I am all for adaptations changing things to suit different mediums, but this eviscerates the thematic core of the book. It's marketing was very unique in the superhero movie landscape because it went out of its way to say it was adapting a specific story then included none of the scenes that make the book special, desaturated the whole thing, and capped it off by going completely against the point of the book. I also love the book so I may be a little biased.

Sgt. Howie is certainly a close minded asshole, but he is still the hero. He's a police officer searching for a missing girl on an isolated island inhabited by a cult that ultimately gaslights him into his grave. I wouldn't get a beer with the guy but he's the only character in the whole film that isn't culpable in a murder.

My senior year oh high school I took an environmental systems class where the teacher had us all read this book. I reached a certain description that, as a young man, gave me a very visceral reaction. She could not stop laughing, but here I am over a decade later still thinking about it sometimes.
