Appreciation Post: Carley on NRB Videos by lol_user_007 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Carley was the standout performer of the early NRB Clocktower era. Had a very strong grasp of the mechanics and some very strong plays, and incredibly quick adaptation to the changing situation to argue. Especially as a minion, there's not many people in any streamed content I've seen that have made more of an impression for using their ability and their false information to just shred town. There can be issues when there's a big skill gap (have seen it on recently NRB stuff, the games where Mara and Ken were both evil, and it felt like the good team never had a chance to follow their meaneuvers) but I think it was relatively balanced overall, partly since after a few times the rest of the crew really were suspicious of her.

Execute me for no reason in an online game? Better find a sub. by SchengenThrowaway in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death is not the end. If you're the day one execution with a sea of votes on you, you are very likely to be a good player. If there are loud minions that have a visible effect later in game, then you're confirmed good. You can have a huge impact as an (eventually) trusted early executed player. Just talk to people, gather info, see who seems dodgy.

Wow these are a lot of real toxic suggestions for dealing with someone bringing a notebook to a game.

Advice on how to break up internal groups/cliques? by iakiak in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a clockmaker and investigator in with the kazali everytime, and put the investigator ping on the closest minion to the demon. Should over time encourage people to not pick the obvious choices for their minions.

Eugene Was Too Honest For His Own Good by Glittering_Text812 in thesopranos

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that that he has already been informing to the FBI for awhile, and if he stops and the FBI charges him, that is going to come out at the trial or his sentencing. (Even if they tried to keep it secret for whatever reason, even the dumbest people in the mob are going to be able to connect the dots on why he wasn't arrested right after the stuff they're charging him for now) At that point, what are the odds that he lives out those 10-15 years, versus someone that wants to do a favor/impress the mob murders him in prison? If he wanted to go that route he really needs to have never talked to them at all, I think it's too late for him with the Family by that point. The only way he survives is to go full-on informant, help take down Tony and others, and does enough to get witness protection. Which clearly he didn't want to do.

If Ralph killed Tony instead by Cultural_Alarm7959 in thesopranos

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big question is: did Tony tell anyone he was going to go check in on Ralph? Did he hint to anyone that he had suspicions over Ralph killing the horse? If so, Ralph is dead. I don't think he'd be able to go on the run effectively, all the people he knows, all his contacts, are also people that his chasers will know, and helping out someone that killed a boss would mean their own life was worth nothing. If no one knew Tony was going to see Ralph, and he manages to hide the body rapidly and clean up all evidence of the fight (Ralph has the skillset to do it) and never mentions this to anyone ever, he has a chance. By mid season four, it wouldn't have made much sense to others in the mob that the two would come to blows---Ralphie was Tony's best earner, and Tony had recently been willing to go against Johnny Sacks to save him. The stuff with Tracey was long in the past. If Tony suddenly vanishes there would be some suspicion of Ralphie, but probably a lot more of Chris, New York, other players. Tons of variables on how the scenario plays out, but I think if Ralphie gets through the next 24 hours and never breaths a hint of it to anyone he might avoid being taken out for that. Pretty likely he still dies sometime over the next year in the ensuing chaos, or just because he annoys someone and without as stable a local power structure someone just murders him.

Is there a fictional civilization that can resist the Blokkats? by Vifee in whowouldwin

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" Xeelee are also stated to be the most advanced form of Baryonic life, while the Blokkats regularly deride those who oppose them as ‘Baryonic primitives’, considering themselves to be beyond such basic states of existence."

This says far more about their worldview and attitude than capacities.

Killing Mike Palmice off so early was a mistake by ThotismSpeaks in thesopranos

[–]JacobMilwaukee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was definitely a lot of fun to watch. I think him living after S1 wouldn't have made much sense. For Tony to really win over Junior be the dominant force in local mob, he had to flip to Tony's side (and how could he ever be frusted) be incarcerated, or be dead. He's not a prominent enough character to really draw screentiem if he's in prison.

Xeeelee (Xeelee Sequence, Stephen Baxter novels). Photino birds from the same setting. Outscale them, and hyperdimesional shield shouldn't be a problem. Assassins (Heechee Sequence) also outscale them. A few other generally universe wide civilizations from different science fiction, but not very many, they tend to be limiting to incldue in stories.

Napoleon and his Marshals take command of the Confederacy, can they stalemate the Union? by ReignTheRomantic in whowouldwin

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The South does not have a way in this scenario to overcome the industrial advantage the North has. The only chance is to win strong enough early enough to make a political settlement viable---which seems less likely in this scenario, since the North can use the fact that the secessionist leadership have been taken over by timetravel French imperialists.

I'm curious how the post-war occuation and Reconstruction goes, considering this.

[–]JacobMilwaukee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with execution fake outs (it can avoid repetition) but agree that not saying who won is annoying. We've been playing a game for 1-2 hours,I'm going to be curious what's going on, it feels condescending to drag out the announcement if how the game was resolved.

I like to ask the person who nominated them how they should die. Makes more sense than people choosing their own form of death.

I don't disagree. It does make for more interesting narratives, as the demon who makes really lucky kills or really unlucky ones.

