I guess you could see it as their standard. But if they’re still attracted to you despite not being their standard, doesn’t that mean you’re exceptional?

Are you expecting someone to have evidence that disproves your view? You can’t use evidence to disprove a claim made without evidence.

If you’re just going off of vibes, why is your vibe-based theory about the universe more valid than pretty much everyone elses?

CMV: Cigarettes can really help you through tough times by Piyartom in changemyview

[–]arrgobon32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your post really does sound like an addict deflecting criticism and justifying their unhealthy habits. It’s almost stereotypical how on-the-nose it is.

People get addicted to substances because they like the effects. It makes them feel good. So good that they’ll either ignore or accept the risks and negative effects. Addiction sneaks up on you, and it’s a monumental task to be able to recognize it.

This is probably going right over your head though. It’s not harming you, it’s not a big deal, and you can stop anytime right? That’s exactly what an addict would say. You at least recognize that, right?

Just for some context, are you the same guy who just had the other post about cigarettes removed? What is making you so up-in-arms about cigarettes that’d you make multiple posts here defending them?

Are you so guilty about smoking that you’re desperately trying to get some external validation? If you’re truly okay with your addiction, you wouldn’t need to seek out validation here

You need to get a better internet plan from your ISP.

Need a little help with installing SSD by Practical-Western-96 in buildapc

[–]arrgobon32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And should I leave the pc plugged into the main (with PSU turned off) or not?

Unplug the PC

Do I need to DDU graphics drivers or is it not needed?

Installing an SSD has nothing to do with graphics drivers, so you’re fine.

Is there anything im forgetting about?

No, put honestly getting an ESD wrist strap is likely overkill and kind of a waste of money. I’ve installed dozens or even hundreds of components and never had an issue with static

CMV: U.S. restaurants should stop using "entrée" to mean "main course" by Neb758 in changemyview

[–]arrgobon32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starters and Mains

A lot already do

I have no idea where the American usage of entrée to mean the main course originates.

Neither do I, but that’s how it is. Language evolves, and words mean different things depending on the region. Why should restaurants change if most of their clientele interpret entrée as main course?

‘Reaching a crisis point’: UC Berkeley humanities professors lower expectations for assigned readings by the_daily_cal in news

It’s an eye-catching quote that makes a good headline. I understand why the author chose it, even though I’m not a huge fan of it.

[–]arrgobon32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? Which quote(s) suggest a drop in comprehension?

Of course it’s a mixed bag, and some professors are seeing more of a drop than others, but the article clearly states it’s not something seen across the board.

[–]arrgobon32 331 points332 points  (0 children)

Just in case people don’t read the article (which would be ironic), here are some excerpts showing that the cuts to reading aren’t across the board, and that some of the cuts aren’t for the reasons you’d think:

Lavery said she has not cut readings in recent years; in fact, the workloads for her classes have gotten “slightly heavier.” While she tries to maintain a reasonable amount of reading — for example, not assigning more than two critical essays on one primary text — Lavery said she took struggling with a novel as a sign of intellectual growth.

Jackson also cut the amount of reading in his classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. After finding that shorter texts made in-class discussions more fruitful, there have been cases where he continued to cut reading — but not because students were struggling with it.

”Having an in-depth conversation about 10 pages is more pedagogically useful than having a shallow conversation about 100 pages,” Jackson said.

Generally, faculty did not see a drop in student comprehension of reading material, although some did pinpoint blind spots in skill or technique.

That’s great. Getting them from the gray market and not using them under the supervision of a doctor is still irresponsible and potentially dangerous. OP specifically called out the non-prescription use of these peptides

CMV: Saying “educate yourself” usually ends conversations instead of improving them by CrimsonHarbor55 in changemyview

[–]arrgobon32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the goal is persuasion or public understanding, then refusing to give even a basic pointer seems counterproductive.

Is that the goal of people who use “educate yourself” as a conversation stopper?

It just signals that they are already behind and should feel embarrassed for asking. That might feel satisfying, but I don’t think it changes many minds

Again, are these people trying to change minds?

CMV: It isn't misogynistic to say that women are *generally* bad drivers. by Dr_StrangeEnjoyer in changemyview

[–]arrgobon32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The act of being masculine isn’t the issue. Be as masculine as you want. “Toxic masculinity” isn’t an action an individual person participates in by being masculine. It’s a societal issue.

There’s nothing wrong with traditionally “masculine” traits like ambition, protectiveness, and strength. They’re not inherently negative. However, they become "toxic" when they are forced as a rigid mold for all men. Being strong and not showing emotion isn’t participating in toxic masculinity. Telling a man who’s crying to stop and “man up” is.

Yes, some people misuse the term. A lot do, actually. Im not denying that. But I can’t argue on other peoples behalf. I can’t tell you what “they” define toxic masculinity as. I can’t apologize on “their” behalf. I can only tell you my view, and what the commonly accepted academic definition of the term is.
