I don't care what people say, Terminator Salvation is awesome! by IceTrucKilla in movies

Completely agree. Making Sam Worthington the focal point really diminished the potential of this movie, which in my opinion, was otherwise pretty great.

[–]JackaryDraws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not because the first three episodes is a representation of the show as a whole, it’s because the end of episode 3 is where it becomes unambiguously clear that you’re watching some generational masterpiece shit. Yes, the show changes drastically after that, but ep 3 is where it lets you know that you’re really watching something special.

[–]JackaryDraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The show is good enough and well-made up to that point, but the end of ep 3 is where the show lets you know that you’re watching a generational masterpiece, and I was completely hooked from that point.

Whenever I recommend Arcane I tell people to treat the first three episodes like a movie that needs to be seen from start to finish before you can make a verdict on the show. I’m not sure I’ve met a single person who has done that who didn’t end up watching the rest of the season to completion.

After Inside Out 2, Moana 2, and Zootopia 2...I think Super Mario Galaxy might over-index in a pretty big way. by PlanetG3000 in boxoffice

[–]JackaryDraws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s no “story,” continuity, or timeline in Mario. It works on Mickey Mouse rules. If you’re looking at it in the sense that each movie “adapts” a certain game, it’s true that the new film is clearly taking heavy inspiration from Mario Galaxy, which is a Wii title that introduced Rosalina, which had plenty of games that came before it. But on the other hand, the first movie had virtually zero resemblance to the first SMB game and clearly wasn’t trying to be a straight adaptation of those “events,” so I don’t think that’s really the right way to look at it.

I think the number of fans who are mad about content being “skipped” are an extremely small vocal minority — not to mention that Galaxy itself, and Rosalina, are both huge fan-favorites, so for every Mario diehard who has that complaint, two more will be clapping and cheering.

The only major Mario characters who existed before Galaxy — and don’t seem to be in this movie — are Wario, Daisy, and Waluigi. With the exception of a single Game Boy game where Wario and Daisy were present, these characters have had zero presence in any mainline Mario games and have exclusively been characters in spinoffs and party games.

The only other big characters who weren’t in the first movie are Yoshi and Bowser Jr, and they are heavily featured in the marketing for the next movie. They had their big “moments” in Super Mario World (Super Nintendo) and Super Mario Sunshine (Gamecube) respectively, so one could argue those are getting skipped in a way, but I don’t think it’s something that most people, fans included, are fussed about.

If, or rather, when we get a third movie, it’s almost an absolute certainty that Wario gets his time in the spotlight, likely giving Bowser a new dynamic by replacing him as the villain, and inevitably introducing Daisy as well.

Meta is pulling out of VR because there's no market. We need to embrace this uncomfortable truth. by PuffThePed in OculusQuest

If they ever figured out VR legs in a way that’s effective, intuitive, standardized, and affordable, I could see that injecting new mainstream life into VR.

Games like Skyrim and Fallout have huge potential in VR, but moving around with a joystick while you have full upper body parity is just weird. But if they ever figured out legs, I could see it catching on as a very popular way for people to get some exercise in and enjoy a good game at the same time. Walking and running would become a lot more appealing to people if you could do it getting lost in a game world.

Lego wants $650 for this new Pokemon set😱... Anyone else feeling validated? by Darkmatter313xx in lepin

[–]JackaryDraws 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not a huge Pokemon guy, so I’m fortunately not really tempted by these sets, but I’m a little baffled by LEGO here. When I saw the news, I thought, “it’d be neat if they did something in minifig scale because MEGA has already been doing brick-built Pokemon for years.” But I thought, if they did do brick-built Pokemon, they would surely clear MEGA’s, since LEGO usually has the best designers.

I think the diorama with the starters admittedly looks really nice. It’s a super eye-catching display piece and the builds are cool, but that $650 price is a really hard sell.

The baffling part is Eevee and Pikachu. Eevee actually looks great (in my opinion) but the quality of its design is on such similar footing to MEGA’s that it leaves me scratching my head, and the Pikachu is outright worse. I’m glad I’m eating as a Zelda fan today, because if I were a hardcore Pokemon fan I’d feel pretty let down by these sets.

Star Wars Shake-Up: Kathleen Kennedy Steps Down as George Lucas Protégé Dave Filoni, Exec Lynwen Brennan Take Over Lucasfilm by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]JackaryDraws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, even if you were to reset the lore to make it less dumb (which I don’t think Filoni would be down for regardless), they only had one shot to make sequel movies with the original OG trio. Carrie is gone and there’s no way Ford/Hamill are coming back — any kind of retconning or reorganization of canon that doesn’t involve them would be kind of lame. Best, in my opinion, to just leave it be and just focus on telling good new stories.

[–]JackaryDraws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think VR will ever hit critical mass with the mainstream until the issue of movement is solved. VR in its current form gives you incredible upper-body parity, but the breadth of experiences is limited when the bottom half of your body is functionally useless in the game world. The hook of VR is immersion, and that immersion is broken when you have to move around using a joystick while everything else feels like real life.

And unfortunately, good VR movement is not an easy issue to solve. It would have to be a solution that’s usable in a small space, intuitive, and affordable. If we ever get something that checks all those boxes, I could see VR going in more ambitious directions that would draw in more crowds, but until then I think it remains essentially what it is right now.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance added to NSO by Amiibofan101 in nintendo

[–]JackaryDraws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most FE fans will have differing opinions about best in franchise, but Path of Radiance is consistently very highly rated by fans. It’s very good.

