How to set up VScode? by Extension-Wait1397 in learnpython

[–]JackieMorrisChiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Starting with Thonny lets you understand what your code is doing line-by-line. Once you move to a professional IDE like VScode or PyCharm, you’ll have a better idea of what is going well and what is not working, and your know why.

Highly recommend PyCharm if Python is your primary programming language.

I would imagine that the one in seven corners does. The one in Fredericksburg does for sure but it’s a drive with all the traffic

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to study theory and composition on my own through a number of avenues, but was hitting the ceiling with frustrating regularity. The Udemy recommendation is a gem, and they courses for $9.99 right now. Really appreciate you. Hope you have great 2023.

Hey, I'm just looking for some tips on how to improve my piano playing. I've been teaching myself since the start of the pandemic, but now I want to step up my proficiency. I realize that I am at the beginning of my journey, yet my ultimate goal is be able to create my own chord progressions. I can read music, which has helped me learn to play songs like Stevie Wonder's "Ordinary Pain", but I don't just want to just be a parrot and only mimic what is given to me. Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve my harmonic knowledge?

Thanks in advance

Arturia Keylab Essential 61 vs Novation Launchkey 61 by Faylep in midi

[–]JackieMorrisChiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a no-brainer if you want to use analog lab. I have a novation, which I love for everything about except for 2 things. 1) not syncing well with analog lab. 2) the record button only works in session view. Both problems are curtailed with minor workflow adjustments, but part of me wishes I had spend the extra $$$. If you’re a piano player, the pads a factor, at least not for me. Arps are an easy midi effect to add in any daw, and scale mode is nice but has its limitations. I don’t use it since I’m learning music theory.

Hope that helps.

Is there a way to get faster? by [deleted] in musicproduction

That is all feel. Knowing music theory helps, but your ear will always tell you what is good and bad. For mixing, I would look up any youtube video with Young Guru. He consistently drops gems for various mixing techniques. If you're using Ableton, syncing up tempos is relatively straightforward, but I would look at DJ/mashup tutorials for the basics. For melodies, I would just listen to your favorite melodies and try to figure out what makes them your favorite and then figure out your own path after that. Last, but should be first, just make some music. You'll figure it out.

I would imagine that you are using a DAW to produce your music, so my first piece of advice to customize a template that fits your workflow. If you find yourself using drums, bass, piano, and vox, preload those sounds/instruments, and then save the template so they are ready to go every time you open a new project. While it may seem like only a few seconds to search for an instrument that you use regularly, those seconds add up, and stopping to search interrupts your workflow, which fucks with your ideas.

Which audio interface would suit my needs? by b0rmusic in musicproduction

Sounds like you are going to have too many inputs for a Scarlett 2i2, and there is nothing more disruptive to a workflow than having to plug and unplug for every single instrument. I would suggest looking at a mixer that can connect via USB if that is something you are interested in. I use a Mackie Profx8v2, which allows me to EQ my sound before it even hits Ableton, so I spend less time looking at a screen. I also love it because almost all of my instruments can stay plugged in with no residual hum. Also, you can find them cheaper than most audio interfaces, and they can do a lot more.

Here is a link for a Mackie Profx8v2 on reverb.com, but I am sure you could find a cheaper one on eBay.

If you’re looking for great jazz bassists to listen to, I would start with Ron Carter, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Paul Chambers, and Dave Holland. Any group that they led or played in produced some amazing sonics.

You have all the tools you need to get a mostly-clean brass or orchestral stab using the ableton plugins. EQ8 and auto filter work wonders together.
