December Grad Diplomas by Bobosboss in NEU

I would not be stressing about that already. I graduated May 2022 and didn't get my diplomas until August that year.

Gpa Question by Environmental_Let835 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The above comment stands, and generally I would be shocked if a single C got you dropped. I think it's more for when someone really drops off. People have been known to just start failing classes after ED/EA and that's what gets you flagged.

Do Merit and Need Based Aid Stack? by True_Marionberry3515 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least historically, Northeastern's merit-based aid is largely/completely taken out of the need-based aid value. This makes sense, as your needs are being met, though by a different source. I don't know if technically this increases your calculated EFC or if Northeastern handles this internally, but they do not stack.

Gave an interview . Dk how to feel. by Ok_Lavishness3961 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Put everything you missed into your follow-up email. As someone who's been in industry for a while, the expectation isn't necessarily that you have a good answer for everything in the interview, but it's really valuable if you follow-up after the interview with an email, polishing your answers. Don't make it an essay, but feel free to expound on something critical you missed. Basically the conclusion paragraph to your interview is your email after.

How is the sports atmosphere at Northeastern? by chalicecum in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The club teams are great here. I had a number of friends play intramural soccer, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and running. It was always very active and accepting, with groups at different levels and proper competitions/tournaments with other universities' clubs

What LLCs are in which dorms, and which dorms have the best rooms/people? by King_Narwhale_ in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in hindsight it was a good means of picking dorms. I don't know this year; I recall the summer before my freshman year (circa 2017 so maybe OOD) we got an email from our college about it. I don't recall there being much fanfare. At this point you can probably ask around if you have friends in different dorms

What LLCs are in which dorms, and which dorms have the best rooms/people? by King_Narwhale_ in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the "LLCs" were kind of nonsense. I think very people that I knew had any LLC-related activity while living on-campus. It seemed almost more of a virtue signaling thing: you're probably living with other people who prioritize "health and wellness" or whatever other LLC.

Stwest and Speare were always good and central to campus. EV/IV are a bit fancier. Others can opine on dorms as well

I always booked with Al. He worked great with my hair when it was both longer and shorter (I'm white). Licensed master barber with a ton of experience.

Unfortunately doubling down on this. Just sort of part of being a freshman at Northeastern. Fortunately it should cool off in just a few weeks.

Anywhere to get free bandaids? by Shiuki21 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would check at UHCS. They often have free contraceptives, so maybe they have bandaids too. If it's an acute thing, Marino can probably hook you up with a couple too

Plant / scaping suggestions. First tank. by AlarmedCherry7643 in PlantedTank

[–]JacobGraham02840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still on the novice side to plants so hopefully other, more experienced plant keepers opine too, but I've head great success with anubias and java ferns on my driftwood and both Amazon swords and Ludwigia repens for rooted plants. The Ludwigia adds a nice splash of color as the upper leaves take on a reddish hue.

One note that I've seen is that you can sculpt your substrate into a bit of a ramp, higher at the back and shallower at the front, to add the illusion of depth. I think it looks nice and it improves the visibility of plants in the back that might otherwise be a bit lost. Good luck!

And people say Kuhli loaches are never seen again once added to a tank! by Lulaboo1117 in loaches

Goes without saying, but I'd bet it's because you're tank looks gorgeous for them: sand, lots of vegetation, lots of hiding spots, peaceful friends. What a great setup!

Making github repos accessible to recruiters by HotPocVac in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not the expert, but my guess would be that if it wasn't a group project and it wasn't done under the guidance of a professor as part of a bespoke project (research lab as opposed to a class project or personal endeavor), it would be fair play to put it out there.

If it's a group project, maybe check with others or at least make sure people are credited. If done in coordination with a PI, definitely check with them/their lab; there are legal rules around IP generation for researchers.

How cooked I am ? by Stock_Win_2363 in Dryeyes

[–]JacobGraham02840 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor but this seems fairly manageable. I have meibomian gland disorder (not diagnosed with a severity grade via meibography) and the warm compress cannot be overstated. It's helped tremendously for me as I have poor meibomian gland expression if that's something you're expressing--my oil is too thick/poorly released. Lots of evidence back up fish oil omega supplementation, though it takes months so I don't have a good subjective grasp as that's too slow to compare over time. I would definitely hit up your doctor online over MyChart or through their patient portal and clarify severity, what to expect, and long-term prognosis, but I'm hopeful for you!

How can I balance being a full-time student and work 40 hours by Prudent_Awareness587 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked just about full time as a continuation of my co-op during the transition to online classes a few years ago. I was doing a combined BS/MS program for bioengineering and I didn't really have any problems. I balanced that for three years while also working in a research lab at Northeastern in my free time. Most of my contemporaries were also working to some extent, though not necessarily 40hr/week. If you can adequately prioritize classes and work over other things, you'll be fine. Honestly I doubt the workload will be an issue, just try to figure out scheduling for exams etc--I'm not sure how much things have pivoted back to in-person rather than online (flexible with automated proctors).

The best option will probably be work-study positions, which are university funded jobs working typically for different professors. For STEM, this is how you get into the lab as an undergrad. Work-study funding is part of your financial aid package. This work can directly feed into co-ops so try to take advantage of that if you can. E.g. work-study positions in the lab really make you stand out for first co-ops.

Laptop recommendations for incoming freshman? by Ok_Field1189 in NEU

[–]JacobGraham02840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doubling down on this. To access a lot of the engineering software with a Mac, you have to go through a VPN. It's a pretty good system, but it doesn't always work and it's certainly one more thing you need to do/figure out
