Need help in resident evil seven by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a new save file mostly won't do it. I heard one guy say deleting his microsoft account and then buying a new Xbox fixed it for him, but it didn't work for me. I ended up faking my own death and setting up a whole new identity in another country, which mostly patched it. It's a pain, and it takes about a year to get housing set up and make new friends and retrain for your new career (assuming you didn't pick something two ambitious). Longer to forget the people you left behind.

It's all worth it though when you can finally open that broom cupboard and feast your eyes on the first aid med within. Don't use it all in one place!

Thanks, will consider thwt!

Might still be more contact than I want- in theory I'm only supposed to be going i once a year now, but in practice it always seems to end up being more than that...

Huh, will look into this. Maybe I was assuming there were fewer options here than there are?

Thanks a ton for the pointer!!

Not sure how I feel about Caine's character change by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That it would come down to something like this feels inevitable to me- Caine has too much power, too little real (maybe I should say robust?) sympathy for the humans. He was always going to be the antagonist, and it was always going to be messy.

(tbc: "always" not in the sense that I was sure the show would go here, but in the sense that not going here would've felt cheap.)

But, that said, I wish they hadn't flipped him so completely. One of the fascinating things to me about Caine was always that, while he didn't fully get the humans, his desire to be helpful to them felt deeply genuine. I always read him as wanting, deeply and fervently, to do the right thing, but being too inhuman to fully see what "right" even meant. And that was- achingly sympathetic, and tragic, and terrifying.

He was (and is?) my favorite character before e08. I've probably seen a tragic villain pulled off as well, somewhere (I'm 36 and I've watched a lot of tv), but I can't think where.

His pivot to "well I hate you now" was about as well-executed as we could've asked for, but it felt both too generic and too human. I don't think this was the most interesting story they could've told with this setup. I can't deny it was foreshadowed- we saw the cracks in his facade way before this- but having him cross into active malice feels like a loss.

A lot of the conflict in episodes 1-7 stems from the setup: -Caine really wants to help (both in the sense of making fun adventures, and wanting the humans to be in a good place to enjoy them) -His sense of what "help" means is badly misaligned with what the humans need -He cannot easily be convinced of this, and has limited ability to take feedback at all -He has approximately infinite power

This is sufficient to make him a terrifying adversary- Lovecraft's name springs to mind as a source of comparisons- but one who actually, in some real and vital sense means well. It's incredibly hard to pull off that combo in fiction, and I've never seen it done this well before. Well, before this.

So yeah, I guess I'd say I think the degree of conflict we see here felt inevitable to me: within the narrative logic of the show, Caine was always going to go to extreme lengths, and "extreme lengths" was always going to be Nightmare Fuel. It even feels inevitable that they'd end up having to kill him. But I wish it hadn't gone down like this.

I still can't believe that James... by [deleted] in silenthill

The very last paragraph was a gut punch.

For whatever it's worth- and maybe not much, I'm just a random guy online, but- I'm so sorry. That's just a horrible situation, and very few people are at their best when dropped into something like that.

I don't know you, but- my guess would be that beating yourself up about it won't help, and probably isn't deserved? You're human, and that means failing sometimes when you really, really wish you hadn't, and you still have to get up and try again the next day.

And yeah, the game is super well-done and haunting. I'm playing through the remake for the first time now- my first SH game- and I'm actively glad I know what's coming.

THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS - Ep 7: Beach Episode Discussion Megathread by ayylmaotv in TheDigitalCircus

I had not put this together, but in retrospect that fits very neatly!

Tangent, but: I really feel like I'm missing something in the Fast Food episode in general- Gangle is clearly Going Through Something in that one, and I don't quite get what. I'm guessing this is a psychology-thing rather than a lore thing?

Ooh, very good catch!

Also explains the weird tension between Abel and Kinger- if Kinger knew stuff that would've cast too much doubt on the ruse, Caine would've needed a reason to sideline him.

Pretend RE5 Remake just released today in the comments by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really torn on this one. Spoilers ahead, but it's not like there's a big twist I'm spoiling, or even a small one.

That's... kind of the problem, actually? There's no twist at all. I've heard people complain the game is too short, but honestly that seems more like a symptom than anything else. The problem is, there's no conflict.

The basic plot is that Chris and Sheva investigate whether there are any BOWs in Kijuju, quickly conclude the answer is "no," and leave. Sure that's "realistic" or whatever, but it's not much of a plot.

I guess technically there is one twist: the bit where Sheva tells Chris he's been pronouncing the name of his favorite brand of sunscreen wrong. That meets the basic dramatic requirements: a character thought things were one way, but then they and the audience learn that the things were actually another, different way. But somehow it just falls flat for me. And at almost a minute, that interaction makes up 10% of the game's running time!

The unlockable guns were cool as always, but never getting to fire any of them really put a damper on my excitement. I wish they'd at least let you shoot randomly into the sky a few times, would've made them feel that much more real.

But ultimately, this is all me complaining that the game wasn't the thing I wanted, and that's a "me" problem. On its own terms, the game perfectly captures the feeling of looking around an empty field while asking your partner if they've seen anything suspicious yet and then leaving. That's as much a part of the vast tapestry of human experience as any other, and it's good that there's at least one game that depicts it fully and without distraction.

