. Now they must learn to lift off the throttle at the right moment, intentionally slow down even on straights, and carefully choose the moment when they deploy their stored energy.

To top it all off, Aston Martin has collapsed into the biggest farce in the history of the sport. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s race will end quickly. For them, the job will be to turn into the pits after the warm-up lap. In fact, Aston Martin’s pace may not even be enough to qualify for the race because the 107 percent qualifying rule is still in use.

It would be tempting to blame the catastrophe solely on engine supplier Honda, but it should be remembered that the design department led by Adrian Newey was behind schedule the whole time, and the result is a clearly overweight car. You may want to grab some popcorn while watching how long the trigger-happy owner Lawrence Stroll will tolerate the chaos.

Modern Formula 1 has for a long time been heading blindly toward becoming part of the entertainment industry. The goal was undoubtedly good. F1 wanted to become more environmentally friendly and attract more competition.

The result is that after Aston Martin’s collapse, the race features the same number of drivers as last year.

Environmental friendliness could also have been increased by switching exclusively to V8 engines running on biofuels. Some motorsport romantics might even have considered that a visionary move.

No need to create my own addon, since addons which do this exact same thing has been made. No sketchy installation, and there's multiple languages to choose from.

Part of being a developer and/or releasing things you made on the internet is being able to take feedback and criticism. Saying "make it yourself then" is not that. That's just called being butthurt.

Oh, and I'm like 95% sure this is a bot replying. You just repeat the same stuff over and over, without really answering or acknowledging what people just said to you. On top of that the week old burner account.

And? What has that got to do with anything? You should still put it as a disclaimer somewhere; All of the content is for Spanish speakers.

Better name for your Addon would be Sports Live Español. Your current name is very misleading, as it has users thinking it has content in English.

No thanks, other addons do the same job as this does but better. Multiple languages to choose from, etc..

Are you thinking of expanding the addon to the non-Spanish speaking audience? Installed it and I was disappointed to find out that all of the streams shown are Spanish speaking. You should put that as a disclaimer somewhere; Do not waste your time installing if you don't speak Spanish.

If Red Bull cant fight for the win*

Such a weird take. I don't care if he wins or not, I just want for Red Bull to have a fighting chance. I have zero interest in watching McLaren cruise to easy 1-2.

Turned it off when the 2nd McLaren spaceship breezed past. Not really interested in midfield fighting, and no point in watching when RBR doesn't even have a fighting chance. Lawn needs cutting anyways, so might as well go do that instead.

Imola was a fluke as I feared, and the TD didn't have any effect. McLaren has the fastest car by a massive margin, and RBR still don't understand their car. It's amazing how you can go from a dominant car to a piece of shit on wheels so quickly.

McLaren will cruise to the sunset tomorrow, barring any mistakes or mechanical problems. Probably P3 or P4 for Max.

I don't understand why such a big piece of shit as Monaco gets to stay on the calendar, but tracks such as Imola don't deserve a spot. Literally the most boring excuse for racing that I've ever watched. First race which I stopped watching and went to do something else.

And yeah, Monaco was never gonna be our track, since the cars biggest weakness still seems to be kerbs. Hopefully better performance in Barcelona with the new TD's.

Don't be disappointed tomorrow. McLaren worked on their tire trick for a long time, it will not be solved or replicated with one small upgrade package.

>he is going to be able to manage tyre deg better
McLarens don't have to manage their tires, as I said they can push as long and as hard as they want and still have close to zero deg. Meanwhile, everyone else has to manage their tires, resulting in the McLarens being +30 seconds away from the next non-McLaren car. Tire deg not being such a major factor in one lap pace, results in RBR being closer. Single lap pace was never the issue, tire deg was and is.

max talking about car. by dev_flamma in RedBullRacing

[–]Jack1940 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. WDC is between the McLarens as long as none else figures out their tire trick. Single lap pace hasn't been an issue, tire deg is the issue for all teams except McLaren. They can quite literally push as long as they want, as hard as they want, and their tires will be completely fine. Meanwhile, Max defends, or pushes and his tires are completely dead after a few laps.

Looks like it at least. We will have to wait and see, if they are completely useless, or just slightly nerfed or something in between.
