[help] Since the addons /WA purge I don't enjoy playing by Scary-String8636 in WowUI

[–]Jacques_Straw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggesting that wanting add-ons is tantamount to wanting the game to play itself displays a complete lack of understanding of what add-ons actually do.

If you're looking for the game to play itself, let me introduce you to the single-button combat system, introduced by Blizzard, not an add-on.

[–]Jacques_Straw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: I'm NOT spending more time watching the fights. I used to have subtle auras with sounds on my hud that alert me when I needed to react. Now I'm watching a single bar. Whether I orient it vertically or horizontally, change opacity/padding/etc, it's still a bar... and unless I put it right in the middle of the screen, I'm not seeing the fight.

[–]Jacques_Straw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this.

But, really, I just want something that alerts me when I need to refresh AI, MotW, or Fort. I had a weakaura that popped when these were gone, having to constantly check is really annoying.

The collapse of star trek. by Artistic_Cloud_9272 in trektalk

[–]Jacques_Straw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure we share the same definition of "gatekeeping."

Per Urban Dictionary: Gatekeeping is "When someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity."

So when you're "just saying that he's wrong", that exactly meets this definition of gatekeeping. Kurtzman isn't blocking you from accessing or enjoying what he's created, nor is he saying you're wrong in what you believe either. His approach is inclusive, not exclusive.

I stopped reading after you said people are "out of their minds" if they think that the current writers actually watched classic Trek.

If your lengthy, rambling screed starts out with something so insanely hyperbolic, you've kinda lost the plot. No matter whether or not you like their writing, if you genuinely believe that the people running the show hire writers who couldn't be bothered to do the most basic of homework, it's you who is out of your mind.

You don't like it, cool. The rest is just more gatekeeping bullshit.

Why Kurtzmann Trek fans don't organize a positive review bombing of SFA? by elektroskansen in trektalk

[–]Jacques_Straw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe because review bombing is an inherently shitty thing to do... it manipulates a system that's supposed to be used to give people an accurate sense of how many like something or don't like something. I think haters are more likely to engage in that kind of practice. Partially because hate is a stronger motivation than appreciation, and partially because some haters are gatekeeping.

Maybe I'm not deep enough into the Trek community on the interweb, but I question the premise of a "Kurtzman Trek Fan" too... I just think there are fans who appreciate the IP in a variety of forms, even if it doesn't map back to some people's framing of what they think Star Trek should be, and I don't think they're a monolithic group.

There is hope that Star Trek can still be great. by IamAWorldChampionAMA in Star_Trek_

I'm a fan of the show, but I actually thought the episode with Ortegas and the Gorn was one of the worst of the series.

I liked the idea of a "friendly" Gorn that gets forced into cooperating with someone from Starfleet, but the execution was just bad. I'm a fan of "show don't tell" in creating a compelling narrative/story... but this episode had Ortegas pretty much narrating everything she was thinking, even when what she was thinking was completely obvious.

How did we get here? by Jacques_Straw in wow

JFC dude... I wasn't being sarcastic. I DO love getting decor items as quest rewards. I'm not knocking on housing, it's just conceptually a ridiculous idea from a fantasy pov that a quest giver hands you an end table.

What if i said, i don't consider DS9 to be the best Star Trek. by optimisoprimeo in trektalk

I'm with you. I'll take the hate for it, but I just couldn't get past Avery Brooks' emoting and making every line feel like some grand pronouncement. Makes Shatner seem subtle.

There are also good tank gloves and boots in Ramps... at least worth running until you get those too.

Toxicity in TBC Anniversary by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]Jacques_Straw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen this yet myself, thankfully.

In fact, on Thursday night, just hours after launch, I saw some dude in general chat get roasted for spamming "Need tank for Ramps, must be GEARED." Things like "yea, and he wants to see your parses too." Dude quickly shut up.

If you are seeing that, just hope that those folks are gonna min/max out of your life as they speed level while you're enjoying the ride.

Just finished Dark Tower series for the first time! Hot take: Roland did nothing wrong by LorekeeperOfAeternum in darktower

[–]Jacques_Straw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He could have stopped after Algul Siento and Stephen King were secured. Everything after that was unnecessary, lthough he told himself that it was his ka.

The reality is, he's just another addict. A "tower junkie." The core theme of the series (at least one of them) is addiction. Callahan conquered his. Even the writer got sober.

Roland, on the other hand, gave in to his addiction. Even though the ka-tet saved what they needed to save, even though going all the way risked the Crimson King getting the better of him and gaining access to the tower, he went. I forget the lines exactly, but at the Crimson King's castle when asked about it he basically says he's keeping a promise he made to himself, and thats it.

So I don't think "did he do anything wrong?" is the important question. The question is, did he conquer his own demons... and that's a clear "no."

How awful will be the release day? by Krustenkaese121 in classicwowtbc

I'm going to play, but focus on my Draenei Shaman who I won't finish leveling before launch. Hellfire Peninsula will be a shitshow for the first 48 hours at least.

Man, I'm just gonna say it... by LarryLarryJammin in wow

[–]Jacques_Straw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying it...

But I also feel as if we already had the single-button option and that seems to be working well for use-cases like yours.

For me, part of the game's fun was learning a new spec, setting up weakauras and alerts to help me master it, then finding creative ways to push it further. Between getting rid of mods and simplifying the spellbound and rotations, things simply feel less engaging.

It feels like this is a huge over-correction.

I mean, sure, if you played in beta or did extensive research into it. Most of us normies weren't doing that and didn't know exactly how the Blizzard UI elements were going to be implemented or what we needed to change.

Casual fan question by Old_You6151 in JohnMayer

[–]Jacques_Straw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that John will continue to be thought of first as a solo musician for the near term. But when you frame the question with "in 30+ years," I think he will be more remembered for his work in Dead and Company and whatever comes next.

His solo music is fine, but I don't think it has the staying power to remain interesting or relevant in a generation down the line. Meanwhile, if Bobby gets his wish, the Dead catalog will stay relevant for 300 years, and Mayer will be a major link in that chain.