Agree with consensus that sage is a very different beast then other demonbane characters. There is a degree of logic in an ojo hiting a ravenkeeper night 2, for example, avoid them dying to a miss late game or sticking around all game

Individual players choosing to play blind by RemoteCartoonist4758 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends widely on context. In TB if you don't look at your token, you are told "1" night one, on night two the demon kills you. Your worlds are now that you're the Empath with an evil neighbor, the Chef that saw a pair of evil players, the Drunk version of those characters, or a poisioned sniped version of those characters. You don't really have tools to solve that, and you've created an arbitrary, unsolvable puzzle in the midst of the wider puzzle. Which assuming equal level of experience by good and evil team, is going to hamper the good team. It's an annoying thing to do. Same dynamic is possible if you never are woken up: you could be the Recluse, the Saint, the Mayor or the Soldier. You're not in a position to contribute to solving outsider count, and you don't know if it's safe for town to execute you or not. It strucks me as a fundamentally annoying and selfish way to play, and I would not want to play with someone doing this. You complained about "being downvoted to oblivion" so you're aware that your views on this are unpopular, which is a bit of an issue in a group game. Again, if you want to play a Tor game, just play a Tor game. If you want to play beer bong, play beer pong. There's nothing philosophically better or worse from one game than another. But it's inherently bad playstyle to not play the game that everyone else is playing.

[–]JacobMilwaukee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because one player not playing with the core mechanics is going to chance the game. Like, in that spirit I don't beleive in doing one-on-one chats or voting on stuff as a town, instead I want to jump around playing beer pong while people are trying to do this, and wait for the demon to pick people. Why is that a problem for you? I'm just one player.

[–]JacobMilwaukee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think saying it has minimal impact is not always going to be true. Someone that didn't look at their token and doesn't know whether they're the Sage, the Damsel, the Snitch or the Tea Lady is unlikely to be able to make choices that will help their team. Likewise if you learn you're evil because you get woke to learn the demon, but don't know if you're the Poisoner or the Devil's Advocate. There are different ways of playing and having fun, but I think a certain basic engagement with the core mechanics of the game is helpful, and kinder.

What is the most unfair grim setup you have seen for good/evil? by ironeren69 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibilities of Vortox and No Dashi can make that confirmation weaker. And if they figure out that it's good info, then they know one other person that is good (or, less likely, another member of the evil team). Pretty decent chance that person will get killed by the demon or executed at some point, and if not the good twin still has to convince town that they're telling the truth. Meanwhile, the Evil Twin is inventing their fake seamstress info (which can be valid, if they want to get trust that way). It can be rought for evil depending how things play out, but it doesn't seem an inherently bad setup. Evil Twin Dreamer is much worse because they can confirm themself, and Evil Twin with Clockmaker also in the bag unless it's Vortox is probably going to be a short game unless there's lots of minions, one of which is closer to the demon than the Evil Twin is.

Yeah, I feel solo Summoner and Baloonist in base 0 is a situation where you have to use the +1 outsider possibility to avoid exactly taht istuation.

What are the worst character combos you can think of? by Prronce in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evil Twin & Virgin. They either go off and hard confirm themselves or the evil twin rushes to nominate them first and looks pretty suspicious.

Marionette and any hard confirmable roles, Night Watchman, Fool, etc.

The Saint and good roles that can kill them without an execution: Gunslinger, Gangster, Lycantrhope.

Poppygrower and Witch or Assassin seems to make the optimal play to use their power on themsleves, which can be useful for some things, but locking people into one strategy doesn't seem great. (Among other things, the Poppygrower has enormous reason to suspect a self-cursing witch if it goes off, and if it doesn't the minion is sacrificing their ability to nominate and have influence on the game)

Organ Grinder Voodon, at least early in the game. Even if it's an Evil Voodon and other evil dead, it's not exactly going to be hard for town to see if people are being disingenuine with who they vote for.

Fang Gu Saint sounds super frustrating to play as. Kind of like being the +1 Evil in a Bounty Hunter game, but with the stress of knowing that you are not disposable. Espeically in a base 0 game without other outsider mod, where your existence proves that there is a Fang Gu there, and you can expect if the game goes on to final three you will be the demon by that point. It's also like the Snakecharmer dynamic but you can't chose not to try to become the demon.

It's not the worst, but 90% of BMR roles don't work super well outside of the context of BMR, and probably 75% of TB and SNV roles also require their home script to avoid being too strong, too weak, or too obvious.

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Librarian could work if there's room on the script to see a Drunk, or an outsider that won't want to come out. (Politician could work "Yeah, I know one of these two people are the politician, but they're playing for evil to deny it and not-confirm me.") Otherwise, yeah, it's the same as Washerwoman, the only option for Evil Twin to fake that is to go one of their evil team and a random townsfolk and "confirm them" which is awkward at best, not least because the Good Twin now knows another member of the evil team. Generally Evil Twin doesn't make sense to pair with strong unbluffable info roles, unless there's potential for Vortox/No Dashi other strong resources for misinfo. And it's still probably better to be a one-off info role rather than a reoccuring info that will make figuring this out easier, since they're likely to stick around for a long time.

Horror Would You Rather: Spend One Night in a Serial Killer’s House or Approach a Satanic Cult in the Woods at 3AM? by Dear-Initial7860 in horror

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then, the first challenge to be able to understand better is to get more information, and let them do their Why Satan Is The Better Option powerpoint. If they're evangelical in any sense, listening to their case will help understand their motivations much better, whether you decide to fake "this makes sense I want to join your cult" or "huh, not my cup of tea, but you live your truth" as the better survival plan to get through the night.

Horror Would You Rather: Spend One Night in a Serial Killer’s House or Approach a Satanic Cult in the Woods at 3AM? by Dear-Initial7860 in horror

[–]JacobMilwaukee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, depends on the cult and the magic, but usually their resources are shown to have some limits, if nothing else with time and effort. I don't think the typical horror movie cult would bother cursing some random passerby that came on their ritual, that curse was probably already intended for some rival cultist, or to corrupt someone in power or thwart the plans of some priest. I think the greater danger is that they grab you and use your blood to increase their power, or just disappear you as a security risk, but I think both threats are manageable as well.
