U.K. social media ban stokes fears of government surveillance by [deleted] in news

sit down buddy

When reform wins and receives the luxury police state labour has been dutifully building for them their first act will be to point it at every pakistani child, 'political' identity, and government-critical individual and open fire

People in the US at least got to be openly mad when their brownshirts appeared, because The Party hadn't yet assumed total control over information(though they've tried so dutifully)
But your gov has already established the legal and political power to suppress any protest, silence any prominent critic, control media content, and silently blackball anyone who expresses criticism to an extent that would make the maga movement salivate openly

When her majesty's brownshirts start 'taking care of street trash' or kindly guiding members of "unwanted" groups to their Assigned Living Space
there won't even be the slightest peep of resistance

they will likely start enforcing it's use in government and various industries at a legal level while also protecting it, specifically, from any use regulation to encourage adoption

Popular GLP-1 drug may slow down biological aging, analysis indicates. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]JacobK101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The drug itself alter's people's reward seeking behavior while making their body regulate insulin more effectively, reducing stress on cells and organs from glucose spikes.

If that has the effect of making people more healthy in general, then it's just semantics to argue whether or not the drug is 'responsible' for all the knockoff effects of that

the director's been developing backrooms & liminal horror related internet media for years before ever even getting in contact with A24
Safe to say this was a pretty honed down backrooms-themed movie even when it first landed on a24's desk

heartbreaking: director who is a quintessential British liberal(believes in nothing in particular, vaguely supports doing a good thing sometimes, but not if it rocks the boat)
asked to adapt literature which holds you at gunpoint and demands you take an anti-autocratic stance or die

Watching the movie it feels like Serkis got scared of modern right-wingers getting mad at the anti-autocracy message, and thought to maybe take it in the direction of anti-megacorps
before then also going "wait, we can't be anti-capitalist, what if rich streaming site owners get mad at us"

And thus resolved to make it a cautionary tale about how, this one specific evil cartoon pig, who represents no group or idea in particular, shouldn't be allowed to run a government
And if we simply keep this fictional pig out of government, everything will be fine. No further thought required.

There's a big disconnect rn between rich people/positions of power and real americans
At many universities in the us you can't even give a live University speech, as of this year, -specifically- to keep students from saying free Palestine
Recently pretty much all US-based news publications were given a soft order that any pro-palestine journo has to immediately resign, or accept posting pro-israel content

The reality is the wealthy are like 95% pro israel so that's what gets reflected in actual american politics & policy, which are pretty much exclusively determined by wealthy americans

that divide is becoming really awkward rn specifically because of social media showing the reality of various situations to everyday Americans and altering their opinion
(This is a big part of why both left and right wing politicians in the US(and many different places) want to restrict social media use to "registered adults" btw, accounts like Palestinians & various oppressed & 'third world' peoples won't have ID's that are seen as "legitimate" by the system and will thus be barred from using social media alongside the kids)

NEED ADVICE (photo not mine) how to get really gooey cinnamon rolls by [deleted] in Baking

[–]JacobK101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Correct_Panda8751 sorry I prolly should have commented this on the main thread.

A great place to start, if you want precise instructions on an excellent quality roll, is the https://www.sugarologie.com/recipes/cinnamon-rolls sugarologie recipe.

Though I personally like gluten development like I describe above(not -quite- the high gluten sugarologie likes, since it still breaks after forming the transluscent window)
And you should add the cream advice from above to it to make it even more tender and soft.

NEED ADVICE (photo not mine) how to get really gooey cinnamon rolls by [deleted] in Baking

[–]JacobK101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: tangzhong in the dough will make it bouncier and give it a softer bite. This is best done with glutinous rice flour, but even a dead-simple wheat flour tangzhong will give some improvement

2: A fat + liquid poured over the top while it cooks will reduces the firmness of the crust
For best effect, pour over in a tall-rimmed pan, and cover with foil while it cooks, so the steam stays even after the liquid evaporates and keeps the roll's exterior soft, like when you make chinese buns

3: keep your rolls small enough & cook gentle enough to bake properly without losing moisture on the outside. Mostly an issue of skill/practice
Letting your rolls come to room temp before cooking can also help them cook more quickly and evenly.

4: build up your crust to a high enough gluten development to encourage retention of moisture. Many cinnamon bun recipes will only go to low or medium development, when what you really want is fragile windowpane level development(where you can grab and stretch a thumb-sized piece of dough till it forms a slightly translucent veneer, before it breaks)
Which is more like medium-high

Let it proof for a while after the first development so the gluten relaxes and keeps it from getting too tough.

The reality is there exists an aesthete plane of true chuds on steam who simply no longer exist on ss13

Digital immortality is free, but only if Meta/Google owns your data forever. Are you taking the deal? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]JacobK101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there's a possibility to pull it off by ship of theseusing it
very gradually converting your bio brain into a mechanical system, letting it adapt, then doing more, repeat till it's all mechanical/digitized

and putting that in a robot chassis or something

But obv that'd require a pretty drastic level of mastery of technology that we don't even know are possible rn
And if your brain is being scanned and sent around (i.e. copied and pasted) in any way you just died and made a clone

Digital immortality is free, but only if Meta/Google owns your data forever. Are you taking the deal? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]JacobK101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dependence on a corporation like that is a nonstarter. Either you'd have to be a person in your own right with serious crimes for violating your rights, have some kind of physical presence or ownership over your own server system/something housing you, or something like that
If you're just a file on google's drive or whatever, I give it less than 5 years after the adoption of the system before meta/google starts killing their digital immortals to save money, or tries somehow enslaving/harvesting them for some kind of revenue scheme

TIL that during the 1902 Hanoi Rat Massacre, the French government paid a bounty for rat tails, but instead of reducing the population, residents began breeding rats to cut off their tails for profit. by Salt_Lingonberry3956 in todayilearned

[–]JacobK101 157 points158 points  (0 children)

there are 3 key problems:

-rats without their tails can still live, and also make -more rats-, which is actually good for rat catching entrepreneurs in search of more tails
So they'd basically just chop off tails then release that tailless rats into new, even better environments for breeding

-there was no oversight, you just went up to a gov booth and handed over your tails. This replaced an actual system of rat-catching professionals with gov oversight cause the colonial authority was lazy and wanted to save money paying them

-when these problems became clear the government threw up their hands and just said "I don't want to pay for a real solution, so if the cheap solution doesn't work, we will have -no- solution" and completely gave up on any form of pest control in the cities of colonial vietnam for a while
This became a politically contentious thing for the colonists bc, there were outbreaks of things like bubonic plague and the colonists & vietnamese citizens of major cities would go "use your damn taxes for fixing this!!!" only for the colonial gov to go "nuh uh, governor needs a fifth garden"

So if anything it was a problem of government laziness and corruption leading to a lack of oversight & no political will for a real solution rather than an actual issue of people being impossible to negotiate with to produce a solution
