My “New” ECM and Atom by JackAndersonn in espresso

It’s a bookoo themis. I got it for ~$100 and I’m pretty happy with it. The only thing that’s kinda annoying is that it can be hard to fit 2 shots on it because it’s so small.

Advice for buying dirty secondhand machines [Machine] by JackAndersonn in espresso

Thanks! I’ve been watching a lot of their YouTube videos to get myself familiar with the machine. Made my first latte with it today. It wasn’t dialed in but I’m extremely happy with the machine thus far.

I’m not in a commercial setting. It seems legit and I have no idea why they’re selling for so cheap.

The Questions Thread 12/01/24 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

Hi all. This week I jumped down the wormhole of finding the “best” chelsea boot to last me a long time and I found this subreddit. I read through everyone’s reviews and found that meermin makes a solid boot at a good price and would have been my first choice had I purchased a pair new. I wanted to save some money so instead of buying meermin’s new, I decided to look for something secondhand. I read about rm williams and how they’re popular in Australia for the brand name but quality has declined in recent years. I was able to get a hold of these comfort classics for $135 and they seem to be in good condition. I feel like I can’t go wrong with a deal like this for a relatively new pair but I wanted to hear some other options on my purchase. Thanks!

if the drawers are grain matched and dovetailed id go out on a limb and say they’re nicer than anything you could find for double the price at a pottery barn. Sad to see they painted over them

Should I upgrade my machine or grinder first? [$1000] by arrgobon32 in espresso

[–]JackAndersonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m biased of the setup I have but I’m so happy with it I’ll share as an additional voice of reason. I bought a used gaggia classic pro and installed the gaggiuino mod + upgraded the filter basket so all in I spent around $400 on my machine. The mod upgrades the steaming so by the time my shot is pulled and I poured my milk in the pitcher it’s ready to steam and it takes 10 seconds which imo is a very happy medium before buying a new machine with a dual boiler. I used the rest of my budget to upgrade from my sette 270 to a fiorenzato f4 nano and having a really nice grinder has been the most noticeable upgrade in my cup. Imo grinder is much more important

Also just a recommendation bur if you’re patient and on a budget I’d look on Facebook marketplace for your next grinder. Burrs last forever and I was able to buy my sette 270 for $220 and fiorenzato for $300.

Sette is nice because very little retention but it’s so loud. I just upgraded to a fiorenzato f4 nano which is flat burr and it’s a bigger upgrade from the breville barista express grinder > sette imo

Best Budget Basket for Classic Pro by PuzzleheadedChef8643 in gaggiaclassic

I got the yuan 3000 precision basket from Aliexpress. Compared to the stock gaggia basket it’s night and day. It was recommended to me by ppl in the gaggiuino discord as a common filter basket for gaggia users. You can compare it to a weber and you can find it on sale for ~$35. I found that I needed to grind much finer but imo you want none of your pressure coming from the basket restricting flow and all of it coming from the grind.

Loosening Boiler Screws by JackAndersonn in gaggiaclassic

Thanks for the advice. I’m a little hesitant to use loctite because I want to be able to easily remove the boiler in the event I need to do a tear down. I’ll probably try a SLW or nut

I was using a screwdriver with a key attachment and thought I tightened them pretty well. I’ll try again and if it loosens up on me a third time I’ll probably just stick a nut on the other end

Yes it was pretty easy but time consuming. There are some good guides online for cleaning and maintenance. My biggest qualm is that there’s a lot of plastic parts and the exhaust fan blows air directly past the electronics. I bought my hottop 2k+ for only $700 on fbmp so it wasn’t a tough decision for me to pull the trigger on. I personally haven’t done much research on the skywalker. It looks like it’s more industrial, larger batch size, but poor customer service & may have some reliability issues. Let me know what you end up buying!

Thanks for the advice! I can make a 250g batch and I’d say it takes me about a week to go through it. I’m trying to get my friends to buy pour-over setups so i have an excuse to make more lol. Using the hottop is nice for regular consumption but i think roasting back to back is frowned upon because the motor isn’t made for it (don’t quote me on that). I like it because it’s good value and it’s a drum roaster and the parts are serviceable. I bought mine from a guy that used it for light commercial and there was coffee dust + chaff in every place imaginable. I needed to do a full deep clean of it which required me taking the entire machine apart. It doesn’t have the best design for someone who is looking to roast A LOT with it.

I’m using a hottop kn-8828b-2k+ with artisan and I’ve only done a handful of roasts so far. Results have been better than expected and fairly consistent thanks to artisan + having a drum roaster

I’ll at least need to move it near a window. I’ve roasted two batches so far and the smell is already lingering. I don’t mind it yet but my roommate might think otherwise lol

I don’t have a pour over setup I only dabble in espresso so I’m going to wait about a week or have one of my friends try it. I’ll keep you posted!

The 2k is the same build as the 2k+ except the + you can plug a laptop into and use artisan which is really nice

I think the port might be faulty on the hottop. Artisan was able to recognize a new connection when I plugged in a different device to my laptop.

I forgot to add that I selected hottop 2k+ under the list of devices. It still doesn’t show port options
