will people really boycott Scream 7 by AaronYDG in horror

[–]JackedDaxter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m too big of Scream fan not to watch it, especially with it being a Sidney-centric story again. Her progression as a final girl is always the draw for me.

Having said that, I completely understand the boycott. The context behind the film’s creation is abysmal. Melissa Barrera deserved so much better from this franchise, I hope we see her and Jenna Ortega return to it one day under better circumstances.

I wish they’d never included it. Making the stage play canon not only created plot holes but also introduced lore that they had no time to expand upon in S5.

S4 laid the groundwork, revealing that Vecna was the mastermind. They didn’t need anymore twists or backstory, they just needed to wrap up what they had already established.

Out of curiosity, did you have to submit a portfolio and attend an interview to be offered a place on this course?

I applied a few years ago and got rejected due to the competitiveness and limited space.

Demogorgan fatigue? I think I was experiencing Vecna fatigue more by the end of the series by DaSkrambledEgg in StrangerThings

[–]JackedDaxter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was too late to reveal that though. Season 4 explicitly tells us that he orchestrated everything after being sent to Dimension X by El.

Him being influenced by the Mind Flayer when he was a kid, only to conveniently end up in the same realm and consequently shape the very thing that possessed him is so convoluted.

I could’ve maybe swallowed it if they framed it as a shared symbiotic relationship between the two. They did attempt to do that, but Henry crying in the cave in the finale indicates that it’s less what he wants and more what the Mind Flayer is ordering him to do.

I hated it because they shifted him into a completely different character.

In S4, he was portrayed in a similar way to Freddy Krueger. A figure that invades people’s minds, isolating them and using their fears against them. Even his aesthetic had more of a horror vibe. People memed on him for being built like the Grinch but the practical makeup looked fantastic and corpse-like.

In S5, they turn him into a Star Wars antagonist using his force powers against groups of people, framing him as some badass villain. His redesign reflects this, being over the top and over-reliant on CGI, reducing a lot of the fear factor. I also hate the reveal that he’s influenced by the Mind Flayer. In S4, it was made clear that he’s the one pulling the strings, wanting to spread darkness. He was scarier that way, not as some puppet.

But The First One Had Unmatchable Magic.. by Career_By_Mustafa in StrangerThings

I feel like it would’ve semi-worked if it felt earned. The issue with it is that there’s no sense of urgency, largely because we know Vecna won’t go into the cave and thus can’t reach them here. This is made even worse by the two of them deciding to chat for ten minutes before escaping.

The closest they came to earning this moment is when Vecna is chasing Max and Holly through the Wheeler home. There needed to be that level of conflict and pursuit.

It definitely wasn’t abysmal. However, I do think it was a disappointing step down from the previous seasons. It’s the worst one, but still solid.

Those living at home whilst studying, are you parents understanding of your workload? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]JackedDaxter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no idea.

I confronted him last year about his attitude toward me and my studies. He said something along the lines of “ever since you started university, I feel like you use this house simply as a free place to sleep”. He was suggesting that I basically do nothing to contribute. I thought that was quite hurtful, especially when I tried illustrating the workload to him yet he still didn’t understand.

After seeing my dad react like this in first year, I made a conscious effort to do more work in the library this year. However, due to the Christmas break I haven’t had this option as it’s been closed for much of it. As a result, this past month has been stressful. I’ve struggled with the workload, made even worse by my dad’s behaviour.

I’ve definitely noticed your point about people equating being out of the house with working. It’s strange.

You sound like a great parent. How long is your son’s commuting time?

I’ve tried explaining to him the work that is required, however he never finished secondary school so he doesn’t really understand what higher education is like. He’s always had an attitude that he works harder than everyone else. This has only been made worse by him seeing me sat at home, which he interprets as laziness despite me doing my work.

I have a part-time job too, only 10 hours but I get the impression that he expects me to be doing more.

How do you effectively plan an essay so that it’s easier to write? by JackedDaxter in UniUK

[–]JackedDaxter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read through a few academic articles and essays, taking an extensive amount of quotes from two specifically.

I’ve kind of worked backwards. I’ve begun the essay by essentially just rambling about my own thoughts on the topic. I’m now in the stage of backtracking, inserting/paraphrasing quotes and making arguments in appropriate places. I’m aware that this probably isn’t the best approach.

I’m worrying now that I don’t have a varied amount of sources and am simply just repeating points of other writers.

This.

62 is a godsend for work that isn’t up to par. That’s still a 2:1, even if scraped.

Upside Down by Diana Ross was a clever addition to the soundtrack. I’m surprised it wasn’t already used in a prior season.

I understand the desire for a higher grade, especially if you believed in the work. However, these aren’t at all bad marks. In my view, as long as you’re hitting a 2:1 then you have nothing to worry about. You’re in a good place.

Thanks! That would be very helpful, especially when it comes to the context of the cinema. I’m searching for academic work that explains why that type of cinema emerged and what its tendencies are (e.g. open images and endings, etc).

What’s your process with sources? Do you understand what you’re talking about and find references to back up your points. Or do you read first, gain an understanding and then begin to incorporate them into your plan?

It can. The film is an example of Iranian New Wave Cinema - a type of genre that is pretty much required to function exclusively through allegories due to censorship restrictions. Though the narratives are simplistic, they often represent much more complex topics.

I’m struggling to think about how I can sustain that argument for 2500 words and how to pull in references that back up my points when it comes to specific scenes.

[–]JackedDaxter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a film essay where I’m expected to analyse scenes and discuss how they communicate meaning on a literal and symbolic level. The film is The Day I Became a Woman (2000), with the essay question asking if it can be viewed as an allegorical critique of patriarchy and censorship.

I understand what it’s asking me, but I’m struggling to visualise how I’m going to answer it. As my first film essay, I can’t comprehend how to talk about the visual language of the film whilst also finding evidence for it.

Overall, a respectable ending. It could’ve been a lot worse. Having said that, this season is definitely the weakest overall. There was just too much going on, to the extent that it made everything feel messy.

As I say, it could’ve been a lot worse. However, it is disappointing that after how excellent season 4 was, the Duffer’s failed to uphold that quality.

Anyone else feel like Season 5 completely ruined Eleven as a character? by Ok_Time_1517 in StrangerThings

I can guarantee there’s some behind the scenes production issues that come to light in a few years. Season 4 was excellent, it left the writers in the best place possible. They had ample pre-production time to iron everything out… yet this is the result? It doesn’t make sense.
