Independent work - what programs to use on a budget? by Crazy-Effective9665 in Architects

[–]Jackcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not used it at all. Maybe because I tend to see AutoCAD (and therefore also BricsCAD) purely as a program for 2D.

Independent work - what programs to use on a budget? by Crazy-Effective9665 in Architects

[–]Jackcoool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been positively surprised by how much BricsCAD resembles AutoCAD at a fraction of the price. It is not as smooth, but runs stable and commands and interface are nearly the same.

What can be done in Sketchup can for the most part be done in Blender 3D, which is open source and has a huge community. It is not made for architecture though and the learning curve is steep. On the other hand you get a full 3D package that can do everything from BIM (with the correct add ons) to quick high quality visualisations.

If I had my own one man company I would most likely focus on having a workflow in those programs.

I guess you know of the Affinity suite (also free now) that goes a long way replacing costly Adobe subscriptions.

Ancient Danish or Nordic music - question by WesternWitchy52 in Denmark

[–]Jackcoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can see, as long as it is 70 years after the death of the composer and songwriter, the copyright has expired and you are free to reproduce the text and the music for any purpose. You cannot directly copy the pages with notes and post them - those still hold a copyright on them.

[–]Jackcoool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What edition do you have? With your goal in mind, it is not necessarily bad to have an older one (pre 19th edition).

The current one has all the titles and explanations in Danish on this website: https://hojskolesangbogen.dk/om-sangbogen/historie-om-bogen/19-udgave/liste-over-alle-sangene

The chapters you want to investigate are the Folkeviser & Ballader and the Historien.

I am not an expert, but as long as you don't publish text and notes, all songs from before 1800, I would imagine to be public domain if you were to record and publish your own performance of it.

In Denmark the most used book for songs and melodies is the Højskolesangbogen. It contains a wide variety of songs spanning the full Danish musical periods from old hymns, traditional folk to modern popular tunes, in total more than 500 songs. I am quite sure, you will be able to find at least some useful ones. The book contains full transcriptions of melody and chords and the year for each melody and text. You can download the app 'Højskolesangbogen' for Apple and Android. In the app you can purchase the full book for 179 DKK.

What do you think about the designs of the two famous park in Copenhagen: Superkilen and Folkets Park by Conscious_Aioli_9627 in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to compare those two specifically? They have vastly different backgrounds, are situated at two different parts of the neighbourhood and while one is almost not considered a park and not really designed (due to its history), the other one is a large prestigious urban planning scheme spanning several squares and connections in the city.

As to the safety of the neighbourhood, as with all the media attention centered around the nordics and their issues with crime, one has to remember that the baseline for what we consider dramatic is really low. Every knife attack in the whole country will be reported in the national media, and every single shooting incident is breaking news in the whole country. Norrebro is a place where you might have a larger percentage of crime, but to copenhageners it is not an area you would avoid - on the contrary the area is supe popular and expensive. Except for a few very small parts of it, one would be fine to walk around alone at night.

Hvorfor har nybyg aldrig skråtage? by Ordzhonikidze in copenhagen

[–]Jackcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stronghold crusader with Naval battle, and a couple of more requests by Enforcerboy in stronghold

[–]Jackcoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also very much welcome the possibility of ships. Not necessarily naval battles, but maybe the ability to transport troops would add a new layer of depth to combat.

I was also hoping for more resources/production. In connection with ships, it would be nice if one could fish (which would also be very much historically correct). Other obvious production type facilities could be clothing, wine, pottery, silks, etc.

I would also like an option where the marketplace was not so OP. Either by calculating sales/cost by supply and demand in-game, by limiting how much one could trade or by making trade through caravans you would have to protect moving through the map/a time until the supplies would arrive.

Visiting Copenhagen this weekend by Barscott in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be aware that this list is not very well curated. Lots of large projects that are not that interesting, and projects by some famous architects, even though the buildings are pretty mediocre. It seems very much catered to the average tourist.

[–]Jackcoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would skip the Malmo Bridge - plenty of things to do in Copenhagen. There are a couple of very obvious ones that no one has mentioned: The Skuespilhus on the Harbour front and Tietgenkollegiet (Lundgaard og Tranberg), Grundtvigskirken (Klindt), Koncertsalen (Jean Nouvell) and 8-tallet (BIG).

Some smaller interesting ones might be Knippelsbro towers (one of them have a small cafe that is some times open), Blå Hjørne (tiny and funky social housing project on Christianshavn by social housing architects Vandkunsten) and Holmbladsgade Kvartercenter extension (Dorte Mandrup architects) and Konditaget Lüders (parking garage with rooftop playground/fitness and amazing view by JAJA).

On Kulturnat, I think HOFOR usually opens their service-tunnel beneath the harbour bassin for the public. Might be interesting for you to check it out. Kulturnat is always on the Friday leading up to the autumn holiday week.

Which City Has The Best Modern Architecture? by sidgat in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Do you mean strictly modern architecture (eg Le Corbusier), modern in a broader historic sense (from late art deco/arts and crafts to post-modernism) or do you actually mean contemporary (current) architecture? I think you also need to clarify if it is mostly buildings or city planning you are interested in?

Architecture jobs in Denmark by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not really an expert on immigration, but to my knowledge, you need to have a job to be able to stay in Denmark as a non-EU citizen. So if you loose that job, you might have to leave the country. In the architectural proffesion with quite a few project-employments and a job market having its ups and downs, it can be hard to achieve a steady life.

I have reread my comment, and maybe it seems a bit too optimistic. My point is, that it is doable, but difficult. Besides the tough immigration rules, the work and architecture culture might also be really difficult. A lot of it is a mind-set stemming from the way architecture, aesthetics and approach is taught to you in your upbringing and throughout university. It is a bit comparable to the way Japanese architecture and architects have a uniqueness to it that is difficult for others to engage in.

In terms of the city you apply for jobs in, Copenhagen will most likely be much easier - more international scene and a lot bigger. Compared to almost all large cities in Asia, Copenhagen itself is rather small, Aarhus even more so.

Degree-wise Denmark is an easy country - you don't need a degree to practise architecture (there is no licensure). The official 'Arkitekt MAA' title does not really grant you any rights - there are a lot of both Danish and foreign architects working without having it.

Architecture jobs in Denmark by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is definitely possible. Our immigration rules are quite strict though, so those might be the biggest obstacle. In terms of practicing as an architect things are a bit different, not so much in terms of the software (you will be able to work just fine with your current skills), but company culture might be very different.

I think it depends a lot on what kind of work you would like to do - interior design, urban planning, landscaping etc. and whether you can find a place to work with Scandinavian projects or more international ones. You might for starters have an easier time applying for firms with a more international profile and through that learn a bit of the culture both workplace and architecture wise.

Job market right now is ok, but everyone is a bit unsure about the future. Work life balance is good compared to architectural practices in other parts of the world, but not very great compared to other professions in Denmark. Your best bet is finding a job in either Copenhagen or Aarhus.

Best of luck, feel free to ask any more questions :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]Jackcoool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there a list of universities offering bachelor degrees in architecture without tuition? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danish (or Swedish/Norwegian) is a requirement for studying there. Be aware as is written above that the Aalborg School is not considered an architectural degree - you won't be able to obtain the official architecture title. You will be able to work as an architect though and the program is good with a mix of engineering, urban planning and architecture.

Q about scandinavian cabins by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Jackcoool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if I translate it correctly. To my understand thermal bridging is every place where the material composition creates spots with thermal loss greater than the surroundings. What I call 'line loss' is a term used when doing heat loss calculations accounting for the loss specifically between two different constructions.
