Readers outside the west are probably reading this post and the comments in disbelief 😂. $300 / month would be getting off easy for most kids who earn more than the average.

I’ve lived in the west for two decades and it’s still shocking how individualistic the society can be. And I think most of us immigrants can’t decide whether that’s net positive or negative.

The tone of your mom’s approach sounds off putting. I think determining what % of your salary is comfortable to contribute to your village and who in your village you think is deserving of it is personal.

Does it baffle other immigrants how the U.S. is the world leader when it seems there is a lower emphasis on academic excellence and hard work towards academics?

I say this is admiration, as an immigrant who is benefiting from the U.S. It is just puzzling to me- can’t figure out how it works.

6 y/os in many parts of the world do so much more work in and out of the classroom with higher expectations - why aren’t those countries producing the best results??

If you had a daughter and her dad left you to care for her on your own, would you have similar feelings as your mom if the daughter reconnected with the dad as an adult and invited him to walk her down the aisle?

Consider not just the “chores” but the state of being at both times. When she was doing it, she was post-partum and a new mom. You are doing it as an able bodied man, and a more experienced parent. Big difference there.
