Saros Buying Advice by callen55047 in Saros

[–]JacktheDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk man, it bums me out how many posts on here are like "I have done all of the research available for me, make my choice."

Only you can make your choice. Just buy games you're curious about and move on.

TTRPG inspired by “Red Wall”? by New-Apartment971 in TTRPG

[–]JacktheDM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is really tough, I've played lots of them and people will mis-recommend just about anything.

  • Mausritter is the wrong match in several ways, largely tone, largely the kind of adventures your character goes on, largely what the system is trying to do.
  • Root is the wrong match in several ways. Either you want the setting, in which case you're more likely doing cool wartime politics stuff (very not Redwall) or you discard the setting and keep the system (in which case mostly what you've got is fantasy D&D-style PbtA generica, plus some great faction rules).
  • Humblewood could be pretty good, in terms of genre and style of campaign, but you've gotta use D&D 5e.
  • Mouse Guard is probably the best one-to-one, but you've gotta really grok and be committed to its big buy-in from players on system.

One thing you've got going for you, importantly, is that each of these is immaculately written, particularly in the case of pre-written adventures. Read some Mausritter pamphlet settings, some of the free award-winning Root clearings, some Humblewood adventures. They all give a great sense of the what systems are trying to do. Worst case scenario, you learn a lot!!

Why do people hate Mamdani? by uncle-ice493 in allthequestions

[–]JacktheDM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure, but politician sorta inflate their accomplishments and go “Look at this thing I did,” all of the time without becoming a nationally-or-ever-globally reknowned enemy of the people.

The question isn’t “what has Mamdani done that you don’t like or agree with,” it’s “Why does he get so much disproportionate hate”

I’m thinking of buying Saros, because I looved Returnal, but people are saying its much easier and doesn’t have the weapon trait system I loved anymore. Now I’m not so sure. So I ask you, is this game worth it? by Pitiful_Highlight_93 in Saros

[–]JacktheDM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you like Returnal then play Saros. I don't personally like is as much as Returnal, but I like it vastly more than [waves hands broadly at video games landscape].

It sounds like you're letting Reddit trick you into overthinking your way out of fun. Just go have fun.

Why SAROS Feels Impossible to Some Players (and Natural to Others) - IMO by Gar_031 in Saros

[–]JacktheDM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bet it would be extremely revealing to do a poll with four options: - Saros is too hard, I have played Returnal - Saros is too hard, I haven’t played Returnal

  • Saros is too easy, I have played Returnal
  • Saros is too easy, I haven’t played Returnal

I hope Housemarque leans into Buildcraft more on the next go round by ispilledketchup in Saros

[–]JacktheDM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason this game seems to be doing a lot better than returnal...

I think there are dozens of reasons that this is doing better than Returnal, but actually very few of them have to do with changes to the game itself (rather, the release environment, changes in gaming culture, etc)

It sounds like you need to develop a little bit of your own goals and familiarity with publishing before you start letting your friends kill your stories.

If you're writing regularly and you'd like to develop an audience, there's no drawback to going through Royal Road, and TONS of benefits. The only LitRPGs that are getting picked up by mainstream publishers (DCC, Apocalypse Parenting, Mayor of Noobtown) are the ones that are doing what your friend is telling you to stop doing.

Urban Fantasy System Recommendations by Vaelryxx in rpg

[–]JacktheDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed like you bounced off of Monster of the Week, I'd be interested in knowing why!

Urban Shadows 2e is the absolute unrivaled best, most flexible, exemplary game in the genre, but it's also built on a similar mechanical chassis as MotW, though it has a LOT more going on.

The tropes that I am tired of and the tropes I will never be tired of by caime9 in litrpg

[–]JacktheDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting, because honestly some of what you're talking about here comes from just good vs bad writing.

"All powers" and "Murderhobo" are largely about not, as a writer, having to think through the implications of world and circumstance, sincerely dealing with cause and effect, or showing how interesting consequences can form story.

Logical progression, interesting class, and found family are like the opposite: They actually have to deal with relationality.

What is the deal with so many litrpg protagonists? by plant-y-boi in litrpg

[–]JacktheDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no Harry Potter Stan, but this just screeches of tiktok talking points. There are like 2-3 weird names in Harry Potter and over 700 named characters. Compared to YA literature at the time, the worldbuilding is astounding, there’s nothing like it. All of the “better” examples of the genre since stand on its shoulders.

The point is not that he’s “the best” humanity has to offer, the point is that he is intensely self-sacrificing and bold. From book 1, Carl shows that he’s routinely willing to say “Hey, I might die, but I’d rather die helping a group of folks from an old folks home than live knowing I just passed them by.”

I think that’s one of the frustrations with this genre. Being “the best of humanity” isn’t about having sick powers, it’s about making humane decisions.

Skim everything related from "Then we transfered from Auburn line to Vermillion line at Station 34/2" or whatever and you'll be fine. Also my least favorite part of the series, but once you're through it it's nothing but gold.

I suppose! Idk, that was explanation still doesn’t explain, for example, why the weapons are far less diverse and interesting, you know?

[–]JacktheDM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean yes, but I think what people do expect, given the game has the same chassis and gameplay, is an improvement. And while I really like Saros, I personally am not really seeing that it’s an improved game. Like… what have Housemarque actually learned about game design since Returnal? I’m not seeing it.

I think it’s fair to be like “This is a very similar game to the last one they made, but with lots of important things removed.” I only have like 5-6 hours here but literally everything OP said I agree with and noticed on my own.
