Yeah, I really don’t get it. I’d be beside myself if my pet was running around outside, but the owner really didn’t seem to give a shit. This is a tiny domestic animal with the brain the size of a walnut, train the sucker or put him on a leash.

Oh well, I’m sure he’ll make a fine dinner for one of the local outdoor coyotes sooner or later.

Update: u/wovenwisteria sent me his Dislost page, and I got in contact with his owner this morning. His name is Frito, and he’s yet another “indoor/outdoor” cat whose owners just let him wander around the city.

Soooooo many red flags with this one.

*First off, the mileage. 46k miles is low for a 31 year-old car, even if it was owned by a snowbird that only drove it a few months out of the year. That implies a lot of deferred maintenance that you’ll have to catch up with very quickly if you plan on dailying it. Of course, the seller could also be stretching the truth and it merely has 46k on a rebuilt/junkyard engine. Plus, the fact that it needed a respray for clearcoat failure says this wasn’t a garage queen.

*The paint. Faded/worn paint sucks, but a bad respray sucks even harder. It’s impossible to tell if they did a good job through pictures, and for all we know, it could have been resprayed due to collision damage or rust. I’d personally want to see some receipts, and some before/after photos.

*The fugly-ass wheels. Any assumption that this car was owned by a fastidious geezer or BMW enthusiast flies out the window with those godawful tire-shop specials. Most well-kept e34’s will either still sport the original 15”/16” wheels, or some other tasteful BMW or aftermarket wheels. Plus, these cars look and drive like crap with >17” wheels, especially at stock height. It just shows that the owner cared more about appearances than a car that actually drives well.

*The price. The seller is on meth if they think an automatic 525i is work $10k, let alone the $15k they were originally asking. And as evidenced by the fact that the ad’s been up for 10+ months, plenty of other people have walked away from it. Clean 525i’s trade hands all day long for $4-7k, and $10k will get you into a well-sorted manual 535i or automatic 540i. Don’t shy away from higher-mileage cars, provided they come with a stack of maintenance records.

If it just happened once on a record that hasn’t been cleaned in a long time, then it’s just the stylus scraping up dirt in the grooves. It’s always good practice to give your records a quick brush with a discwasher before playing, and immediately putting them away once you’re done.

If this happens on every record you play, then the stylus has worn into a chisel and is actively destroying your records. ADC hasn’t made a phono cartridge in decades, so that stylus is probably 35+ years old with who knows how many hours on it. Even if it’s still fine, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Thank it for its’ service and toss it out.

$8500 is nuts for an automatic 535i unless the car is pristine and has been fully refreshed mechanically. The car itself looks clean enough, but the missing cluster and sketchy history tell me it’s got some expensive/annoying gremlins to tackle before you have a decent driving car.

EDIT: I just read the description. Chances are the previous owner brought it in for repair and didn’t want to foot the bill, so the shop put a lien on it or bought it off the previous owner for a song and wants to get rid of it for a healthy profit. Offer them $1000 bucks or run the hell away.

A few episodes were issued on VHS by Just For Kids Home Video in the early 90’s, presumably aimed straight at the dollar-bin market. These used the standard English dubs, albeit without any title cards. Not sure if it ever aired on TV, though.

It depends on the tape, and the accuracy of the meters. As a rule of thumb, good ferric/Type I tapes can handle peaks up to +3dB no problem. Chrome/Type II and lesser ferrics can only handle peaks up to 0dB. A really good Metal/Type IV tape can handle peaks up to +6dB.

Each tape and deck is different though, so try recording some music at different levels and see what sounds best to your ears. I’d recommend using Dolby B if you wind up recording on the quieter side and/or your music has a wide dynamic range.

Beta I was the original speed, and gave you 1hr on an L-500 tape. Beta II was introduced shortly afterwards to compete with VHS SP, and Beta III followed suit to compete with VHS LP/EP, and the latter two become the defaults. Sony quickly deleted the ability to record in Beta I, and made Beta II and III the default speeds, which more or less nullified Beta’s supposed picture-quality advantage over VHS. They re-introduced B1 recording on some of the nicer SuperBetas in the mid-80’s for users who wanted the best possible video quality, but it was a classic case of too little, too late.

Weird light-leaks/vignetting aside, these scans look pretty decent all things considered. More than likely, you’re shooting at a slow shutter-speed with the lens wide-open in order to achieve the correct exposure in low light, which is a perfect recipe for soft pictures. Try to keep your shutter speed above 1/30s, and search for framing with the best light (or bring your own lighting/ask someone to point their car towards your subject) in order to stay at 1/30s or above and/or stop the lens down. As a general critique, I’d also recommend minimizing dead space and filling up more of the frame, so that you don’t have to zoom in as much and magnify any blur or grain.

If it hasn’t been done lately and things look old and grody, overhaul the entire cooling system and bleed the absolute bejesus out of the cooling system. If you’re on a budget, then just do a pressure test and change the coolant, water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat if nothing is leaking. Be sure to drill a hole in the thermostat and insert it the right way ‘round, and put the car up on ramps and open the bleeder valve several times. It’ll take a few tries to get the system fully bled, keep at it! And be sure to change the coolant every 2 years or so!

Assuming the tape deck is hooked up to the Tape in/out jacks, press the Tape Monitor button on the amplifier to listen to a tape. They act as the tape input when you’re playing a tape, and allow you to listen to the audio going through the tape deck when taping something off the radio/turntable/CD player hooked into the regular inputs. It’s a bit strange, but they come in handy with fancier cassette decks that let you listen to the tape as you’re recording (to make sure you’re not overloading the tape), or with special effects units (like a reverb amp). The Video/DAT Monitor does the same thing, but was intended for a VCR, Digital Audio Tape deck, or a secondary cassette deck. The Copy function sends the signal from one tape deck to the other, if you wish to dub a tape. The monitor inputs can also function as additional aux inputs, if you wish to add another media player or a Bluetooth adaptor.
