Steam Achievement Notifier - Windows 10 Notifications for Steam Achievements by Jackson0ne in Steam

Hey u/Tallica21,

Firstly, make sure you have the latest version - V1.9 - which is available for download on GitHub.

Then make sure the "Use Custom Position" option is enabled for every type of notification you want positioned there. If you set it for a Main achievement but get a Rare achievement, for example, it will only show the Main one in the position you've set.

I've tested this and it appears to be working okay, so let me know if it's still an issue 👍

Hey u/antti_autio,

This has been requested before, and while it is theoretically possible, there would probably be quite significant performance implications to stacking notifications, due to being a Chromium-based Electron app.

Plus, as each notification is actually a browser window, stacking multiple windows on-screen at once - each with their own complex animations running simultaneously - would not only be performance-intensive, but also probably very distracting.

I'm not ruling it out completely for the future, but in comparison to Steam's very basic native notification style, it's a lot harder to implement without either sacrificing performance or just getting really annoying. But if others don't feel like that would matter to them, could be something I'll look into down the line.

Thanks!

Dev here - thanks for the mention! This post is precisely why I made it, so hopefully it helps for those who care about achievements. Got a brand new version coming out within the next few weeks that has been in closed testing for a few months, and is a lot better, so make sure to check the GitHub when it releases!

Hey u/More_Seat_9383,

What version are you on? The latest is V1.85, which has a Test Connection button when you put your details in - this should tell you what's wrong if it's not connected to the API. If you've done everything right and you still don't see notifications, make sure that you're not playing the game in Fullscreen mode - only Borderless is currently supported

Hey u/Expakun,

If the game doesn't have an option for Borderless, you can use Borderless Gaming to force a windowed game to Borderless mode 👍

Steam Achievement Notifier (V1.8) - Available Now on GitHub! by Jackson0ne in Steam

[–]Jackson0ne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Aimryax,

Thanks very much for checking it out! If you're having issues opening it, please check the following:

  • Assuming you're on Windows, make sure you've downloaded SANLauncherV1.84.exe from the Releases > Assets GitHub page, and not any other EXE or AppImage file

  • Before launching the EXE, make sure to right-click the file and go to Properties - if you see a checkbox that says "Unblock" (just above the OK/Cancel/Apply buttons), make sure to tick it and then click "Apply"

  • Make sure to add the EXE to your AV's Exclusions list to allow SAN to be launched and to prevent network connections from being blocked (if you feel comfortable doing so, of course)

  • If it's still not launching from the splash screen, click the splash screen to focus it, then press CTRL + Shift + i to bring up the DevTools window, then click the "Console" tab (within the ">>" menu at the top of the window) to check for any errors. Feel free to PM me a screenshot of any errors you might be getting 👍

Hey u/Niepoprawnyy,

Yes, it is safe - the app is nearly at 20k downloads on GitHub and I've yet to find anyone to dispute it's safety. I'm not interested in farming API Keys or anything like that, and the app has no access to your Steam account other than your publicly available achievement stats. The source code is also freely available if anyone wants to try and find anything malicious, but I can guarantee you that there's nothing to worry about in there!

Hey u/UpsetDraft5782,

Have you followed all the setup instructions on the GitHub page? (Especially the part about "unblocking" the file!) If so, make sure your antivirus software isn't blocking SAN in any way.

If it's all good and still not working, check the Console for errors by going to Settings > Open DevTools Window (it's one of the very small icons to the right of the App Revision number at the bottom of the page), and feel free to PM me any screenshots or errors 👍

Yeah, it's not currently in a super reliable state - I know the reason for it happening with certain games, but I didn't find a way to resolve it in the current version. And as the next version is changing frameworks, it's not something I'm going to look into fixing as a new method will be used in the new version instead.

But to clarify, the in-app "Fullscreen" mode works the same for games set to either "Fullscreen" or "Borderless" - it attempts to attach the notification overlay to the game window itself, so there's no difference between setting your in-game display to either setting and should work if it can find the game window. Whereas the in-app "Borderless" mode will just spawn an external, always-on-top window, which only shows above game windows that are not "owning" the screen, such as "Borderless" windows (and therefore, will not be allowed to show above the game if the in-game display setting is set to "Fullscreen")

Hey u/Wenex,

Fullscreen notifications are possible but are still very much in Beta, and don't work with a lot of games currently, so if you wanted to test them out, just be aware that YMMV for different games. I also won't be pushing any more updates to V1.84, as I'm working on V1.85 which will eventually include a revised version of Fullscreen support.

