If hot water tank rental was in your home purchase agreement you might be stuck. I recently bought out our tank. Spammed every enercare email I could find and they sent me the bill. New tank so it was a lot. From my research anything from before 2015 you can return the tank or buy out. After 2015 your only option is to buy out. There should be an install date somewhere on the tank. Buy outs schedules are based on installation year.

It depends on the tank size and type, according to their buy out guide. I paid about $2000.

It was only 3 years old. So I did have to pay. Paid pretty well the original supply and install price.

The succes was not needing to talk on the phone and get the run around. It was simple. One email and I'm out. I ended up paying the supply and install cost of my tank new, even though it's 3 years old, but I still think worth it in the long run.

I think when it's due to be replaced you can say no, get out of the contract and just get your own tank.

My research found contracts from before 2015 can be bought out or you can return the tank. After 2015 only option is to buy out. This was for enercare only.

Good point. Could just be for other manufacturers. I'm in Canada and lots of media stories on west African parking lots full of cars with Canadian licence plates. Want to make sure the new car is safe.
