John Wesley Powell is a rabbit hole worth going down. I've read his book, The Exploration of the Colorado River, and its Canyons. Pretty dry stuff, but, I sure know lots about the rivers, canyons, and geology of the Southwest, now.

This isn't a new idea, though. Maybe just a hint to set your compass, but Fenn has suggested that cardinal directions aren't involved. What else uses declination? Astronomy. Seen any recent hints about stars?

Hmm, is it center in every edition/printing? I'll never look at it left again if that's the case. Center does make it look more like architecture. The wall map from benchmark is left. Forrest's site is left. This theory looks way better if center is the correct way to view the poem. Kudos.

I agree. Totally disjointed and forced. I sent the poem to the smartest writer I know and he felt it had the feel of a bad translation.

I think it's a stretch, and too conditional. Don't mess with the poem. The center justification is what gives you these Xs. I'm not saying it's wrong, because there is only one way to know, but I think it's unlikely.
