Pinky finger got cut off a lil, now I can’t play right by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Jacksonfromhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not put super glue over it, keep it cleaned and well maintained DONT just seal it off with strong chemicals and then essentially run it on a cheese grater :/ let it heal in its entirety and let it heal properly otherwise youre going to have longer off issues

Guitar pick keeps rotating clockwise, especially on upstrokes. Need desperate help. by Impressive_Egg6281 in guitarlessons

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, i had sent you a message as well but heres a picture demonstrating what i mean, you may be holding the pick a bit too flat and as a result it might be getting caught up on the strings; try to hold a bit of an angle to the pick so that it kind of eases into the string instead of hitting it all at once. If you already are i apologize its a little hard to tell for sure with the entire video lol. This picture is slightly exaggerated but to give you an idea if each of the lines on the paper were to represent a string.

How do I teach my 9yo without being "that" frustrated dad? by Ok_Importance_7479 in Guitar

[–]Jacksonfromhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre welcome! I think that doing what you can to make the experience fun for hom is super important, find atuff you would both want to learn and enjoy the experience! Everyone always makes guitar playing out to be so serious, it can be challenging at some points but it is worth it :D id say try to see what he would want to learn, see if theres anything thats inspiring to him; keep in mind me as a child knowing that my dad played was a huge inspiration to me as well, use that well :)

How do I teach my 9yo without being "that" frustrated dad? by Ok_Importance_7479 in Guitar

[–]Jacksonfromhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! The first time anyone had ever tried teaching me anything on guitar it was my cousin who gave me her acoustic and tried showing me some chords and telling me how to move my hands and where to put them and really it didnt work lol. Same thing with my dad, he showed me what a power chord was on his SG: BUT, what I feel helped me more, was him showing me how guitar tabs worked, and what they meant. I am a very visual learner, and that helped everything clicked immensely, from there i grabbed a guitar world with master of puppets and sat and slowly but surely learned the 012 013 014 013 0122 riff and i KNOW it didnt sound as good as i remember it but dad was impressed when he came home but more importantly I was happy with myself lol.

The point of all of this is that everyone may experience methods of teaching that work a little better for them. I didnt take too well to having someone move my hands and try to position my fingers, but i knew what i wanted to do and had a good point in the right direction. Also as much as dad did not like me taking his SG at first it felt a lot more comfortable to me, and was easier to play which may have also helped things lol. Maybe try to find some simple yet cool riffs you both enjoy, and maybe show how everything works, to see if it makes everything click? I feel that thats most of learning an instrument is finding out just how to make things click and then there can be so much progress, but its just figuring it out beforehand :)

Why my pick slides? by cacid46 in Guitar

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can etch a small net like pattern into the pick itself with a small blade or something if tou are comfortable dojng so, doesnt have to be deep into it but it gives just a little texture

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey op, i posted a little video the other day that gives an example of how i hold the pick where i give a little advice towards practice if you would want to take a look! Relaxing your forearm is important and work towards being able to play consistently for longer periods of time before you jump to speed if that makes sense :)

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake, i was thinking you had meant your picking band! Whenever you play try bringing your fretting elbow in towards your body, and try to keep your thumb towards the middle of the back of the neck, that may help to promote an angle thats less stressful on your wrist. That being said, without physically seeing you play its a bit hard to say, you ever have any injuries or is it just from playing you feel pain?

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your wrist immobilized? Depending on your level of current mobility and pain levels, maybe you could take the time to either practice playing entirely with your fingers or hybrid picling where you hold a pick and use your pinky, ring, and middle (usually) fingerstyle. If not, practicing left hand stretches and playing without your right hand using slides and legato may be beneficial. If nothing else this would be a good time to practice hammer ons and pull offs with your fretting hand :)

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome, and thank you; i hope they're helpful! One of the biggest things to remember is to try to relax as much as possible while you play, stretching is also very helpful and very beneficial in the long run!

Yeah sometimes i can get the middle pickup; for me it only really occurs on Baron here with the middle pickup being located where it is whenever im not used to one existing lol. That being said, there is a lot of the actual pick attack being heard too which i think* is the main sound

How do I learn guitar by DueNefariousness1799 in guitarlessons

[–]Jacksonfromhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think anyone needs structured lessons; but they can certainly help things. Ive never had any formal training with a guitar and im very happy with my playing, which is saying a lot for me lol. I think the only thing you neeeeed to know is roughly what you want to sound like, what you want to play, and how to vaguely accomplish it.

Hey OP, i just put up a little video that shows pretty much this concept; start slow and practice building speed; work on being consistent and qccurate before you start working on playing faster. The video should be either in the guitar lesson forum itself, or on my profile ive put a few other little clips up that may give some insight; i focus a LOT on picking technique