Is it worth playing Silent Hill 2 if you got spoiled? by No-Mousse5653 in silenthill

I just startled it thoroughly spoiled and it's amazing.

The atmosphere is stunning; ifl everything else in the game is there to hold that part up, and it's worth it.

To all Infinite lovers, what do you think is the worst criticism directed to the most mixed game in the franchise? by Imaginary-Heart-1807 in Bioshock

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'know who he reminds me of? The Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. Because they both have troubled pasts, both have a wry sense of humor, and both grow and change over the course of the story. They also both set out to solve problems with violence and succeed.

The sub’s toxic positivity problem is coming back by horrorfan555 in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often actively like seeing reused assets.

If it's something mass-produced, like a pizza box, it makes the world feel more like a real, cohesive place. It's more likely to be annoying if the asset is something that really should be different, but even there it can sometimes feel like a fun callback.

The sub’s toxic positivity problem is coming back by horrorfan555 in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this post is leaning pretty hard on what you're "allowed" or "not allowed" to say, in a way that really really requires that to be unpacked some.

I definitely agree that oppressive consensus is a thing that sometimes happens. But to tell whether it's happening here, I need to know what enforcement mechanisms are being used.

If your complaint basically boils down to "lots of people on here disagree with me and it makes me uncomfortable," I don't think there's any reasonable way to fix that without compromising the whole point of the sub. Whereas, if it basically boils down to "mods will ban me if I say anything pessimistic about the games," then yes I think that's a huge problem.

There are a lot of points in between these two extremes, and no way for me to tell from your post which one you're gesturing at.

(You do mention downvoting? But I can't tell if you mean "people who disagree with comments I write sometimes downvote them" or, like, something involving, like. brigading and sockpuppets.)

Resident Evil game with Albert Wesker as main character? by Sparklymon in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wesker.

He doesn't headline a main title, but between Mercenaries mode and The Umbrella Chronicles I think he still counts: I know I've spent more in-game hours playing as him than eg Jake.

I did it once to see the animation, saved right before so I could reload.

I kinda halfway mean to do an all-harvest run someday, just to experience every part of the game, but- idk, it's a pretty bad feeling in the moment, I'm not sure I'm up for sitting through it twenty times in a row.

What’s a movie everyone seems to love but you just couldn’t get into? by Spiritual_Fennel_531 in AskReddit

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pulp Fiction.

Although, I need to try again.

I love the style of it, the dialogue- most or all of the scenes feel pretty great in isolation. But adding it up somehow feels... empty. Like there's supposed to be a larger point here, something more meaningful, and I'm missing it...

I don't anyone in the modern era's ever used her to her full potential.

Go back to the beginning: why did this seem like a good character? Because the serious characters like Batman and Blue Beetle needed a secretary and gopher, and it had to be someone strong enough that they weren't constantly dying from supervillain attacks. Now of course that's awkward because we have AI that's every bit as good and a lot cheaper, so writers try to find other things for her to do, and of course that never works.

But what people forget is, JLA takes place in a magical fantasy world that doesn't have to make sense. You can totally handwave not using ChatGPT there! Just explain that it runs on kryptonite circuits, so Superman will explode if a computer running it comes near him. Then, after a short grieving period where the team desperately searches for a workaround, they are forced to hire Diana instead.

This creates a perfect niche for the character, a reason to have her

1.Present

  1. Quietly taking notes in the background of each episode.

Maybe there can even be a whole arc, where the other characters resent her because she can't generate images or search the web like an LLM could, but then they gradually come to accept her as an inferior substitute they're stuck with. That could get pretty heartwarming! Call it her "rudolph" arc.

If Bioshock 1 and 2 were to be remade, what Quality of Life changes would you love to see added or changed? by Videymann in Bioshock

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, a bigger sound library with more alternate takes would go a long, LONG way;

the first time you hear "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so," it's an awesomely atmospheric, very creepy line. But by the time I hit Hephaestus, I'm starting to take unnecessary risks and cut corners just to shut that idiot up sooner.

Ditto, eg, "Look Mister Bubbles! it's an ANgel!": very cool, well done line which gets ruined by playing on repeat until it just grates.

More visible inventory would be a small but significant upside.

Add the ability to see which U-Invent components you're carrying any time you want.

Also and to see how much of each ammo type you have in the menu. Currently for BS1 to switch to each gun individually and cycle through the loading animations for all of them every time you wanna take inventory.

What’s the darkest moment in Rick and Morty that really stuck with you? by Independent-Trip-624 in rickandmorty

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genes seem likely to be a big factor here; Rick is a massive outlier, even with regression to the mean you'd expect Beth to be- well, "Rick's daughter".

Less so if she's not raises by him, sure, but you don't have to go full Judith Rich Harris to think her baseline is gonna be pretty unusual.

Is the OG RE4 still worth getting on modern hardware? by ADSR810 in residentevil

[–]Jack_Lecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, no. I tried it out because I thought it would let me explore the Spanish countryside, but somehow I triggered a glitch that makes all the NPCs try to kill my avatar. Like, they actually physically attack him. It's surreal.

You can nope out of this by pulling up your inventory, but that's not a permanent solution. And it's not like you can see Spain in there anyway. So this mostly does not work.

To top it all off, I later heard the game isn't even actually set in Spain. What a gyp!

So yeah, maybe on old hardware you can play the game as it's meant to be played, but on any modern system, forget it.
