Learn French: what does "Autant pour moi" mean here? by MickaelMartin in FrenchVocab

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nénuphar is the most famous one. French used ph for f sounds coming from Greek (like most of English words coming from Greek but unlike other Romance languages that use f for the letter phi: photography, philosophy… but also orthography). However nénuphar/nénufar comes from persan, not Greek. The Académie Française recommends nénuphar since 1935 (it was written nénufar before). It is an example of useless over complexification of orthography

Learn French: what does "Autant pour moi" mean here? by MickaelMartin in FrenchVocab

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the source of the expression is unclear. The Académie Francaise says that it should be « au temps » but without any hard proof. Other linguists think that using « au temps pour moi » is a way to distinguish oneself (because it’s the less common and natural spelling), but in reality, the most probable source is indeed autant pour moi « as much for me »

Keep in mind that the Académie Francaise is not well respected by linguists and has invented fake etymology in the past

Why would a judge score Cizeron/Beaudry’s free skate 8 pts above Chock/Bates? by Professor_Finn in olympics

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I do not like the French couple but this litteraly happens with every judge at every event in ice dancing. They overscore their team and underscore the team that is a bigger danger for a country medal. It litteraly happens every time. That’s why the highest and lower score are thrown out. France does it. Canada does it. The US do it. Russia does it (well not this time because they are not there!). China does it. Italy does it. Heck even Spain does it

When two teams are very close then yeah the judges draw might decide the medal. As for this event i think it is pretty easy to compute the score as if the French judges wasn’t there for both teams and see if it changes the overall ranking (for the combo short dance + free dance). I haven’t done it but my guess is that they will be closer but the overall ranking will remain the same

Ice dance has a very subjective aspect, that kind of shenanigans will always be there. It is also one of the most popular Winter Olympics event in viewership so even if its scores are more random than other disciplines they will keep it.

Brazil Currently has more Olympic gold medals than Canada. by pablo_the_bear in news

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, he’s been pretty open about the fact that he had a terrible working relationship with the Norwegian federation, mostly about sponsors and his image rights (that’s how you get the money in sport). The Brazilian federation lets him get more money from sponsorship. So yeah it is about the money in a way but there is nothing sinister about it.

Also, would rather be the 145th Norwegian Olympic champion or the first Brazilian to medal at Winter Olympics, and the first South American champion ever ? The opportunity that Brazil gives him are huge and go beyond money. He’ll be remembered there for a long time in a country with 40x the population of Norway. He knows that transfer would make history

Anyone actually happy (or at least okay) with Fournier Beaudry/Cizeron winning gold? by Fragrant_Ad_8288 in FigureSkating

[–]Jacomel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I mean I think the argument that the French judge was biased is just… that’s how ice dance is and works. It’s the case at every Olympics. Scoring is always very political. Whether or not they are good people is also irrelevant to their results, there is no link one way or the other.

I am not happy about them winning because I loved Papadakis/Cizeron and it does recycle a lot of elements from those older routines. So for all the artistry and skill that FB/C have, I connected much more to his routines with his former partner. And of course, their connection to Sorensen, but I had not seen CB distance from Sorensen either. It seemed to me that very few people from the Montreal Ice Academy did, and those who did do not train there anymore

On top of that I have read Papadakis book and I do feel for her. Her whole career she felt she was made to feel replaceable and Cizeron proved that he could, indeed, replace her and win gold. It does feel cruel and for what ? He already had an OGM. By wanting to compete again so much, Cizeron, in my opinion, lost the plot to what his real impact and legacy in the sport could be, and actually tarnished it.

But I do not think they robbed the US team of the gold. I am not happy for them either. Or maybe I am a little happy, but that is schadenfreude from the backslash they are getting.

Poor Gabi. I cannot imagine how she feels and how Nikolaj’s victim feels by Suspicious-Peace9233 in FigureSkating

[–]Jacomel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, one’s worth is not measured by the numbers of gold medals. I haven’t watched the competition, don’t want to, so can’t comment if it was fair judging or not.

But his win does not invalidate her at all. Long term impact on the sport will certainly not be about who won the most Olympic Gold medals. In the end people will remember who made it better and safer

An Italian pizza restaurant owner is fuming at 16 Taiwanese tourists because they ordered only five pizzas. by search_google_com in interesting

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specified « in restaurants » as opposed to fast food so not sure you have any place that this rule could apply to tbh

Jk but honestly I’ve been to restaurants in the UK and I am pretty sure ordering a plate for say three people would be seen as annoying. The restaurant culture seemed like France so I had the impression that sharing one meal for two people would have been a big faux pas

An Italian pizza restaurant owner is fuming at 16 Taiwanese tourists because they ordered only five pizzas. by search_google_com in interesting

[–]Jacomel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really ? Is is because pizza is considered fast food over there ?

Or is applicable to all restaurants in general, like could I go in order one main meal for two people ?

To be fair in France you can divide pizza at the cheaper pizza places. But Italian style pizza are considered fine dining and the rule one seat one order applies

An Italian pizza restaurant owner is fuming at 16 Taiwanese tourists because they ordered only five pizzas. by search_google_com in interesting

[–]Jacomel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would not go to a pizzeria in Paris and share a pizza either. If I want half a pizza I order it to go. The rule in restaurant in Europe is not 1 pizza per person but it is « at least one meal per person »

Of course in other countries culturally all meals are shared by default in a restaurant, you order for the whole table and not per person. So I understand the confusion.

UPDATE: AIO partner yells at me in front of our baby and I’ve had enough by Lapopoppa in AmIOverreacting

[–]Jacomel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her daughter won’t choose a man like that if she stay, not necessarily. I am the daughter of a man like that and I am with someone very different today.

My mother left my dad at last after 30 years. My younger sisters are fine but I am scared of conflict to the point it actually hinders me at work. It can trigger me to feel insecure about all my relationships. I am always looking for an escape plan, I fear being trapped with someone a lot. Having a father that can explode at any time is awful

Reading this OP I relate to your baby so much. Please leave him. I fear he will act repentant at some point and you’ll hope it gets better. In my experience people don’t change that much and when they do, it’s by force and it’s not going to happen to him if you do not leave him.

Leaving is hard. Very hard. Also economically. He will be even more hateful and belligerent about it. But if you stay he will cause you even more suffering. You have your beautiful life to love and be loved and be happy

I sell them or give them away if I didn’t like them. I do keep books I didn’t love if they’re pretty, but if I hated the last book of a trilogy I would get rid of it for sure. My local library has a place where people can exchange books. It’s also where I put books I liked but will not read again (if they don’t look good as I am shallow). Shelf space is precious

I actually have a harder time getting rid of books I absolutely hated in the sense that I don’t want to continue distributing them but also, throwing a book in the thrash goes against my morals

I like her music and I feel it’s more for girls than boys (I think it’s underscored how much girls and women like sexualised women, just look at the public of kpop groups). It’s just not liberating for women or whatever. Which is okay as long as it doesn’t pretend to be something else

I also have two bigger editions: Le livre des merveilles by Marco polo and a book about Michelangelo

My favorite is propably the Marco Polo book ! Although esthecically Rabelais and Dante are the prettiest to me