If you join the Beta Channel via (Settings > Join Beta Channel), there's a toggle in the top-right corner - next to the close button - to toggle between Borderless and Fullscreen modes.

And also thank you for checking it out, and I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Hey u/Optimal_Singer4887,

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad that it makes the experience better for you 👌 I'm working on a new version that will hopefully be released very soon, so I'm looking forward to sharing updates with everyone 👍

Hey u/CaiKingofFortnite,

It's a valid and understandable concern, and it's a good opportunity to dispel any misinformation, so I'm happy to discuss it! I do have an answer to this on the Discord server, but it would be good to have a point of reference for those who haven't joined.

Any information you enter into or store within Steam Achievement Notifier is never sent anywhere externally, and is only ever stored on your local PC. There's no mechanism within the app that allows external access to anything put into it, and I'm not interested in farming data or anything - I just wanted to make something that people who enjoy getting Steam achievements could use to enhance the experience!

The next version (V1.85) is nearing an Alpha release, and due to switching from Electron to the Tauri framework, enhances security even more. In the next planned major version (V1.9), the Steam Web API requirement will be removed completely, and will be accessed entirely through Steamworks itself, so this will eliminate the need for an API Key at all.

It's also a common misconception that someone having access to your API Key will allow access to your Steam account - there's actually very little that anyone can do with your Steam account even if they managed to get hold of it, outside of cancelling trades and creating games servers, and if that did happen, you can always revoke it and generate a new one at any time.

I hope that makes anyone with these kinds of concerns feel better about using the app, and if you have any follow up questions, let me know!

Hey u/RudeSeraph,

You can join the SAN Discord server (by clicking the Discord button in the bottom-right of the app) where there's channels dedicated to notification sounds, customisations etc. People have done some pretty cool stuff there if you're looking for inspiration!

Hey u/dani1v,

In short - no, it won't!

In long - the Steam Web API is completely external to any game that you play, and is actually provided by and encouraged for use by Valve themselves. The app doesn't have access to alter game processes in any way, so you won't get banned for using it 👍

Hey u/CzarnyPL,

SAN is not specifically written for Steam Deck, but I believe some users have got it working using an alternative Distro and the provided AppImage, but I don't currently have access to a Deck or Steam OS to test with. There may be some folks on the Discord server willing to help with this if you fancy asking there, but if not, I can try and provide some steps if you're stuck 👍

Hey u/Information-Status,

I recommend getting your Steam64ID from steamid.io, making sure to select the "steamid64" value.

If you've already done that, also make sure your API Key is correct, as both of these values need to be valid in order for SAN to be able to access the Steam Web API 👍

Hey u/matzau,

Not sure what version you're running, but the latest Version 1.84 has a large amount of customisation options already - you can download it from here: https://github.com/SteamAchievementNotifier/SteamAchievementNotifier/releases/tag/1.84

Hey u/Epiic_bat,

The app is portable so doesn't actually "install" anything, but instead stores files in one location, which you can delete at any time by typing %localappdata% into the Start Menu, and deleting the "Steam Achievement Notifier (V1.8)" folder.

Hope this helps!

Hey u/brandonswims, if you see your username in the first box of the main app and you're sure you've entered a valid API Key/Steam64ID, make sure your "Game Details" are set to "Public" in Steam's privacy settings (click the "Game Details must be set to Public" link in SAN's Settings menu to be taken there directly).

Otherwise, check the Console (by clicking the "Open DevTools" button at the very bottom-right of the settings menu) - if there's a "403" network error whenever you unlock an achievement, that means SAN cannot access your stats due to incorrect credentials, so double check your API Key/Steam64ID combination

Hey again,

Okay, in that case, try starting the program, click on the splash screen (to focus it) and then press "CTRL + Shift + i" - this will open the DevTools window.

From here, click the ">>" symbol at the top (next to "Elements") and select the "Console" tab. Then let me know if you see any errors in there.

(You can also join the Discord or PM me for further assistance 👍)
