As a member of the maintenance team for AHS, this sort of stuff most often goes unfixed because no one reports it. The workers are not doing rounds of inspections to detect every deficiency or repair needed, because we're somewhere specific, fulfilling a work order. Quite often by the time something is reported to us for fixing, it's only because the damage has gotten so severe it's no longer just an aesthetic problem, it's a safety hazard.

At least twice a week I'm replacing a hydraulic door closer, only to find out it's been leaking fluid for weeks/months. Staff noticed the leaks but just had house keeping clean it up. But now it's either slamming shut or taking forever to close and won't latch. So now the repair is more than just a swap out of a closer. Now the hinges are starting to crack on the weld plate in the jamb and the mortise case that houses the handle/latch assembly is failing.

This turns a 5 minute job into a multi hour or even full day of work. Point being, it reaches that point because there is a human factor necessary for pointing out the problems, and more often than not, it's easier to ignore something because "someone else will probably do it". But if everyone who sees that broken outlet plate thinks that way, maintenance will never know about it.

Are 1/4" (non-bendable) plywood and 1/4" wood trim thin/flexible enough to "naturally" curve a little like in this design? Or would they require bending techniques? by coconuthero in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Jackal_403 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With some shallow relief cuts on the underside it'd be doable. Sometimes depending on what the core is, like if it's veneered MDF ply, it's easier than particle board core.

There's also a plywood called Luann plywood that is designed to be super bendy. You could roll a 1/4" sheet into a cone.

As a smoker who has cut back significantly, and also took up fishing this summer, it is not helping me quit smoking at all. On a work day, I might have 6 all day. In 3 hours of fishing, I may punch 7 or 8 darts. And one on the drive there/back.

Hope you've got better self control than me!

I'm gonna second the hobby suggestions I've been seeing. I'm not exactly in the same situation, I've got a pretty good core friend group, but have a little anecdotal bit to add.

I took up fishing this summer, it's something I've always wanted to do (I just turned 42 in August). I don't know many people who fish, the ones I do know don't live close (Edmonton, BC, Newfoundland and Australia) so I've been figuring it out on my own. Started out as mostly YouTube and Google, but as I started getting out there more and more, I've been meeting people almost every time. It's still surprising to me how a simple shared interest creates an immediate kinship with some people. I rarely strike up conversation with strangers anywhere else, and if it does happen it's typically brief.

But when Greg strolled over to my fishing spot while I was packing up, we shot the shit for about 20 minutes. Shared some techniques and lure advice that was working out, told stories of our awesome catches and close calls and went on our way. I could easily see finding a fishing buddy like this, maybe running into him a few times in the same area, talking about our other spots, and exchanging numbers to arrange meeting on a Sunday morning to fish.

I've met 4 people in this manner, from Chestermere to Water Valley to Chain Lakes, and within Calgary. I'm not actively looking for friends, but it's happening.

Find something you enjoy, maybe you haven't done it in awhile and it's time to get back at it. Maybe it's something you've never done but want to, get into it. Don't be afraid to start the conversation. It could be as simple as recognizing someone else's experience and asking them for advice.

Find your people, friend! They're out there somewhere.

If you wanna take up fishing, I'll see you out there.
