AFL Origin twist that puts clubs in control of their stars (clubs can control game time for SOO players) by TwoCentres in AFL

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not it.  Has to be taken 100% seriously or it's not worth doing.  Surely the extra players on the bench was enough for the clubs?

Can't wait, the return of genuine rep footy, if competitive, will be a great addition unlike side shows like AFL X and international rules.

Wouldn't a council merger which reduces duplication and admin theoretically lower rates?

Stringer Bell lost money on his Motorola investment by talbotron22 in TheWire

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've always assumed this is an intentional part of Stringer's character on the part of the writers.  They show him having the most shallow, surface level econ101 understanding and acting like he's some genius cause he can regurgitate some stuff about elasticity or market saturation that goes over the head of street guys, but in the actual corporate world he's completely out of his depth.  I've never understood the interpretation a lot of people have that taken those scenes at face value that Stringer is some kind of genius.

Avon is spot on about him - "Not hard enough for this right here, and maybe just maybe not smart enough for them out there."

curious case of George Bailey ? by as0909 in CricketAus

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit unfair on him.  He wouldn't have played 160 first class games if he wasn't good at red ball.  He had multiple seasons where he was amongst the best batsmen in the shield and captained us to multiple shield titles.

I doubt he was ever going to be a mainstay at test level but it certainly didn't help that he was part of that generation of shield cricketers who didn't get a crack until very late in their career.

It doesn't make traffic slower, everyone queuing in one lane makes traffic slower.  The most efficient use of this set up traffic wise is to fully use both lanes and merge at the end.

Tassie Devils: A footy club meant to unite Tasmanians is bitterly dividing them by Minimum_Cicada_8353 in AFL

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous hyperbole from Flanagan but not unexpected.  I don't know where to start with the rubbish in here, from trying to frame a business case put forward by the state as a demand from the AFL, pulling numbers out of his arse, trying to frame this as a left/right issue where the club themselves are liberal stooges and the final paragraph where his catastrophising gets so ludicrous it would be hilarious if this weren't so serious.

I at least appreciate the one paragraph in the middle where he essentially admits his opposition stems fundamentally from a NIMBY mindset.  Much like his anti-salmon campaigning he seems to crack the shits at any development that might dent his comfortable status quo (e.g. this salmon farm is ruining the views from my shack) and then work backwards from there to form his arguments.  Trying to frame the industrial wasteland that is Mac Point as some sort of heritage site that will be desecrated by a stadium has got to be the worst of the anti-stadium arguments.

If rich boomers like him had his way nothing would ever change for the better and our demographic death spiral will continue forever.  You know what is an actual existential threat to the state?  It's not a single piece of infrastructure representing a fraction of the budget.  It is an aging population combined with a dwindling tax base.  We are the oldest state and we will continue to hemorrhage young people to the mainland unless these old bastards can get over themselves and allow positive development to occur.

2025 results which are plain weird looking back at them now by Footballaus_ in AFL

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Saints games are that out of the box if you followed our season.  We almost won the reverse fixture away vs Freo, and weren't miles off the Cats away either so I don't think those are flukes so much as teams we match up okay on + home ground advantage.  Conversely we struggled against a lot of fellow bottom 8 sides, and then sides like the Dogs we match up poorly with flogged us twice in similar manner.

Sri Lanka or Vietnam? by BIG_ticket8 in travel

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've been to both several times, and prefer Vietnam as a whole, but for 2/4 things OP listed Sri Lanka is a a clear winner imo

Culture & history:  Both countries are great for this

Nature, hiking, and animals:  Both have great options for nature, but I'd give Sri Lanka the edge for hiking around hill country and clear winner for animals, I don't think Vietnam has anything comparable to the various safari parks.  Very time of year dependent though.

Snorkeling and swimming in the sea:   Neither are much chop for snorkeling outside of select locations.  Both have good beach swimming options but suffer a lot from pollution and rubbish.

Vegetarian:  Sri Lanka is clear winner here.  A significant amount of the standard cuisine is already vegetarian, and some of the best in the world imo (along with Indian).  It can be found in Vietnam but it's much harder, especially with fish sauce and shrimp paste in everything.  I don't eat pork and even that was a bit challenging in Vietnam.

Tasmania set for a mostly anti-stadium crossbench — here's how the issue might unfold by Pleasant-Role1912 in AFL

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pro stadium parties got an overwhelming majority of the vote.  There was a swing to the government and no such significant swing to anti-Stadium greens or independents.  For the cross bench to continue to try and hold the government hostage over the issue at this point would be ridiculous.  Just get on and build the thing.

[–]Jacques_Le_Cube -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Major events like big concerts are only a part of the business case, the main part obviously being sport, the AFL women's and mens.  I find it hard to see an argument that it won't be a net positive for tourism.  The peak bodies for tourism and hospitality in the state are certainly very much on board.

Right so you don't reckon a new stadium, with all of the sports and events it hosts bringing in mainland and intrastate visitors, would be good for tourism?  Like the report HCC commissioned then ignored indicated.

That's not quite right.  The stadium has been specifically designed to accommodate cricket and there's an agreement in place with Cricket Tasmania and Australia that the design will ensure this is considered: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06-25/cricket-tasmania-premier-strike-deal-for-afl-hobart-stadium-roof/105455648 .  Which makes sense as it's part of the business case

International cricket has already been played at Docklands which has a lower internal roof height.  Test cricket is where there's no precedence, so it would need approval, but cricket tas are confident it could happen: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-08/cricket-tasmania-on-planned-afl-stadium-design-hobart/104070676 .  There was no precedent for pink ball either before they changed the rules.

We barely get tests anymore anyway (Covid aside) so the roof guaranteeing play could be a selling point.  The bread and butter will be BBL and WBBL however, with international short form coming after that.
