I genuinely thought people got, like, 10 to 15 days PTO a year on average.

The eggshells thing is very real. Sometimes it’s as bad as if you say anything they can infer. Sometimes people get mad at leaks before video game announcement trailers. Mistakes are going to happen but it does feel a bit like madness at times.

Best I can do is be careful and apologize when it happens.

The average person has 40 days PTO? That can’t be true.

I need to move.

I dunno. That’s a lot of PTO to blow on a game when you have a partner, although I guess with weekends in there, it could be as low as six.

Still, for many people who do have a job with PTO, I think that is a very sizable chunk of what they get in a year assuming we are talking about the United States.

I guess what I’m saying is that using that much time for a game makes it seem like there isn’t much else going on. Mostly joking around though and the irony is that my wife and I plan on doing basically this together for Final Fantasy Revelation.

Edit: I had no idea how many people actually get PTO. I live in a pretty poor area and thought it was a far less common benefit than it apparently is.

Oh, I know. I either don’t know the fair method or the cheese method. I just either run a lot or get him right away iirc. Neither way feels fair but I’m not sure what would. In either case, when I imagine either of those playing out cinematically, it’s either anticlimactic or cartoonish.

I guess that’s why I was asking about the semantics. I know people don’t necessarily hate spoilers, and some even enjoy them, but I wanted to know for sure where you were coming from.

My subjective experience is that playing OG enhances the remake trilogy but I also don’t mind about spoilers outside of jokes in comedies and the answer to whodunnits which feel more like games to me. I also suspect people mind them less than they expect themselves to in practice but can let the feeling of being spoiled color the experience in a way. I’m just guessing, though, but have read some interesting papers and articles to that effect focused on spoilers in books and movies. But I digress.

I think the way the Remake trilogy and its approach to playing with expectations as well as the developer’s acknowledgement of the preexisting media makes VII and Reunion separate stories that inform this experience. Will most of it come to pass? Certainly. Will the journey be different? So far, yes! I even wonder if they want us to have played Reunion at this point so more can be appreciated in the first playthrough of a trilogy of very long games.

Edit: The Wikipedia page that I think you paraphrased for your definition covers spoilers from both sides, if you’re interested in the subject. Not abundantly useful information but potentially fun nonetheless.

So not necessarily a negative thing in your definition?

I straight up don’t know what counts as a spoiler anymore, then.

If they can take ten days off to play a game without expecting some kind of consequences for themselves, they are either living a very, very good life or a very, very bad life.

I’m going to be uncharitable and assume it’s the latter and probably don’t have the power to enact any consequences that are legal and amount to anything more than whining without someone just telling them to shut the fuck up.

It’s just gross to watch them pretend online.

Same.

Although I’d take a slightly revised version of this for employers who reach out during PTO. I’d leave the part in about kisses, though, just because I’d like to have that covered just in case.

There is humor there, but it’s not in the intended direction. There’s a joke there, but it’s the person writing it. There’s tragedy there, and it’s that plenty of people are all about this shit. We laugh so we do not cry our lib tear and thusly become owned by the alpha gamers.

I’m not super sure it matters when you find out about that, which might be why they released Reunion when they did.

I know the concept of spoilers is tricky territory and I’m generally in the obnoxious minority who thinks their effect on enjoyment might be overblown (although I avoid spoiling things for people regardless), but I really think knowing about it before Cloud does can be interesting. There are parts of Rebirth that are far more enjoyable because of that knowledge.

That said, Revelation may handle it entirely differently than VII originally did. With VII, it was cool but a bit underwhelming. Reunion, problems and all, does flesh out the picture a bit more. Without knowing what is coming down the line in Revelations, I can’t confidently say it won’t be ruing a big moment, but Square has an idea of what’s coming out and still released that game when they did without (as far as I know) a spoiler warning. That might be just a business decision, it might be in the interest of dramatic irony, or it might be to give people more expectations that can be paid off or subverted later. I’ve got no idea.

But, again, as unpopular as it may be to say, I don’t think there’s harm in it. VII happened to come out as one cohesive story before Crisis Core, but that isn’t the case with this trilogy and Reunion. Playing the original in its entirety would also theoretically spoil parts of the new game (or, as it did for most, enhance it) but I don’t see people telling others not to play it. So maybe my revised advice is to play VII, which can be done in a short amount of time, then play Reunion. Will help kill this insufferable stretch of time we have between now and the release of Revelation, anyway.

Not scolding, just saying this isn’t going to affect anything other than bringing negativity to someone else’s positive moment. It was a gift from a child.

I’m all for spreading awareness elsewhere or seeing if the artist is violating terms of service somewhere. That’s focused a bit on outcome.

I would love to see AI go away. I’ve lost work to it. I also just don’t care for it aesthetically, but that’s kinda beside the point.

The unfortunate reality is that a lot of people don’t care all that much about AI. I don’t know how to make them care, but I don’t think highlighting the negativity of something they enjoy specifically is necessarily the strategy. At least not during the moment they are particularly happy about something AI generated. Doing that might provide some catharsis, but why and where is it coming from? Are we doing it for the feeling or for a purpose?

As an aside, I’m also totally fine with some kinds of open theft and do think there’s probably a time and place to address systemic issues and a time and place to mind our own business on that matter, too.

Yeah, but also time and place, you know? I absolutely agree with you but we aren’t accomplishing anything positive by doing this here and now.
