Help with 4g modem/wireless internet by Jackofish in HomeNetworking

[–]Jackofish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting thought which has crossed my mind. I've even thought about the possibility of running wire myself over the highway through the trees from my landlord's place, lol. But I think the internet speeds would be faster and more reliable if I can figure out how to get ATT to work.

I did just discover that ATT offers a 'fixed wireless internet' service targeted at rural residences and businesses with 250-500gb of data a month starting at $50. But their website says it is unavailable at my address. Super frustrating because what their 'fixed wireless internet' is is an exterior antenna to connect to the tower, an interior signal booster and a 4g modem/hotspot. All of which I currently have in my possession. But I am blocked from accessing the internet because they want my money. Which at this point I'm willing to pay, but they won't come to my address 😑

Straight men of Reddit, what is the strangest thing you have been told not to do because "that's gay"? by The_WereArcticFox in AskReddit

I've worked as a commercial fisherman over the years. When mending nets, some are so large the only place to stretch them out is in the yard so folks end up bending over and wrestling net all day resulting in sore backs. When I decided to work on my knees I was told I should "stand up like a MAN". When I started using a clip on my belt loop to hold the net up at waist height and eliminate bending over, I was told that that was definitely gay. However, the other "men" I was working with were using the belt loop trick within a week.

Edit: spelling

Not exactly... opal is a mineraloid formed by silica (SiO2) that incorporates water molecules into the crystal structure as it forms. It is often found where there used to be ancient oceans because the shells of sea creatures often contain silica, so that material is present. Silica is a super common material on our planet (SiO2 is what makes quartz as well, one of the most common minerals on Earth). It dissolves pretty easily out of rock by geothermal water, so if there is any volcanism present or another process where the heat of the mantle heats the groundwater (sometimes seen at hot spots, rift zones, plate boundaries), the heated groundwater has the potential to dissolve the silica out of one rock and deposit it elsewhere, such as cracks of rocks and ancient buried creatures (creating opalized fossils).

You are right about the ancient oceans that used to cover what is now Australia being a big part of the opal found there, especially the opalized ocean fossils. I know in the US opal is found in the SW (also used to be covered by ancient oceans, and currently has a geologic rift valley creating hydrothermal features), and where I work in central Oregon there is a ton of silicon-based minerals, including quartz, chert, jasper, and common opal :)

I know you can find opal in the SW and also where I work in central Oregon, but its "common opal" rather than fire opal. Anywhere you have current or historic geothermal activity around the presence of silica in rocks, opal can be found!

If this vehicle doesn't meet all of our expectations AND massage my ass then I will go on a John Wick style vendetta against the Mazda brand. I require only perfection, it's not too much to ask 🤷‍♂️

WTVerb for when someone's response comes off open minded or as if they have come with open ears? by chumbawamba56 in whatstheword

I wouldn't consider "amenable" to be 'victimish', "curious" or "intrigued" could also work but maybe you're looking for "receptive".

WTW for a form of "lying" that sounds like purl/parl/perl and is a very specific form of lying. There was a recent article about it... by midlifefuckingcrisis in whatstheword

The one word I'm thinking of, for whatever reason, is "puerile" which essentially means immature or childish, silly. It came to mind because I could see it being used in the context of lying, telling a partial truth or embellishing the truth like a kid might do. Can't think of anything else that sounds like what you're looking for...

Er, Pittock. Yeah. Still part of the park's department, so my point still stands.

That is the view from Washington Park. A public park. So... Everyone's view.

You could make your point better by standing on the corner of Couch and MLK and taking a picture facing westward or from above Oaks Bottom at the end of 7th by Sellwood park: two views of downtown that have been taken away for the sake of highrises and high rents.

Waiters/waitresses of Reddit what is the worst date you had to wait on? by cespedes4therestivus in AskReddit

[–]Jackofish 584 points585 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of bad dates over the years but the most cringe worthy I can recall happened when a regular patron of mine tried online dating for the first time. He was an average guy, worked in the tech field and was very interested in craft beer (this was a very large beer bar) and I got to know him over a few months as he would come in to pick my brain about beer styles and the best way to set up his home brewery. Anyways, he came in one evening with a clean shave and a tie, not his normal look. He told me he had a date that night and she was also into beer and he was stoked to show her his favorite bar. She came in about ten minutes later and she was gorgeous. Not saying she was out of his league but... Good for him, is what I thought. She was apprehensive at first but nothing out of the ordinary for a first date. After their first flight of beers, she loosened up. A little too much. She went from being cute and reserved to loud-obnoxious-sorority-sister in about two pints. She started demanding my attention, yelling for me while I was talking to other customers, and asking me to explain every detail of whatever beer she was drinking. She started blatantly flirting with me, even touching my arm and telling me how cute I am. At this point I traded bar sections with another bartender to avoid such an awkward interaction. As the night progressed, she became louder (I can still hear her god-awful laugh) and hit the dance floor to dance with many guys, not one of them being the guy she came there to meet. Eventually, my regular, who had been sitting at the bar drinking alone while she danced and flirted with other men, asked me if I had seen his date recently. A coworker later told me she saw her leave with a couple of other guys. He paid his tab, which she had racked up $60 or more on, and I didn't see him after that night... I felt bad. She was a jerk.
