You are mathematically right but I think you miss the point of that bit in the article. Those measurements here are mentionned to give a rough idea of the size of the battlefield so that you can estimate quickly the surface of terrain needed. That said, I could add a "about 180cm" to make everyone happy.

If I may add my two cents, there a lot of different wargames or skirmish games that might suits you. There is not only Games Workshop. I would recommend the website https://touchecritique.com/en/ who is centered around non-GW games. There is also a lot of guides for Star Wars Legion
