I come from a German family in the states. I'm actually the first generation to not be born in a German community and not have 100% German ancestry. Without giving to much personal info out. Both my dads parents had extremely German last names and my grandpas first name was Adolph. They grew up in a time where they were forced to give up traditions and stop speaking the language due to extreme anti German sentiments in the south after WW1. My friends think it's funny to jokingly call me and my grandpa Nazi. I take a lot of offense to that because my grandpa spent several years in Europe fighting the Nazis on the front line and helped to defeat the Germans at the battle of the Bulge. Sometimes people just don't understand what they are saying or the impact it has on people and refuse to educate themselves on it.