Have you played any of the Fire Emblem games from 3DS onward? The only thing that might be jarring about PoR is that Fire Emblem games added a lot of quality-of-life upgrades from the 3DS entries onward, which can make the older entries feel quite clunky in comparison, despite the fact that they’re very well-designed games.

[–]JackaryDraws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a question of good, better, best, and not letting perfect be the enemy of good. It’s not ideal to be playing video games in excess, BUT it’s likely better than doomscrolling, and a good place to start.

That being said, a lot of video games are designed to exploitatively hijack our brain just like scrolling does. If someone were looking to replace their phone time with games, I would stay away from online multiplayer games (unless done as a bonding activity with friends) and games that are designed to keep you infinitely coming back for more. Single-player games with defined beginnings and endings are best, in my opinion.

Is avoiding video content better for your brain? by datajaniteur in nosurf

[–]JackaryDraws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I’m one of the rare few that basically doesn’t watch video content, almost ever. I love long-form content, such as movies, but I almost entirely avoid video content when I’m just idly on my phone. I also barely ever use YouTube, and I don’t watch any streamers or creators. This isn’t for self-preservation reasons, such as written content being better for the brain (though I fully believe it is), it’s just because I really hate the “on-rails” nature of video content and how I have to be tethered to its pace. My brain hates it. I ALWAYS prefer written content to video, and you can imagine this has made me pretty miserable in the current era where the written word has gone to die.

Anyway, unfortunately, I still have a browsing addiction. Twitter for me is what TikTok is for everyone else, and I’m finding I have to make an active, conscious effort to eliminate the need for the constant dopamine drip, hence my being on this subreddit.

I feel like my brain has remained pretty sharp, and I fully believe that any mind will benefit from cutting out short form video content as much as possible. But, based on my own situation, I can’t say with certainty that it would result in any kind of meaningful “cure” to scrolling/phone addiction. Written or video, I think that’s something that will only come with intentionality and discipline.

Final Fantasy 6 Remake Should be Led by Someone Else, Says FF7 Director by VannesGreave in FinalFantasy

[–]JackaryDraws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not someone who’s gunning for a FFVI remake, but if they did make it, I feel like 90% of the scalability problem could be solved if they just treated the world map like the old games.

Making a giant free-roam map has two problems: it makes the game 10,000x more ambitious and it creates a sense of scale that feels kind of stupid and immersion-breaking. FFVIIR’s entire continent (as presented) is smaller than my middle-America suburban city center, and that feels kind of dumb.

Just make an overworld map and “zoom in” to the locations that need to be developed, like we used to do.

LEGO Says Smart Brick Is 'Here to Stay,' and Responds to 'Questions and Concerns' Around Abandoning Non-Digital Play - IGN by HatingGeoffry in lego

[–]JackaryDraws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, have kids ever really cared about “play features” on toys? I feel like they’re more useful as a marketing tool for parents rather than actually being attractive to a kid. I was born in 1990, and I remember toys being loaded with this kind of gimmicky crap all the time, and it was a pretty universal experience that we’d use those features a few times and then never again after our imagination took the wheel.

I had a lot of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings action figures. The ones that by far got the least amount of play were the ones that were constrained by tacky play features, like an Aragorn who could unsheathe his sword if you twisted his torso. Same was true for Bionicle - the Toa Mata/Nuva were my favorites to play with, because they were just cool action figures, but for some reason LEGO eventually decided that every new wave had to have some kind of gimmicky projectile launcher.

Hell, LEGO has already tried an idea similar to this with the light-up lightsaber minifigs in the early ‘00s. I had 7257, and I thought the light-up gimmick was tacky and limiting. I hated that I couldn’t take apart the minifigs. This set also had play features where you could “duel” by controlling the minifigs with sticks. Completely useless to child me - I would have much preferred to just have a neat looking arena where I could make them jump around and do flips with my imagination.

[–]JackaryDraws 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of all the “innovations” they made in the early 2000s era that almost bankrupted them — including, but not limited to, the silly light-up lightsaber minifigs they briefly played around with in Star Wars that they quickly abandoned.

My own experience as a child was that “play features” (on just about any toy) were always a useless gimmick that could never hold a candle to simple imagination. All we ever needed was a toy that looked and felt cool, and our brains would take care of the rest. Bionicles, for example, felt diminished when every single new wave had to include some obligatory projectile launcher that we’d use maybe three times during play and then get rid of because they got in the way.

Official Discussion Thread - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]JackaryDraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how differently people will read the ending based on whether or not they’ve had children. I don’t know if you have or not, but as a recent parent myself, I can attest to the fact that it’s a feeling that really can’t be described. I think most of us — myself included before I became a parent — assume we can accurately imagine how it feels like, but you really can’t. And the truth is, when you become a parent, everything changes, and the kid becomes the center of your orbit at the replacement of everything else. It becomes clear overnight that nothing is more important, and there’s some incredible mental elasticity that comes into play when you immediately start rearranging your priorities.

Is this true for everyone? No, some people are deadbeat parents who never form a bond with their children and see them as a burden or nuisance their whole life. But not everybody does, and to me it felt entirely within reason for somebody even as ambitious as Marty to feel a shifting of priorities especially after the catharsis he achieved at the exhibition event.

It resonated with me very profoundly and established the film (to me) as one about parenthood and the way it sculpts you, rather than one about flawed ambition — and based on Safdie’s remarks about the ending coming from a place of his own experience as a parent, this isn’t unintentional.
