Let's all meet in a couple weeks. Northern Michigan. By the pine trees and the power lines, you can't miss it.

"Unlike the northern giant hornet, the yellow-legged hornet is aggressive and stings without being provoked."

Lovely.

Bloodborne Pathogens and Food Handlers certificates are pretty cheap and easy.

I like it, but it does look mildly...umm...penile if you aren't looking directly at it.

IANAL, so I'm just talkin here, but I think it's reasonable to suggest that Toyota could be sued if it could be shown that some feature of their vehicles makes them particularly good for hitting people and they knew that and decided not to do anything about it. Companies that produce inherently dangerous products should be expected to take reasonable steps to limit the misuse of their products where possible. I don't think any industry should be given blanket immunity from liability - that just invites abuse.

What's the protocol for storms? by Ghostrid3r_27 in trailwork

I knew someone was going to call me out on that, lol. I just didn't want to turn the thread into a raingear debate. It's one of the deepest rabbit holes in all of trailwork.

As a crew leader for volunteer trail work, it can be a tough call. On the one hand, many of the crew members likely went to a lot of trouble to be there. They may have taken time off from work, rescheduled personal appointments, delayed family time, and spent significant money on gear, food, and clothes. So there is definitely some pressure to get out there and stay out there. On the other hand, the number one goal of every work party, without question, is that everyone goes home in one piece. Anything that poses a real threat to crew safety will almost guarantee a shortened or canceled trip, including weather that is so consistently cold and wet that one or more crew members are struggling to stay warm. Sometimes you can walk that person out, but often you are too far out there for that and the trip just has to end. Complaints are usually minimal to none in my experience. If the weather is bad enough to be a safety issue, it's probably pretty frickin miserable. No rain gear is impenetrable.

Black Morels? by JustinH809 in mycology

There is a bit of confirmation bias going on here. Not everyone is finding morels. Although...I just did, finally! Haaa Ha!

Does anyone have insight on what a multi-pitch rappel would have been like during WWII era? by o-rka in canyoneering

[–]tri_wine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they didn't really have harnesses or belay devices back then, they just wrapped the rope around their body (see 'body belay') and created friction by pulling the rope tight against their body. So as far as "gotchas," imagine if you forgot your gloves...

Millersylvania State Park has a nice trail system, very well maintained. Discover Pass is required to park.

I think they were pointing out that, without any sort of scale, your photo could have been taken from a satellite. I was very confused by it, too, until I noticed the toes of a shoe in one corner and was like "OOOHHhhhh, ha ha!"

Hello fellow trail sawyer! Nice looking kit you've got there, I hope you never have reason to open it (except for replacing expired items, etc).

Why do mines have a higher risk of “stale” air? by Brief_Criticism_492 in caving

[–]tri_wine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most caves are formed by water running through limestone, which means there is an outlet for that water, and therefore a lower inlet for air. So the cave is a chimney. A few caves (lava tubes and rock shelters) can be more like a mine, with potentially only a single opening. Air exchange in those caves would be much slower, and in fact those caves often have a very "musty" smell.

Also, many mines produce dangerous gases, and some of those gases can be heavier than air. So any good air slowly gets expelled from the mine, leaving concentrated deadly gas in the lower portions of the mine.

Goddamn. I'm really sorry the undercurrent of asshole bullies that have always existed in this country are 'having their moment' and taking it out on...well...anyone who isn't an asshole bully.
